New boots

Featured Replies

Just fitted a pair of new front 'boots' to my VRS Estate, and gone for Kumho KU39.  Early days yet, but it feels a bit more positive on cornering. Original equipment Contisport 2's were down to 2mm after 19K miles - pretty good - and I shall be monitoring wear on the Khumos. Anyone any experience of KU39's?

I've had them on the front of mine for 18 months, my car doesn't get "used" as a vRS but they have felt good on wet and dry roads, the problem I've had is that the walls are cracking, especially on the inside, so keep an eye on that. Also there's no rim protection and the wife has beat the crap out of my rims! Luckily I'm not too precious about them as my learners knock them occasionally too.

I'm looking at changing them for TOYO's all round soon, anyone have experience of them?

For a car that is a vRS. And occasionally gets the wheels touching the kerb or goes over potholes and steelworks on the road,I highly recommend the 'Hifly HF 850' I use in 215/40 R17. 87W XL (Directional)

About £60 each fitted. Good in wet, dry, cold and bad roads and not Ditch Finders.

George can a VRS stretch to 225/45/17 or?? Out of mere curiosity...

They are too big for the vRS,  Rolling Circumference / Total diameter.

205/40 R 17,

215/40 R 17,

(225/45 R 17,)

I have used wheels and tyres off a Audi A1 Competition Line.

235/35/18   & they fitted in the arches.

I have a set of 225/45 R 17 Winter Tyres on 8" rims that i tried on a vRS last year,

i will post the picture to show how much bigger they are.

(They are on my Volvo & run all year, and on the vRS are the M+S, not Winter Tyres in 215/40 R 17)

Does a 45 wall make much noticeable difference to comfort George? My speedo usually reads 1mph lower than satnav or the roadside LED speed check signs, so an increase of 1mph would only make mine spot on the limit which would be perfect if the extra 5mm wall makes a dfference too

you can go 45 profile and brand dependent (Make / Type) the tyres circumference might not be too much of an increase.

205/45 R17 *But i would not advise that you do.* You need to compare them side by side.

But 215/40 R 17 as fitted as standard from 2009-2014 to the Twincharger Polo, Ibiza & A1 are a good choice on a Fabia vRS.

I had the kumhos on my cooper s,found them to be really good, wet or dry they were great, lasted well too,I'd happily have them fitted to my monte

I tried them on the front, after coming from maxxis Z1's..... I found the kumhos cheap (good value) with just as good wet grip (so really good wet grip) but about half the dry grip capabilities off the maxxis Z1's....

so If I were doing "normal" tyres again, I would go maxxis Z1's.

That's a fair bit bigger isn't it? I have Bridgestone Potenza on my A1, they look much bigger than the Kumho on the vRS even though they are both 40 wall, they look higher and sides look rounder. I guess it's just individual manufacturers design

I have had a few 'electronic' conversations with the guys at Kumho and they assure me that current KU39s HAVE got rim protection.  I had Toyos on my last car and they transformed the handling - was tempted to go with them on the VRS, but overall Kumho just got my vote !

Mine are flush with the rims, maybe they've changed the design in the last 18 months then. Hope they are good for you, I'd have them again if I knew they had the protection. I'll try upload some pictures of my front Kumho compared to read Dunlop

Brianleeds,

Why did you need to ask, you have them fitted so do the rims get much protection?

They will not be telling a lie, but then Rim Protectors come in different flavours and some protect alloys a little and some very little.

Finding ones that are giving protection to Gigaro Alloys is not that easy.

These are KU37's.

Touch parking obviously happens quite often with these Wheels / Tyres.
