  • I'm biased, but I'd go for the 2.0 TSi L & K, lots of nice toys, + good performance.   If you need to go faster, then I'd suggest a remap...   DC

  • If it was me. I would go for the petrol. It's a lot of car for the money. Then spend a grand on an old Suzuki Jimny for the winter. They will go anywhere. I know, I bought one and am amazed that it ou

Yes, oddly the TSI badge was indeed the giveaway when I saw that, but thanks for pointing that out...

OK  already............, the colors of the tsi badge also can indicate what's under the hood!

Have a good one, DC.

Just a quick question. Are 140's 8v & 170's 16v???

Really? Thanks for pointing that out too....

My pleasure, always glad to help.

Just a quick question. Are 140's 8v & 170's 16v???

I thought they were all 16 valve..

I thought they were all 16 valve..

Correct they are both 16v (the 1.9PD Greenline is 8v)

Correct they are both 16v (the 1.9PD Greenline is 8v)

It was the 2.0 PD 140 on the MKI Superb that was 8v - complete with self destructiong oil pump drive

All MK II 2.0  diesels are 16V

Ok thanks for clearing that up! Autotrader says 2.0 cr140 is an 8v & 2.0 cr170 is a 16v - they are wrong!!

Hi good luck with the purchase. I have a 170 cr 4x4 and love it. I would advise caution if you're considering buying in Banchory, I had a bad experience there with a golf a couple of years back.

Funny thing is I only put my Jetta up for sale last week and I've already turned down one swop (mk2 Octavia Vrs 2.0t with 270bhp) and someone else coming to look on Sunday - they already made an offer of £3900 without even seeing it yet!

I budgeted on only getting £2400 for the Jetta as a trade in - more money to spend on a newer car!!

Just out of curiosity, what's the spec and age etc. of the Jetta?

57 plate - Sport tdi. PD140 (mapped to approx 180bhp) manual, coil overs, 312mm discs, stainless exhaust, 93k on the clock, cruise, centre armrest, rear sun blind, wind deflectors, R32 style headlights, red tinted tail lights & jap spec plates.

Thanks for the heads up....

Hmm, makes mine look goodish then. Well, better than I expected.

Ok so back to the 2 superb's at Banchory (160 mile round trip with 3 kids!)

IMAG0403_zpsofgkh7zu.jpg

I'll start with the gold/beige Elegance.

71k on the clock - could have been 171k. The rear bench had a bad tear in the middle of the leather, the steering wheel is rubbed bare on the leather & the driver seat was badly scuffed to bare leather & some frayed stitches. The body work looked fine, a few small marks on the bumpers, had mud guards & over carpets. It was a base spec Elegance CR170 4x4 manual. No options on it. But it did have a tow bar. I took the cover of it off & saw number out scratches and quite a bit of wear on the towball itself. The 18" wheels are shot, all will need at least a refurb & eventhough the tyres all had good tread - they were by a company called "Lanvigator" - think they are a budget budget tyre!! So on first walk round I dismissed it!! It did look like it had maybe had a hard life towing things!!

Now the Green SE

97k on the clock. The condition is fair. Everything was just a little dirty/ dusty. No interior damage I could see/find, rubber over mats inc in the boot. Exterior window seals looked dirty & some moss growing in the quarter windows on the drivers side rear door. There was a nasty birdmuck type scratch on the d/s quarter panel near the fuel filler flap, a nasty scratch on the passengers side rear door what has been touched in previously, along with some minor sill damage just in front of the rear wheel. It ran sweeter than the Elegance too. The Panormaic sunroof and shade worked well on all settings. Decided to take it for a drive, strapped in the kids & just took it for a 30 mile run. Ran smooth and sweet, but couldn't get my phone to pair with the Bluetooth! 17" rims are spotless and it wore 4 matched Goodyear tyres.

Now here's the thing - I really want an Elegance for all the toys that come as std, heated seats would be nice on a frosty winters morning, xenon headlights, 18" wheels, Columbus - but this SE has made me re-evaluate that a little. They have the same running gear, the green is quite unusual, the Panormaic sunroof makes the interior seem slightly larger, it was a big plus for the kids too.

But - it kind of felt a little soul less!!?? My mk2 Golf GTi is great fun to drive & I always have a huge grin on my face when I drive it. Even my Jetta has a bit of a character to it. The SE just didn't do anything for me deep down - it did its job well, don't get me wrong - it just wasn't inspiring!!

Was it just that car?? Or am I going to feel this way about them all?? My dad thought an Octavia VRS 2.0tsi would be more my thing. But then there is the V6 Superb to consider too!!

They do not do any single thing exceptionally well (rear legroom aside), but they do everything very well, the 170 does not feel quick... but glance down at the speedo and it confirms it is not slow, remap it and it is sooo much nicer to drive.

Elegance models seem to be not much dearer than the SE, but there is so much more spec on them personally I think you would be mad to buy anything under an Elegance.

I think the main problem is I feel its size/length (steady now!) I tried putting my sons buggy in the boot of the green one. It wouldn't fit across the boot (without removing them 2 cubby hole panels) and it wouldn't fit longitude either!! A little disappointing as my Jetta swallows it

I think I'm going to stick to the twinhatch....

When's the quad-piped L&K visit taking place?!?

Surely the buggy will fit diagonally? If you're keeping the car for a while then it won't be long until your youngest is in one of those much smaller light-weight pushchairs, and then in nothing?

If you only do 7800k miles a year then have you considered a V6? Petrol consumption is not a lot worse than a 2.0l petrol in the real world and it has 4x4, DSG and elegance spec, plus the nice V6 grumble. I've got one and love it. Definitely worth looking out for if you can find one.

Couldn't Edit my post above sorry so I'll put my edit here.

There's a lovely blue v6 on auto trader at the minute up at £13995, only has 26K on it. It even has a tow at on the back
