Want a car that corners like a go-kart... don't look at a Corsa haha haha... though they were on my list, My wife and I have had 10+ corsa fleet cars (BSM). you have to look at Lotus cars for that.

We were living in Weymouth at the time and I have to say it took the winding country roads really well considering what a poor motor it was ( not like a Lotus ). Just after we bought it there was a multitude of owners suffering engine failures which was put down to crankshaft  bolts not torqued up enough, coming loose and wrecking engines. Vauxhall were in denial for ages but had to do a recall and retorque the bolts. :dull:

I once had a Rover Cityrover.

I'll just leave that there for you....

I once had a Rover Cityrover.

Was that the one that came with a rally jacket in white canvas that strapped under your crotch and buckled up your arms behind you?

Made by Tata I seem to recall.

Was made by Tata!

Plastic gear stick, plastic steering wheel, plastic everything. Sony explod stereo as standard (?).

Despite the awful drive, awful looks, crappy interior, purple paint.

Best car I had as it cost me next to nothing and no cares where given!

Haha yeah it was one of the early facelift models. SXI spec too so more or less an SRI just looked a little less sporty and only the smaller engine. V well equipped and thoroughly decent for my age at the time. It was quick for a 1200 too.

Was an excellent car bar its penchant for knackering steering racks...was a weak point on the car...think it may have had a clutch or two under warranty as they had a problem with slipping.

Only went to make way for the Astra lease cars.

Clutches we went through like the were going out of fashion and they constantly needed handbrakes adjusting.

Put me off Vauxhalls, and the hateful electric steering system on the current and previous generation Astra.

My Old Cars are ones i am running now, keepers.

I have just added up the age of my 4 Keepers since they were first registered.

That comes to 49 years old,

& all 4 are pretty much as good now as when they were new, and new ones would be unlikely to be any more enjoyable, comfortable or reliable.

Plus parking up & the carelessness of others is not such a worry as they are easily touched up.

Worked out what they were new.

17 year old was £10,000

13 year old was £12,000 (I bought new, same model exactly as 17 year old)

13 year old was £20,000

6 year old was £15,500

So a total RRP new was £57,500

(Today they could sell easily for a total of £14,000)

So does there not come a time that you call it a day because of some major mechanical failure or a major tin worm infestation ?

In the past yes, i have scrapped many a car over the years, ones that i should never had scrapped.

but not when you have cars without rust / corrosion.

(Helps having been a car sprayer.)

Then engines and gearboxes are replaceable or rebuildable.

Most of my early "old cars" were 50% metal,30% rust and 20% Isopon filler :D

First car was a 1964 Austin A40 Farina. Cost: £15. Insurance: £81 TPO. The front nearside wing was quarter wing, quarter rust and half metal tin Michelin tyre pressure wall chart!  :giggle:

Then (after the floor fell out of the A40) a '65 VW Beetle - free from Dad + £40 for new brake pipes. Great car, went all over the highlands in '75 and down to that London and on to Cornwall in '75.
That was scrapped (AAARGH!) because the back wing was dented by a drunk on the M8 and I had the chance of a 1970 Cortina 1600E.

Then nothing for years as I had a company van and no spare cash.
1978 Fiat 128. Nuff said. Eventually scrapped after engine no.3 threw a con rod. Also, the heater motor went backwards and blew air out the vent in the bonnet instead of into the car! Winter was hellish...

1987 Lada Riva. (Free from Brother-in-Law) Nothing - Nothing could be done to get the emissions below 3 times the MOT limit! Eventually scrapped.

1981 Austin Metro. Terminal rot. Scrapped.

1987 Peugeot 205 1L. Wouldn't pull you out of bed so, eventually traded in for £100)

1997 Daewoo Lanos. (Fitted more rear springs than tyres!)

2005 Fiesta 1.25. Nothing much went wrong with that one at all.

2014 Octavia Elegance 1.6TD

More lemons in there than Mr Lemon's Lemon Warehouse..

From what I remember wasn't the Lada Riva was made of thick guage steel making it rather good in a small shunt ?

