Well done!

Pretty impressive.

Very impressive! You didn't just make it past 500, you've gone well beyond!!

Did you try anything different on this tankful?

I think there were several factors so I cant pin one down..

the warmer weather seems to suit the car

The daily commute traffic has been very kind to me

but the major changes were a recent service where they put in some fortron (good version of redex apparantly)

This was the 2nd or 3rd tank following that

I also used M&S petrol rather than sainsburys and one tank was M&S unleaded extra.

Right, the lad (aboycalledhorse) has gone off to University, which means he's left his Citigo with me. Yay! I'm not doing many miles at the moment, but I do enjoy it as an cheeky alternative to the Yeti on occasion.

As I seem to be able to average about 70mpg in the car and he averages about 40mpg, there was going to be no way of hitting 500 if we were both sharing the driving, but with just me I stand a chance.

I've brimmed the car today and reset the trip.

Let the economy run commence!

I thought bettering this would be (fairly) easy but it's proving anything but.

I'm still on the tank that I started on the 18th September and I'm pretty certain that I'll break 500, but 548 is looking less and less likely. Based on your 68.9mpg, I've ensured that I'd only take the Citigo on a trip if I reckoned I could better 70mpg. Every trip so far on this tank has returned over 70mpg on the PID (92 miles at 78.8mpg last night being the highlight).

At one point last night the total of odometer miles on the car and miles to go on the PID was 590 so I thought it would be a doddle, perhaps even cracking the 600 mile barrier, however after my drive today (70 miles and 72.6mpg) the total is now 545. It seems like the miles to go drops in the same way the needle on the petrol gauge does :-(

One thing's for sure; it's both hard work and pretty darned tedious to eek the mileage out quite so much. If I'm not successful on this tank I'll not be keen to do it again in a hurry.

Delighted and disappointed at the same time

I tried so hard to eek another 11 and a bit miles out of it but it wasn't to be.

With a bit more care, and not having to negotiate Birdlip hill so many times, I reckon 600+ would be achievable. But not by me. Getting 588.8 was hard work; when I filled the tank (squeezed in almost 38 litres) I then drove it in a somewhat less economical manner.

Time for a new thread.

Is the Air Balloon pub still there?

Is the Air Balloon pub still there?

Yes, still there.

I've realised though that I've probably not been in for about 15 years...

Is the Air Balloon pub still there?

It was definitely there yesterday afternoon when we went up the hill. :)

What a weird coincidence? I see a place I have absolutely no idea about mentioned in the forum and the day after I'm driving past it.

Our first visit to the Cotswolds and I must admit I wasn't looking forward to making the trip in the Citigo but we had no choice as the missus' Leon DSG is parked at the stealers' waiting for SEAT to magic up the new airbag wiring harness it needs to make the airbag warning light go away.

As things turned out the drive down to Cheltenham from Yorkshire and then around Cotswolds was quite pleasant. The relatively quiet and well maintained roads quite suited the Citigo. 7 1/2 hours in the driving seat today with almost 4 hours of that in a ridiculous stop start crawl on the M6 and M60 around Manchester. After that ordeal I was yearning for the DSG.

Still, the entire journey was done on one tank of fuel with the PID reporting a range of 35 miles left and over 60 MPG average. Would have been a better average were it not for the chaos on the M6/M60.

I'm back on the 500 mile per tank trail again! I did get a little grumpy today when I pulled out of a junction and the range dropped 30 miles - I didn't even accelerate hard!

Things are looking bright for my first 500 mile tankful. I've covered 128 miles so far on this tank, the PID is showing a range of 455 miles and the needle hasn't moved off full yet.

Surely this time?

I'm of the opinion that the PID is a tad optimistic after our frugal Cotswolds jaunt. The PID reckoned over 60mpg but my own calculation based on brim to brim mileage worked out at 55mpg.

It's well known that the PID is only a guide. Can't argue with the miles covered though.

My only other experience of trip computers has been on a Golf Mk5 and a Leon Mk3 which have always been within a couple of mpg of the brim to brim calculation. I guess with the Citigo tank capacity reportedly being anywhere from 35 to 38 litres then there is quite a margin for error. :)

Mine doesn't seem too far off, but I can only get 35 litres in!

Hint - do lots of miles after the PID says zero to go. Then you'll squeeze more than 35 litres in ;-)

Hint 2 - carry a fuel can in the boot. With fuel in it.

Range down to 395 but have covered 175 so still on target.

Seriously - I got over 50 miles after PID zero, so you're on target for 620...

Not sure I'm brave enough to drive that far with the PID on zero; I did do 11 miles once and was bricking it the whole time. The range drops like a stone in last half of the tank so I reckon I need a minimum 320 miles covered by halfway to make 500 miles. I have a trip to Leeds tomorrow on the motorway that might scupper the plan unless I exercise restraint (that I am not well known for!).

As I suspected, today's return journey to Leeds, predominantly on motorways, has significantly affected consumption and range. At one point it was as low as 483 but the last 25 miles on minor roads has brought it back up to 508. Based on my commuting journey I will probably need to refuel on Wednesday - fingers still crossed!

Today's episode. Started with 115 miles range and 393 miles covered. After the 23 mile commute to work range had dropped to 80 despite the PID showing 61mpg. During the return journey the range dropped to 55 with PID showing 72mpg for the journey. So range + miles covered currently equals 494 miles but the needle has yet to hit the red, so I reckon there is easily 61 miles left in the tank. There is something about this 500 mil challenge that is doing my head in.

Thank goodness for that, I have done it at last!

I refuelled with 500.5 miles on the trip computer having driven for some 14 miles with the range showing '000'. I managed to get 37 litres in which equates to 61.49mpg for the tank. I can now relax having joined the club.

So who is up for the 'No more than 350 miles from a tank' challenge?

Oh yeah!

Excellent thread, and what a challenge to get 500+ on a tankfull!

on a recent trip to London, I took up the challenge. I wanted to make a big impact with the photo from the in car PID (but simply cant work out how to upload the picture)

Anyway, I drove 601 miles before stopping for fuel (0 miles came up at 597), and I refilled to full again with 35.0 litres. PID photo shows average speed 39 mph and average consumption 78.9 mpg. My "road trip" app calculated 78.1 mpg which is remarkably similar.

help required to upload photo please!

I think come the warm weather in 2017 and 601+ will be possible, looking forward to another go......
