Is the 184 DSG Scout ‘the’ Octavia to have?

Featured Replies

NO

Yes, I know. This is the same here, I can't get it.

This was just to say that 'what is "the" octavia to have' is really subjective.

I hope everyone is satisfied with the one he gets.

Scout 184....quick and lots of grip/all weather traction....wont be as sharp or perhaps as engaging to drive vs a vRS though.

I think they are rather two different cars serving two different needs.

Not quite the same comparison but I have a 2.0 TDI 150 Elegance and a Mk7 Golf GTD. Whilst there are obvious similarities given their shared DNA, for a keen driver they are like chalk and cheese. The Octavia is v competent but sterile, the steering is slow, the brakes a bit wooden and it all gets a bit scrappy if you start to drive keenly in it.

The GTD isnt massively quicker (though its noticably torquier and provides a better hit of top end power) but its lots of fun to punt around....sure its probably a bit sharper still than a vRS TDI but it will be much more like a GTD....in the same way a Scout 184 TDI motor and 4wd traction apart will be much more like a regular Octavia...its haldex 4wd making up for most of its shortfalls in its suspension setup. I cant say too much about the brakes though as the 184 scout will have 312mm front discs....the 312's on my GTD are massively better than the 288's on my Octavia but probably not as good as the 340's on the vRS.

I have to say having seen a few on the road I just cant get my head around the overstylised looks of the Scout....its trying too hard to look like an A4 allroad and with limited success. The looks definitely divide opinion and no disrespect to anyone do nothing for me.

Its a shame really we dont get the regular 184 4x4 in the UK...but then I suspect SUK wouldnt sell too many scouts if they did. A marketing thing through and through.

You forget that the Octavia is 2inches longer in the wheel base than the GTD..................that affects the handling, bump/ripple absorption, cornering etc.................

Love to see a picture of your VRS loaded with timber :)

Got a tree to cut down next month so will get some piks, I did feel bad loading a new car at first ;-)

Octavia vRS, favoured choice of lumberjack worldwide :p

I know the feeling. Stopped smoking in my car and nearly even used my shell points to get a dust buster ;) Still don't smoke in it, so thats a plus for getting a new car.

Ok so not an Octavia (but MK7 Golf estate), but I have a wood burning stove & also suffer from "oooo look a wood pile"....................

Unfortunately even with the rear seats folded down still no luck in moving this pile to my house................... ....

I think that would take several loads in any car :-D nice to know other people suffer from wood stove wood hoarding though

Kind of sat on the fence and got a vRS and a Scout just in case

I wanted a vrs, couldn't wait the 4months to get one. Ended up with a scout 184 dsg instead. I'm actually very pleased, I think the car suits me far better than a vrs actually would. The scout is definitely more comfortable which is good for my bad back, it's as quick, if not quicker with the 4x4 and a bit of a sleeper. Living in the West of Scotland I think the 4x4 is going to be more and more useful than a vrs. Toys - well yes maybe the vrs looks a little bit better, the xenons would have been nice but then again the scout has a few bits the vrs doesn't. However I do think the scout is lacking some things spec wise for the increased price. Overall, I'm delighted with it and am happy I didn't get the vrs.

Didn't even consider the Scout, I wanted speed and practicality

So what did you go for?

Nice the closest I came was when on holiday and we had a fire place. Was a bit nippy in the morning and evening, thus visited the local woods and the farmer let me have some wood. Made me drive through a pile of saw dust too, ****. He could of waited for me to pass before parking his tracker next to it.

Is this the new wood burning version then? what's it like on the emission test !!

I think you have a few kgs of kindling there on your front splitter, & inside the engine bay etc...................

also nice stacking there of the wood in the boot.........................looks like you've done this before??..................... :D

It's OK until you decide to cook burgers on the engine top............... :D

My vRS could've probably done with the raised ride height for when I collected 32 square metres of turf for my new lawn. Don't think I'll be quite loading it up like that again. Still managed it fine though, just had to take it easy on the way home.

That looks slammed! I had my Passat like that once but not the Octavia. Can't have been much travel left lol!

with the wood burning option it doesn't have the software to put it into eco mode. Next model I order shall make sure to have a sunroof for ventilation ;)

That was my point exactly going through it I cringed, a lot fell off before I got back to the cottage and a lot went inside too. Spent a while cleaning it all out.

It's not my first time either, stacking it in the boot. You can't see from the picture but I did have cardboard down and drove very very slowly the two miles back.

as for burgers on the engine top, not sure if it would taste good on plastic ;)

At least you tried to keep the weight distribution 50/50. putting them roles forward helped!

So I collected my Scout today. First impressions are very good from a performance, comfort and 'kit' perspective. DSG is as good as I remember from my GTI,a bit hesitant as you first pull away maybe but that certainly isn't the case in sport mode. The stop start function is new for me and despite what I had read about issues with it and the DSG, I thought it was excellent with no embarrassing delays. Still haven't thrashed it yet nor tried launch control (that was amazing in the Gti!) but plenty of time for all that.

I am pleasantly surprised how firm the set up is, not the slightest bit wallowy and I would go as far as to say it feels as firm as my standard Octavia that had sports suspension. Going over a couple of humps on an a local B road it was airborne and crashed down a bit which was somewhat unexpected. Not sure if it was because of the increased ride height or if the suspension will soften over time?

No issues with Amunsden postcode issue as reported in other threads, it can be entered immediately, perhaps this is a MY16 improvement?

Minor gripe is that there isn't anywhere to rest your right foot when using cruise unlike in my old car.

Another thing that would be nice is the function where the nearside mirror dips down when you engage reverse so you can see the kerb which I had on the Golf.

Ingrams in Ayr were excellent from start to finish having bought through Carwow.

Collected my Scout yesterday, it replaces my 2011 Leon FR170 DSG.

Very pleased with it except for the lack of front parking sensors and Bi xenon lights, they should both be standard.

Can't find how to input Post Codes on Sat Nav!

Select new destination, country should default to United Kingdom after you first enter it, then tap city field and in the bottom left is a pscd button......select and enter postcode and away you go
