Your Old Cars

Featured Replies

On my introduction post this was brought up by me, cars that we have owned in the past. Some of us have owned cars that would be worth thousands now, might be good to name a few. Mine....Cortina MK2 with column change auto and bench seat, Capri 2.0 s, VW Beetle 1300,VW Camper. Also had a couple of VW gti's but were they as good at the time as I thought they were, I don't think so. About 2 years ago we had a Vauxhall Corsa with a 1.2 twinport engine, this thing had a couple of mild mods done to it and I reckon that this was as quick as those gti's of the late 80's, flat out speed according to sat nav 110mph (on private land of course). Maybe its all down to technology changing or memory loss on my part :D ......Opinions ?

I had one of the first 400 Impreza Turbos in the country :) they had an aluminium bonnet (and all around ventilated discs iirc) unlike the ones that came in 95 and on. It was quick, but understeered horribly if you were going nuts, or it was a little damp. The next one I bought was 100% better in almost every way :) Might have been worth a few bob if I'd kept it. They were only about £17.5K new and I got nearly £5K off!!!!

I have owned as following

1989 nova 1.3sr on twin 40s

1991 fiesta rs turbo stage 1 175bhp

2003 mg zr 160 throttle bodies cams etc 192bhp

1991 r5 gt turbo 236bhp still 1.4 8v 12.1 1/4 mile

2001 peugeot 206 gti

And had a 1997 escort van for 4 years.

Crappy little Peugeot 206 1.4 automatic. Glad I got rid of that.

Isn't that a Vauxhall/Opel Firenza ?

My second car - bought in 1962 and owned for just 6 months - was a rare 1953 RHD Mercedes 220 saloon. I was told at the time that the car had first been registered to Jack Barclay and that there were only 6 examples made. The car is still registered.

No its an Opel Manta B Berlinetta , used to be a rare site on uk roads in the 70s then they brought out the Manta C which is the one used in rallying and the one most people associate with the Manta name .

Yes it does , but the Manta didnt share any parts with Vauxhall at that time to my knowledge , it  had a totally different suspension setup  and a hugely heavy  but torquey  1.9 cam in head engine    , the Firenzas were either 1256 , 1800 or 2.3 ltr

Yes and quite a nice looking car it was

1989 Vauxhall Astra 1.3 3dr Merit

1995 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16v Arctic (with AC :sun: )

2001 Ford Focus 1.9TD Zetec

2004 Renault Clio 1.5 dCi (100hp) Dynamique

2007 Skoda Octavia VRS TFSI

2010 Honda Accord Touring 2.2 DTEC ES-GT

1993 Kawasaki ZXR400L

Nothing massively exciting tbh.

I think they're all still on the road except for the Vauxhalls.

IIRC...

1991 Single Carb Mini Cooper, in BRG. Rally spec head, engine upped to 1380cc, full rollcage and bucket seats/harnesses. It was a UK RHD car imported to Italy when it was 2 months old and then imported back here 6 months before I passed my test - it was totally rot free and mint. If I could buy one car back, it would be this one. Bought for £3k, spent loads on it, sold it for £5k. Probably be worth close to 10 now based on current prices...

Then a Pug 205 GTi - got replaced with a 309 Goodwood. I still think the Goody is the better car of the two.

Sold the Goody and got a 1999 Mk1 Hyundai Coupe F1 Evo, which is another stand out car. Loved that thing - hugely underrated. There's only 100 left on the road now but most have the dreaded rust in abundance. Mine was broken on eBay a year or so ago, looked like it had been horribly abused after my ownership. If there was any money in them at all I'd buy one again and do a full resto on it but as it stands it'd just be a money pit.

The Coupe went in favour of an '89 Mk1 MX-5 1.6. Spent a while playing with it - splitter, strut braced, split rims, lowered etc. Loved it, but started doing regular 100 mile + trips and I needed more boot space.

It left in favour of an Alfa 156 2.0, which in turn got swapped for a Ford Puma, which in turn got swapped for an Alfa 156 GTA, and then an Alfa 147. Somewhere in the middle there I had a Punto HGT for a few months as well when the Puma threw it's MOT.

And then the Octy...

Sorry chaps, I thought I'd deleted this - I'm trying to get it in spreadsheet form!

I'll try again tomorrow.

I think the only thing I'v owned that may go up in value was a Fiat Coupe. Like this-

Its amazing how much smaller our old cars were in comparison to newer cars , this was brought home to me just now in a traffic queue , an original Mini was stopped next to a Fiat 500 , the Fiat was roughly a 1/3rd wider again than the Mini yet we consider the Fiat small .

I was compiling this for hopeful inclusion in the £100k dream garage on PH. All were bought used. I love the art of 'Bangernomics'  (I've never purchased a new car, never will). It makes me happy/sad to see some of these now going crazy in the 'classics' market.  Of them all the AVO RS2000 was the one I regret selling most along with the Alpina B11. The Lambo was financial suicide. It was cheap...I quickly found out why  :swear:  :@ Ho hum....
