MPG - first three tanks

First tankful - 29.7mpg - getting used to the car, taking it easy.

 

Second tankful - 25.7mpg - normal driving, fair bit of playing with sport mode.

 

Third tankful - 31.7mpg - done the complete tank in economy mode, driving like a saint :angel:  (was quite hard!  :blush: )

 

Was hoping that being good would've got better economy, not that it really matters.

 

Guess who's not going to bother with economy mode again!

 

Just gone past 1000 miles, so I gave it some beans on the way back from filling up.  I like sport mode  :devil:

Is your vRS a petrol or diesel model?

Pretty poor if petrol and diabolically poor if diesel.

 

There would have to be something wrong somewhere, binding brakes, injection system or lead in your right shoe? :)

It's a petrol Gerry.  Brakes are fine.  A fair bit of driving is crawling in urban traffic so that's what's probably killing it.

 

Steady 48 to 52mph shows 50+mpg on easy roads.

 

Next thing to do is a long run on good roads (if they exist!).  Job for next weekend.

Yes.

 

I have short journeys to work and if I don't do any other driving I might only average 28-31mpg. Maybe 32 maximum if I take the long way home. If I do longer/more constant journeys I might get closer to 40mpg or even higher.

 

That's driving normally(ish) you understand.... if I have my lead boots on then it is significantly less  :p

I'm not in the same car but like other users have said in other threads I think Eco mode is a waste of time. I think I get better mpg in sport mode.

You definitely get better economy in Eco mode but you do have to learn Eco driving. Possibly you can just as good or better economy in Normal but definitely not in sport with the way it holds onto each gear for longer with DSG

@V6TDI do you have DSG? I just experienced flooring it in sport mode on a downhill motorway on-ramp. Boy was it fun... And I only have the 1.4TSI! The gear changing in the DSG is sooo slick!

A lot of urban traffic would explain a lot.

Most dsg users report better economy in sport or normal mode then in economy mode.

I think that is because it requires an awful lot of anticipation to get the best out of coasting in Eco mode so get more returns from the engine braking in the other modes (?)

Have to say so far the TSi and DSG are a good match and even without reving it, it shifts.

Ouch. Got 58.4 mpg on my run back from Snowdonia to Worcestershire tonight of routes from mountain single tracks down the A5 and onwards via Shrewsbury. No eco mode on my old mk2 tdi and no I wasn't in miss daisy mode. Sometimes less is more....

SWMBO is about to buy a ,15 plate ex. demo vRS & after a long test drive today she would like a little extra power.....

 

(Fuel consumption this afternoon, about 80 'ish miles was 35 mpg,& that included school-run traffic. we get app.37 mpg from her Octy 2 FL vRS, so we aren't going to exceed

 our budget! Both cars have DSG, the old one is lower geared with much closer ratios.)

Sub 30 mpg in a tsi vRS!

I'm very close to 30mpg in a DSG Golf R! And most of my driving is city/town with nose to tail A roads at about 40/55mph.

Would of expected more than that, at least low to mid 30's.

RB79 - yes it's a DSG - 6 speed.  I'm just back from Gatwick and needed to rein it in a bit when joining the M23.

 

Mallet - I'm using Tesco Momentum 99.

 

Ben, I dunno, maybe it is my driving style if you're doing that well in an R.  The car's clearly capable of good mpg as I can get it regularly on the dash, but the roads around here aren't long enough  :notme:   The HOT 9-5 Aero I had before the Superb averaged around 26mpg and that was bit of a guzzler (but a lot of fun with it).

 

Long run next weekend methinks.  Mrs V6TDI is currently en-route to Perth, Australia.  So I'm on my tod and am thinking next weekend would be a good one to go and see Whin Sill as she didn't go much on the journey up to Newcastle, whereas I did.

 

Maybe it just needs a bit of time to get used to me and loosen up a bit.

 

I'm not actually concerned about the MPG.  People will always get better MPG than I can.  Was just disappointed that my efforts when being saintly weren't better rewarded.  Purgatory maybe for something bad I did in a previous life.

What fuel are you using?

Esso regular diesel with millars ecoboost. It was on the maxidot trip display rather than brim to brim so real world probably a couple of mpg less than that.

My first 12K miles within a VRS TSI.

I'm still not clear whether the tsi should be run on what octane after reading other threads.

My petrol flap says min 95, but it also says 'super unleaded' which, in the uk at least, is deemed 97.

So the consensus seems to be.....it runs fine on 95. 97 will see some performance improvement (or 95 will see a performance loss, however you want to spin it). There appears to be no real world test evidence really to prove that 97 gives better mpg, but some say it's 'cleaner' for the engine.

Can someone enlighten me? Apologies if this drags the op's thread away a bit....

You shouldn't be driving for economy with a new engine.  You need to be getting pressure behind the rings for the first 3-5 tanks.

 

My TSI - 98ron all the time.  It gives noticeably better economy and more torque

Wouldn't say I am personally, just trying to follow the advice in the manual (build revs up slowly). But at the moment I'm just stuck in traffic mostly. Hoping to give it a good run this weekend.

 

Certainly cannot wait for the miles to pile on and see what it will do.

Traffic at the mo has been shocking (and not helped by the weather). Going to have a good run at the weekend though.

The Super vs Premium debate can go on forever. Higher RON is of course "better" than lower RON, but not all cars benefit from it all of the time.

 

My own results above show the following:

*29 tanks of Premium average 28.2mpg

*16 tanks of Super average 27.93mpg

 

My feeling when driving the car is that performance and smoothness remain unchanged, but perhaps I am not very sensitive.

 

Others say they feel a real difference, but whether this is real or placebo I do not know. I only go by what I feel and by my measured results. My old Subarus were a completely different story because they loved the expensive stuff (or perhaps RON placebos worked better on me then?).

Yes so far all good. Apart from on collection it did not come with pedals (meaning the VRS style). So this has happened a few times that they have been left off from the factory, but should have been picked up on PDI.

 

Sound generator makes me chuckle, quite entertaining really. Fuel consumption is too early as only have a 190 miles on it so far. Runs fine on the 19's.

 

What I'm surprised by is how it goes up the gears, it will go in to 5th at 30 (around town speed), which is something my MK2FL would never do.

 

Only negative point I've found so far is the droning noise up to 30mph, but only on one section of road (which happens to be my route to work), it's not overly nice on the ears, but I guess I will get used to it.

Pretty much correct there.

I think the 'super/premium' fuels also have more additives/detergents etc that help to clean your engine/injectors etc. If that's correct then it should mean less friction = more efficiency. Whether the real world mpg is altered by this I don't know.

Mine personally always gets Shell v-power (petrol). It's the most expensive however it's the only petrol that has a RON of 99, I think (certainly round here anyway).

The 2.0tsi will fun perfectly well on anything from 95 upwards though.

Tesco "Momentum" is also 99. But Tesco petrol stations are rarer than rocking horse manure.
