Dpf?!? Juddering, lacking power and less than desirable mpg

Featured Replies

Hi all,

As quoted by the topic I'm experiencing a intermittent issue with juddering, lacking power, and a poor mpg return. The car is a 2010 1.6tdi octavia, it's done 51000 miles and has a full Skoda history, looking at this history there seems to be no clear evidence of a major service, so first question would be would a Skoda major service resolve these problems?

What tends to happen is after maybe 300-350 miles the Car will start to judder and lack power, specifically huge turbo lag, and it seems to be trying to "cough up" the muck collected. It will do this for maybe 100 or so miles and then the dpf light will come on, i will perform the regen procedure and it will be successful in this reasonably quickly. But is it normal for this to happen? If it's not a major service could it be needing a replacement dpf? And if it needs a replacement would a dpf delete still be a option at this point?

What I have tried already is a 30min drive at high revs, a normal drive at average revs for 120 miles (both with minimal stop/start) and I've tried a couple of treatments of redex.

Absolutely love the car but if I can't resolve this issue I may need to trade for a tsi equivalent

Huge thanks in advance

I would poss look to see if the DPF sensor is on the way out, scan it as mentioned and see, these are a common failure on the PD170 (G450) sensor.

I also believe but may not be right that the car has 2 stages of regen, one less invasive and one where it ups the Revs on the car and feels awful whilst driving it... i sometimes notice after spirited drive i get a lumpy idle for w hile and then the exhaust note changes and it sorts itself out and goes quiet again.. always suspected it doing a soft regen but no one has ever confirmed how they work

That's exactly what I thought when it does it, it's a shame there isn't more information on this

The DPF regen is certainly a magical art!

The regen process on the older PD engines (in particular the PD170 in the vRS) could often be very noticeable to the driver. High RPM, juddering, lumpy tickover, reduced MPG etc.

On the later CR engines it is almost impossible to tell aside from the higher RPM (on a quieter engine) and the hot / burning smell on lower mileage cars.

Active regen - the car is helping itself to regen - injects more fuel, higher RPM etc. to force more heat into the DPF to burn off the soot.

Passive regen - the exhaust is able to get up to a suitable temperature without intervention to burn off the soot through normal driving.

The symptoms described in the OP do not sound normal for a CR engine, suggesting something isn't quite as it should be..?

A colleague had exactly the same problems with a brand new Fabia 1.6 Tdi (2011). IIRC There were no fault codes logged,Skoda were useless and couldn't fix it. He ended up trading it for a 1.9 Octavia.

To me it sounds like some problem with the DPF Regeneration. There have been cases where the wrong sensors have been fitter at the factory.

Good luck with getting it sorted, I suggest finding a recommended VAG specialist.

Thanks for all the replies so far been really helpful, I think based on all information I'll take silver1011's advice and search the fault codes, hopefully it will show up something nice and simple and that'll be that. If not :s I think I'll have to go for a tsi engine

Mine regens a lot. At least once a week. I'm still recently new to diesels and it is a bit dissapointing the issue with dpfs these have. It shows the exact same symptoms as the op and last week it regened 1 day after a trip to Lanark for a Shark map!! If it is a faulty sensor is it likely a fault will be logged?

Mine does the regen thing about once a week (2.0 PD). I noticed that the counter goes up quicker when using Tescos fuel than it does on Sainsburys. I have noticed that it will regen whenever it feels like too (even in traffic from cold).

I've only had the light on once though and it did clear very quickly. Still doesn't help fuel economy.
