:finger: :P i was meaning that was the first "super" saloon

I always loved cars as a kid - but i first got really excited about cars when i saw this one at the Motorshow in the late 80s:

Alfa Romeo SZ

You would have to include the Renault espace in this category. The first popular people mover, spawned a glut of copy cat vehicles, then the MPV's then Mini MPV's, then normal hatchbacks that want to look like MPV's (Peugeot 307, Golf, Focus) The Espace changed low slung 3 box saloons into high sided tall hatches.

I was always going to say it,

The Mk I Golf :D

Dont give me any of that 205 nonsense

The original Audi Quattro, IIRC the first car with a permanent 4 x 4 system which revolutionised rallying in the 80's.

Alfa Romeo SZ

I loved that the instant I saw it, all those years ago. oh and the Nazi mobile i.e. The Beetle

what about the ac cobra, isnt it the reason we have speed limits on the motorway today?

Any links for that? I always assumed it was to do with petrol rationing in the early 70's, but I'm not old enough to remember and Google didn't turn up anything conclusive

I thought that was just rumours?

Nope, AC (or their customers) used to use the then unlimited M1 as their test track and got to silly speeds with the cobra. after complaints of cars going at over 160mph by people in Morris Minors and tory types, the government decides to inpose a blanket top speed of 70mph on all new fangled motoray type things.

Yea it was a Le Mans cobra that apparently clocked 183 on the M1 in 1964. UK speedlimit was introduced in 1965.

Whether one has anything to do with the other I dont know. Truth or urban legend - you decide! :D

nah that was the jensen inter

Jensen FF, I think you mean.

Jag also used the M1 for testing the E-Type, with similar stories arising about the subsequent introduction of speed limits.

pretty sure I'd read the speed limit was introduced at the time of the fuel shortages... and then never lifted...

the stories of the Cobra and E-type are just urban myth....

a couple of my choices for cars that changed motoring have already been listed though...

Mk1 Golf GTI

Audi Ur-quattro

No the fuel shortage was in the seventies and a temporary 50mph speed limit was imposed during this time (according to DTI website I just found!)

Still reckon the Alfasud was pretty groundbreaking. Was one of the first (if not the first) attempt at a mass production hatchback. The first Sud Ti was in about 1972 which was a couple of years before the Golf GTi. Was very unusual for Alfa as it was their first front wheel drive car but it had great handling, decent performance for the time and great sound from the boxer engine. Should really be remembered more ..... but unfortunately a lot of them rusted very quickly which has tended to cloud people's view of them  I loved them

No proof to offer, but the cobra story re speed limits is a fact, not fiction.

Cars that changed motoring, well:

Model T for obvious reasons

Citroen DS - first plastic dash, headlights that shine round corners, and a multitude of other firsts.

Audi Quattro - as stated above, changed the face of rallying forever.

Mini - obviously

VW Golf GTi

More later.........

:finger: :P i was meaning that was the first "super" saloon

Lotus Carlton fits that bill better IMHO.

how could i forget the triumph dolomite sprint
