Anyone tried Michelin Cross Climate tyres?

Recommended Posts

Gee DEL80Y, thanks a MILLION - one wakes up, all bright-eyed & bushy-tailed, & then there's always SOMEONE who delights in peeing all over your bowl of breakfast cornflakes.

£72 would actually buy me TWO tanks of go-faster juice - it's only a lousy Citigo that I have: I DON'T NEED another tyre, the spare is unused - & (the only-&-only resolution that I've ever stuck to) is that I don't drink & drive - & if/when I go out, I'm always driving, so no drinky-poos.

I suppose that my FTF has to make a living somehow,& who better from, than me?????????????

Anyway, what's £72 in the greater scheme of things?  SWMBO has booked a meal out for this evening - using our wedding anniversary as a MISERABLE excuse, and THAT'S going to cost me a whole shedload more than £72, but you can't take it with you - and she's going to make certain that I don't!!!!

But I DO wish that you hadn't told me, I was much happier in my ignorance - & when ignorance is bliss, tis folly to be wise .

Forgot to say, DEL80Y,

Got this from the Pneu Online webpage - for whatever it may count:

FO = Ford Approved tyres???

But I STILL stand to be corrected, as I don't personally have a clue, ad there may well be more than one explanation.

And finally (as the alternative to a deep-fried Mars Bar) I say unto you - Isaiah 23.15 (King James' Version).  It just about says it all!

FO is probably 'Ford only'. There are also AO for Audi, MO for Mercedes, N0, N1, N2 for Porsche and I believe BMW is a star.

From my understanding, a tyre manufacturer will create so many brand specific tyres at a car manufacturers request. Most of these are sold on new cars but some will end up in shops, mostly as replacements for the originals. The tyres may have a few slight tweaks when compared to the 'standard' versions but I doubt it'll have much effect on the road, more details here: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/audi-ao-tyres-whats-the-difference.148166/

You shouldn't have any problem running FO tyres on a Skoda but they may feel different to none-FO tyres.

edit:

Some more brand specific codes are listed here: http://www.hometyre.co.uk/tyre-information/tyre-styles/

Thanks for that, langers2K,

I can't actually see that I'll be facing any problems when fitting these "FO" tyres to my Citigo - the 4Seasons are, so I was told by the Tyre Factor, just part of their comprehensive stock, & suitable for my car, & doubtless, in fact I am positive, will be fitted to many other cars where the owners opt for 4Seasons, Gen 2 tyres.

If there were any possible "issues" with tyres marked "FO" being fitted to a non-Ford car, I'm sure that there would be the appropriate warnings out there on the web or better still, SOMEONE on Briskoda would have the definitive answers..

I'm equally sure, & possibly without the owner actually realising it, there's thousands of motorists running around on tyres with similar, albeit differing specialised markings.     FCOL, these are PREMIUM tyres, and I can't really see Msieu Goodyear et al restricting their possible market in this way.

And in any case, they're GOT to be better than the cheap-and-cheerful tyres that were fitted at the factory.

But I may be wrong............................

Well, I now have 4Seasons fitted to the little jam-jar, although I haven't driven on them for long enough to see how they're performing - on the (short) trip back to Chez Nous, they did seem much more quiet though.    Am due for a 100+ mile round trip tomorrow, so that should give me a better idea.

I DID manage to have the "FO" markings on them clarified - it simply means that they are approved by Ford for all of their vehicles, but the tyres are NOT restricted for use solely on Ford cars.    Phew, that's a relief.

What did surprise me, was that I was also told that the FOS tracking was slightly out - a tad surprising on a new car, especially as I haven't clipped any kerbs, but it was explained away on the grounds of  me perhaps me hitting a pothole, of which we have many thousands in my area (these, with very small patches of smooth tarmac linking them together, collectively, & laughingly, make up our local roads) & sic "a slight knock is all it takes to throw the tracking out".

Hmm!

Have now done my 100+ miles (on mainly B roads), and to be fair, the 4Seasons stuck to the road like S H One T to a blanket: also seemed to be extremely quiet & confidence-giving as well - so I'm well pleased.    Was expecting a noticeable increase in consumption, but came back from the trip with exactly 64 mpg.     Yeah, I know - SOMEONE'S gunna tell me that if I'd have stuck to the Continentals, I'd have come back with 64+++ to the gall.   But 64 does me - sufficient unto the day thereof!

Tomorrow, having re-considered (& also carried out a Roll Call of my wallet), I'll go back to my FTF: cross his palm with Silver (more like Gold, in his case) & pay umpteen shekels for having my tracking sorted.

  • 1 year later...
  • 3 weeks later...

I did the same yesterday on the Superb 4x4, had 4 Michelin Crossclimates fitted to replace the Continental SportContact 2's fitted when new... both rears needed to be replaced, just on the wear indicators and the fronts had 3mm left so took the plunge ready for its first MOT next week...

First impressions, love the tread pattern, there did seem to be a little more noise on a rough road surface by the tyre shop, (when I had winter tyres on my Rapid they were the same for the first few miles)... they seem quieter now after about 50 miles use, suppose they need to "bed" in a bit when first fitted... They do seem to make the car feel smoother to me as well...

