White Smoke

Featured Replies

Hi guys/girls..

Im worried..

I put some oil in my fabia 1.4 mpi this morning, went out, was stuck in traffic and all of a sudden a mass amount of white smoke started coming out the exhaust.

Luckily i was nearly home so only had it happen for around 500 meters.

The feel of the engine wasnt effected and the temperature stayed normal..

Is there a possibility i put too much oil in...?

Or am i screwed and the head gasket is f**ked?

Hopefully someone can give me a clue.

Cheers.

Dan.

Likely you overfilled it, try using the dipstick and keep the oil level halfway between min and max.

Just out of interest, what drove you to put oil in and how did you gauge how much to put in...?

I just had a small amount left so i put it in as i hadnt topped up for a while and i was in a rush so didnt check the dipstick (stupid... I know lol)

Hopefully its just that and not anything more serious..

Cheers.

Have you checked your dipstick to see how much over it is? When you say a bit left, was it like 1 litre from a 5 litre bottle or just a bit in a 1 litre bottle?

Havnt checked yet.

It was about 1/2 a litre maybe ..

Check your coolant level too, while the bonnet is open.

Yeah will do.

Thanks.

White smoke can be excess oil consumption.

So I'd check that before worrying about anything else. It could be an over-fill burning off, or you could have popped a seal due to over-pressure from an over-fill, or it could be HGF (hence the comments about coolant level)...

Hi. There does seem to be too much oil.

The coolant level seems fine.

Suddenly arising white smoke can be caused when oil or hydraulic fluid is spilt onto a hot exhaust manifold - I had this from a leaky power steering pinion oil seal sqirting straight onto manifold (not a skoda).

I have had it ( on an ancient car in the 70's) ,where the brake master seals leaked, allowing brake fluid into the servo, and into engine.
