Weird loss of power while driving uphill

Featured Replies

Bit of a strange one this. Identical thing has happened twice now. Fabia vRS Mk I 2005 with around 115k on the clock.

Quite early in my journey & I pulled onto the M40 and was getting up to speed up a bit of an incline (junction 6 eastbound if you're familiar) when at around 85 mph in 6th (approaching 3000 rpm) I experienced what seemed like a complete loss of power, like someone had disconnected the throttle. I eased off a bit and tried to depress the throttle again but the engine seemed not to respond. Revs were just gradually decreasing as I was slowing. I tried changing down to lower gears but I was still unable to get any drive.

Eventually I came to a complete stop on the hard shoulder where I put her in neutral and revved the engine a bit. I thought it sounded normal so I set off (had pretty much made it to the top of the hill by this point) and everything was fine for the rest of the journey. Cruised at 85mph with no problem including going (but not accelerating) up an equally steep hill.

Any ideas what happened?

Thanks in advance.

overboost.

You are tripping the car into limp home mode, as suggested probably because the boost pressure is greater than the ecu is designed to allow.

Is it a standard map ? If not, the map might be the issue.

Or more likely the turbo may well be sticking and thus delivering the higher boost level that the map has asked for - hence the Mr Muscle suggestion to clear out the carbon.

I would suggest reading the ECU to see if any codes are stored. A cheap reader or "ELM327" bluetooth adapter and a smart phone are needed.

Or, if you have a laptop, go straight for shareware VCDS  and a suitable cable.

This happened to me now and again, the fault was with the CAM sensor.

a VCDS scan should help, but either sticky vanes, most likeley, or a cam sensor possibly.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Got the ELM327 and checked for error codes using the Torque android app - no codes stored though.

Probably going to give the Mr Muscle treatment a try to see if that helps.