How much would a  '65 VW Beetle be worth now ?

Edited by Bazzer1955

Most people so far were driving before i was born so far,

Mines a more recent history as only passed my test in 99,

Had a 50cc scooter for a year before i was old enough to drive,

then

red 1.2 corsa b (smashed to bits in a head on with a transit van)

green 1.2 corsa b (gsi bodykit fitted along with suspension upgrades)

white 1.4 corsa b sport (my god this was a quick car for a 1.4)

purple Volvo s40 2.0T (written off while been towed to bodyshop after a miner bump)

blue Volvo s40 2.0T (loved this car until i blew engine after 136k)

red Peugeot 309GTi (very long term track car project - will get it done someday, longest car ive owned)

silver Peugeot 406Hdi (stop gap after killing volvo - written off outside work while parked up)

grey Volvo s40 1.9 Diesel (never bonded with this and sold it after a couple of years)

red Skoda octavia vrs (spent far to much money on it and carn't bare to part with it even though its been off road for nearly 2 years)

red 1.4 corsa b sport (bought for other half to learn to drive in but was slow compared to my old white one)

blue Volvo xc90 d5 (bought by accident with a dead engine, repaired it and done 20k in it so far)

red Peugeot 306 dturbo (run about after selling corsa as it was to slow for me)

blue Peugeot 306 Hdi estate (current project as miss having 4 doors and loved the hdi engine in my 406)

I've also bought and sold a few and have a couple of other projects aswell but that list is about the gist of it

From what I remember wasn't the Lada Riva was made of thick guage steel making it rather good in a small shunt ?

Yeah. It also had bumpers. I mean solid great chunks of thick metal girder front and back. Put a turret on top and it could have doubled as a tank, it certainly drove like one!

When I see what Beetles are changing hands for these days it makes me want to cry. There was less wrong with it than the one Mike Brewer bought on Wheeler Dealers for £1600. It was still running too - but being young, the 1600E was seen as much cooler.

I've had a few cars over the years now, but always loyal derv fan and never owned a petrol yet.

First car
Pegueot 106 1.5XND
Povery spec with windy windows, no airbags or power steering, full manual locking and even manual immoboliser
Loved it. Cheap & easy to maintain but slow as a week in the jail.
Engine eventually let go at around 175k after years of abuse. It still drove but lots of smoke and no power.

Golf 1.9D (non turbo)
Faster than my 106 but rough as a dog and a total lemon.
Bought it when i had issues with my 106, but eventually sold it and went back to the 106 again

1918134_199559032367_2225391_n.jpg?oh=c3

Corsa CDX 1.5TD
My first turbo diesel. Slow still and rally laggy. Didn't boost until 2800rpm and peak off just over 4000rpm. At 115mph in 5th you'd be doing around 5000rpm so not the best motorway cruiser either.
First car i bothered to modify. Loved it apart from the rust issues. It got wrote off eventually after someone T Boned me. Engine had 185k on it and still ran sweet as a nut

Ibiza FR TDi (Pre facelift)
Had this after the Corsa got wrote off. Got rid of it eventually as DMF was worn, clunks from the front end and was starting to lose coolant with the header tank pressurising. Had some tasteful mods but fond a Fabia VRS with lots of goodies and made more sense to buy that than repair the Ibiza.

You are the first person that I have heard of never owning a petrol car

My last car was a 1.9 150bhp gtdi Golf, loved this car!

And before that was a mk6 Fiesta Zetec S, this was quite fun for a not very fast Ford!

And before these I had a MG ZR, no pics needed haha, and after that was my sexy Alfa GTV

What a number plate..."666" the sign of the devil

Damn right, nice and evil haha

What a number plate..."666" the sign of the devil

Correction,

666 - "Number of the Beast" :)

Roughly translated from Greek in Revelations 18 "Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast, for it is a human number,

Its number is Six hundred and sixty six

Not only a well known heavy metal track but CC666 the the designation of Maiden's new tour bus.

Correction,

It has been argued that 616 is the real number of the beast, but that's taking this thread way off topic haha
