Service cost

Recommended Posts

I've seen no evidence to back this up, simply hearsay on this forum but it is rumored that VAG's Quantum oil is simply Castrol oil in a non-Castrol container.

As mentioned though, I've seen nothing to substantiate this claim.

Wouldnt surprise me, and a dealer buys it in 45 gallon drums for 50p/ltr

That link is the same as the one in my post #4.

Dealers will charge you what they can get away with.

They are right in that the small print for the fixed servicing costs states for cars three years old and older. However the main dealers I have used have both volunteered these prices on my (at the time) one year old car and have continued to ever since.

They are also right in that all your car needed (according to Skoda's service requirements) was fresh oil and a new oil filter.

The thing is this is a minor (£139) service. So why did they charge you £259? Because they could.

It always pays to do your homework before ringing them up to book it in. It is on the phone where you need to be able to negotiate, not after picking the car up.

Thanks Silver, you are, of course, 100% corrrect. Reason I wasn't negotiating was that I was expecting the fixed priced 2 year service and my understanding of what should be carried out at a 2 year service was based on the work listed under 'major service' on the skoda site http://www.skoda.co....ce/simply-fixed).

What I now understand is that this page is only detailing what gets done on a fixed price 2 year major service and, as the small print confirms, this fixed price servicing is only applicable for cars older than 3 years i.e it's only there to retain your custom once the car is out of warranty, nothing to do with explaining the actual servicing schedule to the customer.

The manual does only list Inspection and oil change after 2 years and brake fluid change after 3, so I suppose every other possible service item is done when required rather than on a fixed schedule and I'm a numpty for not reading the small print :p . I've been round most of the main brands in the VW group in my time and I guess fixed price servicing is just something I've come to expect from main dealers. After all, it's about retaining business rather than squeezing out a few quid from your customers here and there, right? :|

Still, lesson learned, a fool and his money etc etc... :D

2year variable service including pollen filter at an independent (formerly Skoda dealership) at £180 instead of 259 + pollen filter. Happy with that given that I know how fastidious the workshop is.

Yep, I watched the dealer suck my oil out through the dipstick on my dash cam.

So I was surprised to see a new sump plug itemised on the bill.

Wan't bothered though as the total was still £139 as agreed prior to dropping it off. I'm guessing they have a standard breakdown on the bill to get to the total that simply hasn't been updated.

My bill says "20K service" Skodas site says a 20k service is all filters and oil, i only got oil+oil filter

and If (if) it ever goes there again ill mark the sump plug

bloody crooks

Agree that prices are scandalous. There is an element of smoke and mirrors here though. The 20k service does not include all filters. You only get them if required. I seem to recall air and fuel filters are changed at 60000 miles!!!

Yes, but just pointing out that the Skoda 20k service does not include filters unless it fits with the cars service schedule. In your case, as in mine, you won't get air and fuel filters by paying Skoda £259 for a service.

That is why I have gone independent.......I think they are robbing so and so's.

any work not authorised will not be paid for...........

I am totally with you. As it stands service is more dealer focussed than customer focussed. A friend had VW phoning him offering a pollen filter on special offer for £45..............my friend kept asking if he needed one ( which he did not) and all the dealer could say was that it was a special offer.

I have just Minor serviced my wife's runabout for £35.....that is two filters and 4 litres of synthetic oil from Eurocarparts. Dealer price is way over a ton. It's all a joke!

Seems like you all have lower prices than here in Sweden. I recently paid €380 for the first variable service, where they did oil (long life) and filter, and also the pollen filter.

The other authorized skoda service shops were even more expensive

I'm about to do the 120'000 km service on my Superb. This includes engine oil+filter, pollen filter and some "checks", and when checking around with the authorized dealers, the most expensive was the official Skoda store who wanted 5500 SEK (about 440£) and the cheapest wanted 2850 SEK (about 230 £). I talked to the Skoda store and told them of the other prices I had gotten, and asked if they wanted to match their prices, but they didn't seem too interested in servicing my car. Too bad for them, I'll happily go somewhere else!

My local VW specialist..... (A sponsor on here).... Charge £100 for a minor service and £150 for a major service. All done with the same parts / items as used in the dealership.... Even down to the VW screenwash they put in.... Also includes a wash and internal valet if requested.
