Morning all

Took delivery of my Octavia 2.0 TDI 150 the other week. Today had a cheque for 100 thru the post saying that due to a "technical production issue" the mpg figure quoted on purchse was not correct (I'm still happy with mine compared to the 1.6 bora!).

My tax band hasn't changed as far as I can tell as co2 has only gone up from 106 to 107.

All down the the wheel increasing co2 emmisions apparently! Anyone else got this?

Not sure it's an MPG thing. Think someone else has had a cheque through but it was I. Respect of wrong emission and road tax banding in the brochure. Wasn't relevant to the VRS which is what I'm getting, so not sure on the exact detail, but def wasn't mpg related.

Skoda emailed me saying "Also, I have been informed by Skoda UK that you new car will have a CO2 emissions rating of 106 g/km.

This is instead of the 105 g/km that was initially stated in the brochures. In real world terms this will have no effect on the car, the efficiency or the tax band." Which doesn't bother me, they also said I would receive a cheque for £100 to apologise for the incorrect information, mines also a 2.0 TDI Octavia.

This tax band thing is green gone crazy. I was certain mine was £110 after the free first year.

 

When I got the DVLC blurb it turns out to be only £30 p.a.,  That is because the CO2 is one or two units lower.

CO2 numbers are inversely proportional to mpg numbers. So an approx 1% worse CO2 number means an approx 1% bigger fuel bill over the lifetime of the car. That's going to come to a hell of a lot more than £100, but hey, it's better than a kick in the goolies.

CO2 and mpg are effectively measuring the same thing in different ways.

I should think the main reason for the refund is to pre-empt legal issues if they've published new figures worse than previous ones for the same car.

As to the Co2 & MPG that is not exactly correct.

 

eg 

4 Sister cars and an estate.

1.4 TSI / TFSI (1390cc Euro5) Twinchargers. 132-136kw Minimum.

 

Seat Ibiza Cupra 2009-2012 / Skoda Fabia vRS hatch & estate 2010 - 2012 *Co2 g/km 148*

VW Polo GTI 2010-2014, Audi A1 185 ps 2011-2014  *Co2 g/km 139*

 

Revised Engine Fitted to Skoda Fabia vRS 2012/13-2014 *Co2 g/km 148* NO CHANGE.

Same Engine & Engine Management fitted to 

Seat Ibiza Cupra 2013,  Emissions changed to  *Co2 g/km 139*

 

Now the Skoda was always on 205/40 R 17 tyres and the others on 215/40 R 17 tyres,

The Skoda Hatch was lighter than the 3 Sister Cars even though it had 25kg Ballast bolted on & a Spare Wheel in as Standard.

All do the same MPG, if not the actual fact that the Skoda does better MPG due to the tyres and less weight.

 

MPG & Emission Figures are from the EU Testing as the Manufacturer does in most cases,.

& with the Volkswagen Group they are well known to use Figures, MPG, Emissions and Performance that suits 

the Brand,  there are inconsistencies regularly from model to model as the VWG have Customers getting the VED Class and what customers end up paying yearly.

 

The Emission Figures that have been given in the past have often been on the strength of a vehicles Stop/Start,

then when a vehicle reached the dealer, there was no Stop /Start.

On the basis that petrol (or diesel) gets burnt with oxygen into (mostly) CO2 and H2O, I maintain that a car that is actually producing more CO2/km is actually doing fewer miles per gallon.

What is claimed/disputed/revised/based-on-dodgy-tests/over-ruled-by-marketing-types-who-dislike-science, is another matter entirely.

 

As a matter of interest, is there a letter with this cheque that has a small-print section containing something to the effect that if you cash the cheque, you agree to not join any class-action lawsuits, or words to that effect?  Or am I being a tad too cynical? 

It really does not matter what you maintain you must know where a VED class from the Co2/ km can have one car with £145 & and older one that has a class that is £290 and they both do the same MPG on the same journeys.

One might be Euro 3 Emissions & another Euro 5, and the older car is bigger and more powerful.

(the same car and Engine size 6 months newer (even 1 month newer) might fall into Euro 4, and the VED will be £485 a year.)

 

So the Emissions given on a V5 & Official Test Figures do not equate to the MPG a vehicle does.

Now cars are using fuel just to be less polluting,

ie Diesels with DPFs doing regens,  & a car that is capable of a nice 50 MPG plus is then use extra fuel to be cleaner.

You're 'maintaining' with no evidence I can see (?) that those cars 'both do the same mpg on the same journeys'. Personal observation? Anecdotal evidence? Older cars weren't VED rated on CO2, were they? Engine size bands only, was it not?

The evidence most of us have in our driving careers are driving vehicles, buying the fuel, buying the VED, and 

haven been driving for a fair time now.

 

If you experiences do not show that the Emission Figures do not always equate to the economy and miles per gallon a vehicle can do then thats fair enough.

I know of Euro 6 Engines now that have lower Co/2 figures, & lower VED than a Euro 5 engine and use more fuel, 

same cars, newer models.

 

Actually Skoda know of them as well.

& they sometimes increase the PS of the Engine using mapping to actually achieve lower Emission Figures as cars are tested & get the VED Class, while the vehicles have no improved fuel consumption.

Only the 'Comparison Figures' from the EU Test, on a rolling road from a car inside, taken from Temperature Controlled Storage.

 

Showing Combined Fuel Figures and lower Emission Figures based on a car having Stop / Start will not be what you get if your journey has no Stop Start other than setting off and getting where you are going, Engine Started, engine up to temperature, 

journey done, stop, switch off engine.

Cars stopped and not moving do not do high MPG's. they do 'Zero Miles per gallon', they are stopped & not moving.

I was so confused that I emailed DVLC my car reg. and document details to clarify and they confirmed £30. Possibly different for estate with same engine, different for DSG vs. manual, and so on and so on.

 

Personally I rate it all as politically correct rubbish (like wind turbines). Why not tax a car (partly at least) on its annual mileages? More miles, more emissions? Or its weight (more wear and tear on the roads?) Or tax it lower if you belong to the Greens, and higher if you belong to UKIP. Makes about as much sense.

Estate is 1 g higher if it has 17 inch wheels. The brochure claimed otherwise. Skoda got it wrong

Look down the V5C  (Item V.7)

 

If CO2 is below 120 (mine says 119) it is £30