Just need to test in the wet and more important ice/snow :) which was one of the main reason I had them, it is a 4x4 and I live in a village that does see snow...

So, so far impressed....

Did just go out and check the pressured though.... should all be 2.2 Bar or about 32 psi all actually had 3 Bar or about 46 psi.. little over inflated :( now all 2.2 Bar

Hmm, mine were over inflated after fitting as well - Presume there isn't a recommendation to run at a higher pressure?

With the CC's mine seems uber quiet on the motorway

That is what I thought afterwards but I would think that they would say if that was the case... I do know the tyre company well... I have just emailed them to ask the question so I will see what they say and let you know...

When I had winter tyres fitted to steel wheels for the Rapid I have I did ask and was told to use the same pressures, so I suspect that when they over inflate to fit the tyres and make them "blow out" to seal they just never rechecked..

What do you run in yours now?

I am going out in a short while so I will see how it sounds now... Lol

Just found this on this forum...

 Read 7th reply down...

I left mine at about 35psi - slightly higher than with the last tyres as they wore more at the edges than in the centre (still did over 35k miles on the summer Contis though)

Better than the Continentals on my 4x4, lasted 20000 miles on the rear and around 3mm left on the fronts so I would say 22-23000 if I had left them on..

Did about 40 miles today after dropping the pressure down to 2.2 bar as per the label in the fuel flap, must say seems a lot quieter now and still smooth, MPG seems to have gone up about 4-5 MPG on the trip computer, will see when I do a fill up to fill up reading..

In my experience this can be due to the tyre profile - I picked a poverty spec model with 205/55 16

I've seen ultra low profile tyres last only about 12k miles and cost over £200 each

Could be the reason, as I say the fronts had 3mm left on so I suppose I would have got 22-23000 out of them which matches the mileage I got out of both my Seat Leons with 225/45 x 17's fitted .. Worse one was my Seat Exeo before the Superb, had Dunlop SportMaxx GT fitted first set lasted 10000 miles so I thought I would try them again... 2nd set did the same so I had Goodyear F1's fitted but changed the car about 6 months later...

Quick update....

Having had the CrossClimates on for a week now, and having put the correct pressure in I can say I am impressed, so far they seem a lot smoother and quieter than the Continental SportContact 2's and I do seem to be getting a little more on the MPG front as well .. just need some snow to see how they work lol ... but on the whole first impressions are good...

Crossclimates £78 each fitted with and additional £20 cashback in Amazon vouchers for a set of four - 205/55 R16 94V - from Blackcircles

Loving the tyres - we had some really bad rain the other night when I was driving home (roads like rivers) and the car felt very surefooted indeed. Not sure re fuel economy yet, I'll check after a few fill ups - may be hard to tell as I've hit holiday season, I'm off to France (infact flipped headlight levers last night to get ready!) in a couple of weeks and economy usually hit with the extra load, speed and hills.

Crossclimte + is the later viersion that is supposed to last longer but actually has a worse rating in the wet and thus far is more expensive

I currently run a 2007 Octavia estate and have used the cross climates on it ever since they came out to replace Michelin energy savers.  They were a fraction quieter but running them at the same pressure as normal, they have lasted well and fuel mpg does seem to have been better.  Traction on both wet and dry roads is good and when we have had snow & ice on the roads the tyres performed well.  Pulling out of very snowy Tebay services in March, I had no problems up the hill while most others did (maybe the car being good though helped).

I part ex. this for a 2015 Superb Elegance 170 DSG mk2 hatchback at the end of this month and when the Continentals wear out on it I will swap to Cross Climates.  For me doing 25K miles pa I buy from ATS.  Bit pricier than other suppliers but the tyre insurance scheme they run has come in useful a few times in the past couple of years.

Ok I've had these onfor a week now and I'm finding them ok.just a bit noisy on full lock ,i sent the car into my local dealer today for 4 wheel alignment as ats couldn't do it as they don't have the correct settings for the 4x4.by chance my dealer only charge £40 for this as they have been instructed to recoupe some money as they don't use it often!!thry called me to let me know all wheels are in the green so don't need any adjustments so they didn't charge me anything...bonus

Michelin Crossclimates used in anger for the first time in snow and ice today  - the only problem they weren't mine - they were fitted to my lift share's Peugeot 207. Considering the traffic jams, closed roads and cars in ditches the tyres performed really well.  The road conditions were awful tonight in East Yorkshire with lengthy traffic jams on the main roads (45  minutes + according to Tomtom) - so we ventured onto country lanes. Whilst we took it steady we effectively just drove home normally.

Impressive stuff..

Saying that my wife wondered why I was a little late - no snow at all further East

My fronts are now down to 3mm so need a change. Cross Climates look good from the reviews on here. Can I use them with P7s on the rears? (the rears have 5mm+ so not keen to replace them if I  don't have to.)

Not sure where the reference is but I think I've seen Michelin quote that you can but ensure that the newest tyres are on the rear.

Myself - I replaced as a set of four
