VRS DRL options

Featured Replies

So I've been playing with my lights with Carista.

I managed to nearly get what I wanted which is fog light DRLS but they only come on with the handbrake off.

I've played around with different regions but have set back to GB as it seems to make no difference (apart from US switched my dash to Fahrenheit :o).

Can they be set to always on with ignition/engine running using VCDS or is it not possible?

I know that they should be turned down a bit which I don't think Carista can do.

I would also like coming/leaving to work using fogs but have failed with that too.

Cheers for any help.

It's 2008 preFL

Thanks Mike. I'm glad what I want is possible, I'll try and track down a local VCDSer :)

I do have VCDS Lite, do you happen to know if the registered/activated version of Lite has the capability to change these options?

I do have Xenons so that's good news.

I've been tempted a few times to get full VCDS but never quite managed to justify. The £20 Carista cost me is worth it just to have been able to change the locking to how I wanted it :)

I would change "...consider dropping the intensity to around 60%" to "...make sure you DO drop the intensity" if you're going to have fog-lights on all the time.

Not only from a legal point of view but from a general respect of all other road users.

Wilco :)

Have I read this right?

You did manage to set your front fog lights to work as DRL's using Carista?

The reason I ask is this is the exact reason I bought the adaptor and used Carista on my 2008 Octavia.

I could set the front fogs as DRL's but only with front and rear side lights illuminated too. This was no good as people would think I was deliberately turning on my sidelights and front fog lights to look 'cool'.

The only other option for me in Carista was front dipped headlights as DRL's (no other lights on) which again was not for me.

See here...

In the end I got it done using VCDS so I just have my front fogs as DRL's, no other lights on. The only issue is that they turn on and off with the handbrake. I didn't think I'd like this but love it now, it means when starting the engine and loading the battery the DRL's are off. Sat with the ignition on but the engine off means you aren't sat around with the DRL's draining the battery.

I reduced the brightness down from 92 to 60 (again not possible with Carista) but the front fogs on the Scout and vRS aren't very bright, especially compared to the much bigger standard Octavia foglights so you won't be dazzling anyone at full brightness.

Yes I did manage to get just fogs - no tail lights or sidelights.

Same as you, only with handbrake off and get dipped headlight symbol on dash.

The other option I think I managed to get was dipped headlights, again with handbrake or sidelights including tail on the whole time. I think.

i'd like to be able to have the rear lights turn on along with the DRLs.

i.e. on ignition like the DRL.

that way i have lights on up front and back.

i'm yet to hear it is possible with the LED DRLs on the vRS.

Have you tried experimenting with the setting for other countries?

It's possible but only with the dealer tool - not VCDS (don't know about VCP)

I had it on mine and loved it. Only thing is I like the instrument cluster lit all the time also, which can't be done on the mk2 (needles only)

That's where the mk3 MQB is great, clocks lit all the time, rear tails with DRL'S with VCDS.

ah, so it is possible, but i need to find a friendly dealer who knows what they're doing, or someone with VCP..........

thanks :)

If I find someone with VCDS can the fogs be used without the Dipped headlight symbol on the dash?

Irish spec cars come with rear drls active (or at least they used to.)

Legal requirement in Ireland, so i'm told

Yes, if the fogs are used, the dipped heads are not on, so the dipped head warning light won't be lit.

Mike

It is on mine when I activate them.

Just had a play on my estate -- when fogs are used instead of headlights on Scandinavian mode, the headlight warning light is definately not on. (It is when heads are being used)

Mike

Cool. This, I think, is what I want to end up with.

Fogs and tail on all the time, ignoring handbrake :) without sidelights.

You're not in Scotland are you?! :D

I use Scandinavian mode on my 08 scout with fogs instead of heads and I get the dash symbol on permanently.

I use North American mode and also get the dipped headlight symbol - on with the handbrake off, it goes out (with the DRL's) with the handbrake on.

Now, interestingly, I have selected my front fogs as DRL's so I have no dipped headlights on - but I still get the dipped headlight symbol on the dash as described above.

I can confirm that it is therefore possible to have the dipped headlight symbol on without the dipped headlights actually being on.

My only issue with this is that from the front you have side lights on and front fogs?

I'd be worried that everyone approaching me would think I'd turned on my sidelights just to be able to turn my front fogs on, as a lot of the boy racers do around near me  :D

That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid too.

And I know that there are lots of DRL haters but I actually think they're a good thing, definitely make you more visible on my daily A road commute.

Mikeholroyd, I have a feeling that you might be able to get front fogs on as DRL's without the sidelights and regardless of handbrake using VCP by editing the BCM config directly.

It might already have the abilty to do this but if not some bcm1 files might hold the key. There is a guided function that will let you create a .bcm1 file, steps are something like this iirc:

VCP > Guided Function > Other module > BCM PQ35 > save to file

If you can grab some bcm1 files, we might be able to figure out what bits do what, a good set might be:

- standard config (no DRL's)

- North American mode

- Scandinavian mode

- North American mode with fogs as DRL

- Scandinavian mode with fogs as DRL

If I get time over the weekend I'll have a look at the config on mine but as it's a FL with DRL it might confuse matters, I will also need to make a macros as VAS/ODIS don't have the same helper functions as VCP.

Like you I would prefer the front sidelights to be off, however with 24V bulbs and running at 50% brightness the sidelight bulbs are almost to dim to notice they are on, so you don't notice at a glance, you have to really look to see them.

The main thing for me is I want the rear lit up so no excuses for running into the back of a grey car that blends well with the road.
