Hologramming

Featured Replies

Hi, can anyone advise me if there is a fast and cheap way to remove hologramming. I believe the paintwork to be black magic finish. It looks bloody awful when the sun hits it. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

You mean a "silver" hologram or prismatic sticker, or an actual hologram in the paint?

I've got the same problem. Basically, my bonnet had been machine polished by an idiot and waxed over.

Whey, ditto!

Yeah guys, actually in the paint. As Stevestruck said, there is evidence of poor machine polishing here and there so assume it's something to do with that.

So, after reading hutchyrs50's post it sounds like a decent machine polish is required. I was kind of hoping there was some way of just removing all waxes, polishes etc. from the affected area and starting from scratch by hand. Thoughts anyone ?

Hey Buddy, you could give it a wash with a strong dilution of shampoo to partially remove the old wax. If working by hand, your easiest option is to "Fill" the holograms with an All in One polish like Autoglym Super Resin Polish. A great filler is 50cal Cover Up Filler Glaze. Review can be found on it by me below.

To remove them, ideally, you need a machine polish to refine what has been done. A detailer could do this for you in a one stage enhancement polish, but will cost upwards of £100.

Hope this helps bud,

Neil

It needs polishing by someone who isn't an idiot :D

Done my fair share of hologram removal.  Key is to refine properly.  Hologramming usually occurs from use of a hard compound in an improper manner, with no refining stages.

I proved this myself when I tested compound use on a black magic bonnet I have spare (Octavia one) and even though I cut fairly slowly (moving pad too quick causes it too), there was still hologramming present.  It can be accentuated by hot weather (i.e direct sun)

I'm going to have a try myself to clean mine up, never done it before but I'll be careful.

Feels like winter is here now so want it done sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I don't have much spare dollar at the moment so I going to try what I've read on polished B's excellent website and buy some menzerna and the correct hand pads and do it myself by hand. Its not a massive area (both off side doors) Like hutchysrs50 says, Its gonna be getting cold soon and I want it doing sooner rather than later.

I had a quick go this morning and very happy with the results.

I washed the car first and left the bonnet wet, got a polishing pad and hockey puck style holder with some polish on and just kept rubbing around lightly.

Cleaned it off and I'd say 80% of its gone, can only see the odd line now when the sun hits it. I've waxed over it for now but it was easier than expected.

Hutchysrs50, did you use the menzerna then on your bonnet ?

I used a black shade of t-cut first, then autoglym super resin polish.

I then washed the car and applied Aqua wax.

Just fitted my new centre caps before and still amazed how the bonnet looks with my minimum effort and products I've had in the garage.

I can only imagine how the paintwork would look if a professional was to do it with proper products.

Agree with all said before though sometimes in hot weather some waxes are too oily and you are chasing it round the car and is very similar to bad machine polishing ..Therefore some waxes I only put on very early in the morning before the sun( ha havent seen that recently) hits the panels or use in cooler temps

My golf got detailed, well ruined, by a detailer was left with Holograms everywhere and buffer trails. Spent two days cleaning and hand polishing with SRP then coat of poor boys black hole then coated with col476 . It's got rid of the mess but I have to keep topping up every 6 weeks as SRP mainly fillers

Seems like blackmagic is a swine to maintain, but looks stunning if it's done correctly. Euro carparts has an online special on Sonax products at the minute. Although the Stockton branch is out of stock on the brilliant shine detailer. No surprise like as it was about half price !!!!!!!!!!!!

Quick update, After washing the vrs with the last of my dodo juice shampoo, I applied some farecla g3 compound on a damp applicator ( in the shade of course ) after buffing off with a clean microfiber cloth I then applied Poorboys black hole by hand again with a new applicator and buffed back off by hand with another clean microfiber cloth. I did this to one door panel only to see what the results were like once the sun came back out. The results I'm pleased to say are amazing :sun: I'm going to tackle the rest of it after my next wash .

Sounds like you have made some great progress with the chosen products. Thanks for the update and detail.

Looking forward to seeing the finished car when complete!  ;)

Which wax or sealant are you planning on finishing it off with?

Well done

You will have to add some protection on top of the Blackhole though

What sealer or wax have you got?

I cant remember off hand what wax I've got. I think it might be Nattys. Its blue in colour and smells divine. Just like bubblegum.

Perhaps a layer of the finishing lacquer has been removed during the polishing process, so no amount of further polishing could disguise this damage.

Sounds about right - great wax; very easy to use.

Maybe not the most durable for the winter months though...
