Amundsen Vs Columbus

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm looking at an SE Business with Amundsen. All the demos are SE-L with the 8" Columbus, which looks great.

Has anyone any experience of the 6.5" Amundsen? Is it just the same but smaller, or is it inferior in other ways?

Hard to justify the cost of the upgrade!

Cheers

Pretty sure it is more than just screen size

Think columbus has built in storage

Better resolution plus more

I think there are some other differences when it comes to the audio if you have the Canton upgrade.

I think they are the same as the 'VW Discover Navigation' vs 'VW Discover Nav Pro' (except entry Discover is now 6.5" screen, not 5.8"). I might be wrong, doubtless someone here will point us in the right direction.

With the MY16 cars with the newer 6.5" Amundsen I don't think there is as much of a difference. (I have the Amundsen) both are same resolution now but the Columbus does have internal storage and a dvd drive (which you can watch films when stationary) amundsen does not.

Good find chadlington! That helps clear things up nicely, except for the navigation descriptions... 2d I get, 3d I get, but 2.5d... what's that all about?!?

Ha! I suspect it's something like 2.5d is when the map is rendered with pseudo-perspective, 3d is when you can see buildings on that map. Just a guess, mind...

Thanks all, certainly clears that up!

With the new 8" Amundsen you can't really tell any differens? Menues look the same as I can see... Is the only differens the map?

I'm about to order Superb Sport Line as soon as it's available here i sweden, but i'm not sure what system to choose

Is there any difference between the 8" Amundsen and the 8" Columbus apart from the Columbus coming with a DVD drive and a hard disc drive? If sat nav updates are 22GB! the DVD drive wouldn't be much use for these.

I am currently deliberating between an SE Tech with options and an SEL and can't see why the Columbus is worth significantly more.

Thought it would be a gimmick but I use the DVD player just about every day... I now always keep a selection of films on one of the SD Cards and have a cheap boxset in the passenger under seat cubby. Currently working my way through The Sopranos.

So when do you get chance to watch films in the car -- while parked up?

No while driving on the motorway of course ! I just recline the seat. Stick the auto cruise on and get the popcorn out....:-D

Given the number of near-accidents from idiot texters and Facebookers I've seen, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find drivers watching videos on the motorway if the ICE system allowed it -- in fact wasn't there a fatal truck accident not long ago where the driver was found to be doing exactly that on a laptop?

Oh please just go away ....

OK -- but tell me where you drive while watching videos so I can try and avoid the area... ;-)

I doubt very much that Nick can watch films whilst moving so maybe I shouldn't have agreed with his 'tongue in cheek' comment. :p

P.S. A dishwasher isn't really a substitute for VIM. :peek:

We all know that it is not possible to watch video on the move, and rightly so, but on a long journey you can pull in for a stop sit back, relax in the car a watch a film if you want so it is a bonus.

My granddaughter loves to sit and watch a Disney movie when we are stopped, in addition you can listen to the film whilst diving if you want to, I have a few music concert gig dvd's and its nice to listen too, even though you can't watch the DVD,just a nice to have.

Sometimes the auto correct throws up such wonderful sentences.

In this case I think it is really Simply Clever that you can listen to a film whilst DIVING, can't do that in an Audi, BMW or Merc.

Sorry RR10, I couldn't resist.
