Wheel size

Featured Replies

My new SEL estate 4x4 has 225/45/17 tyres does that make the wheel a 6J or a 7J in width.  Where does one look?>  If it is 7J is there a problem of fitting narrower tyres.  On my recently sold Landcruiser the same wheels have supported 265,285 and 305 tyres.

usually a 17x 7" wide wheel that VAG fit with a 225 wide tyre, well it was like that on my MK7 Golf Estate.

As long as the car is delivered with 225/45R17, it is highly possible that the original rims are 7 in wide. It's no problem to fit 205/50R17 tyres on these rims.

There is no cost saving by going narrower as I have looked into both sizes for BMW trackcar (it has 205/50 on 7j rims and 225/45 on 7.5j rims). Also worth checking with your insurance as it will be a change from standard specification (or modification as they like to call it)

205/50R17 is a listed tyre dimension, as standard. Why should a insurance company bother? In some conditions it will be better than 225 wide tyre (eg aquaplaning).

Maybe insurance is different in Norway but in the UK it's almost a case of any excuse not to payout, anything non-standard will cause questions to be asked, believe me I've been there!! 205/50 R17 in the uk is only listed as a winter tyre

Here too 205/50 R17 is listed as a winter tyre size fitted to 6J wheels.

However, I believe the 6J wheel is due to increasing snow chain clearance rather than due to tyre width.

I have 205/50 R17 tyres fitted to my winter wheels (Dezent TD Grey) which are 7J width without problems.

I ordered them as a set from a reuptable tyre website & they came pre-fitted so there's obviously no problem fitting the two together.

I understand that the insurance companies, big corporatives with lawyers acts as police and prosecutor, it's not right. Enough about that.

Norwegian yes, from the land of strickt regulations. The technical bit by STRO, Scandinavian Tyre and Rim Organization, which all professionals uses as the "bible", along with national authorities legislations.

My car has listed 205/55R16 as standard in the registration document, but delivered with 225/45R17. In addition there are 18's and 19's. Many possible variants. And the 205/50R17 is technically ok, but the problematic one? Ok, I will put down my pen.
