Thinking of a Citigo for the missus

Featured Replies

The wife has a Fabia TDi estate on a 2008 plate with 106000 miles on it.

I am considering chopping it in against a Citigo 5 door in SE trim.

I can get one for around the 50-60 quid a month on a pcp by trading the fabia in.

Now the fabia has been ok, but the citigo would be much more suited to the type of driving and commuting she does, add to that the fact it has no mot, cheaper insurance?, as good fuel economy, peace of mind with the warranty it almost seems like a no brainer to me.

But, i would love to hear opinions from people who have the SE trim. What has the car been like to own? Whats the equipment level like, the wife certainly wants A/C hence the SE but what about things like the trip computer etc i have in my Octavia?

Whats the real world MPG of this little 1.0 engine like? What is it like on a longer run/motorway journey.

If anyone has a pic of a tornado red one i would love to see it too please.

Thanks

Hyphons has a tornado red se, look in the picture thread for pics of it

I'm pleased with my SE. I get 60-65mpg measured by the PID on my daily commute (about 10 miles country A-road, 5 across the city) depending on how much traffic there is. I've seen higher on days when agri traffic has forced everyone down to 45mph in 5th gear. Never done any super-scientific fuel yield measurements, but it's certainly not a thirsty car.

It's had a few niggles, but these were all fixed under warranty. Good fun to drive, certainly the best I've driven of its class (here I treat the up! and Mii as the same car). Nicely-weighted controls and a decent feel. Might seem a bit "rough" at first if you're not used to a 3-cylinder engine, but it more than holds its own on a motorway -- there it does just as well as any other small VAG I've driven.

Equipment wise it has what I'd deem "essential extras" (air con, RCL, electric windows, and that cool pump-action seat height adjuster). Air con was very effective this summer. My PID came from my parents' up! when they realised they never used it, I use it mostly for the MPG readout and as a music player. Interior is functional and the trim design is straightforward and restrained.

I'd have another one, but I wouldn't go for the white paint again. I think next time it'll be red with some sexy black alloys.

I'll take a picture of the wifes if I get chance to wash it! It's a great car, nippy and very cheap to run. Hers is tornado red with 5 doors. Stereo's not up to much. Wish I'd splashed out on the PID as well.

how much extra is the PID thing ????

I assume theres no other trip computer or anything to check your MPG with unless you get the PID ?

I think if i can trade the old wifes old Fabia in and get an SE citigo 5 door for less than £60 a month its a bargain. But i wonder if i am missing something lol

Her daily commute is 10 miles each way, mainly A and B roads so i would imagine she would get good MPG.

weve a Monte Carlo citigo, real world mpg around town is about 44mpg for me, which tbh im more than happy with as its all 30-40mph roads and some spirited back roads on the way home.

i liked the standard car but the gloss trims on the Monte Carlo really stood out for me, coupled with the black rims and the sports seats it was a no brainer.

PID was the one option i got and wouldnt hesitate to reccomend it again, they are a cracking little car and i dont think you'd regret it at all :)

How much is the PID ?

Just checked, £300

Not sure i am going to stretch to that tbh.

Maybe being a bit tight but happy with £60 a month and the sort of deposit i am putting down.

Does the car come with footwell mats as standard???

You really cannot go wrong and she will love it - drives well and I get about 50 mpg on 17 mile city traffic jam/motorway commute.

SE has the a/c and height adjustable seat, as mentioned above - you don't really need anything else but you can always add a PID after if you want the sat nav and trip computer fuel read out, bluetooth and music storage. Otherwise you need to add the parking sensors/trip computer/cruise option. Electric mirrors are not standard but expensive bundled with heated seats and fog lights. Better leave it standard if you can.

You need to add mats and I added a plastic boot mat too.

The SE now comes with the grey/black trim that was standard on the Elegance not the black with grey panel seats - should look very nice with the red.

Good luck!

SWMBO has a little 62 plate SE from 400 miles and a few months old.

It is excellent all-round town car and she loves it, it has good visibility and in SE trim it has a/c and central locking too.

I say town car, yes people will argue it does this and does that but I find it painful chopping gears all the time on a dual carriageway/motorway, so no it is no motorway car IMHO and from personal driving.

It's great nipping around the smaller roads and very good for tight parking being fairly square to view the corners.

It has a sensible boot, takes all our weekly shopping and comfortably seats four adults(not in the boot)!.

The PID now shows a lifetime mpg of 53.6 over 7k miles it has on it. Did a deal for the PID after at a knock down price ;)

Negotiate a set of mats, they are only a few quid and I've never bought a car yet without getting them in the deal :)

Sorry forgot to mention motorways: I owned a Fabia and find the Citigo similarly stable and a little quieter on the motorway; it also has a better seat so more comfortable. I find flexibility and acceleration fine - 50-70mph in 5th is probably similar to my Toledo/Rapid 1.2tsi in 6th.

My MPG has never dropped below low 50s.

Re longer journeys my Mii copes with the 220 mile run to Devon (from London) admirably whether I take the motorways or A roads. It will sit all day at 70 quite happily and it feels solid and planted. And it is a hoot on the twisties with the little 3 cylinder rasping away.

As noted above you really can't go wrong with these cars. They are cheap to run, fun to drive (really!), and surprisingly spacious.

One thing though - spec the spare wheel for £50-60

I was considering the spare wheel, as you say for £50 it seems quite reasonable. But think of the weight saving without it???? lol

Could make all the difference in a traffic light grand prix with similar vehicles. lol

I'd get your car (or lead boots) checked. I've seen 80+MPG when really trying on the right route, very rarely see under 55mpg and usually get a calculated 60mpg out of a tank, 16 miles a day, mainly 40,60,60mph roads.

If it's for your wife you might want to check out the Mii. My wife tried the Up! and the CityGo and didn't like them but as soon as she got into the Mii it was love at first sight!

Don't ask me, it's a female thing. :notme:

5door Mii sport in red by the way.

Had lots of quotes via carwow, the Mii just doesn't seem anywhere near as competitive unfortunately. She likes the look of the Renault Twingo, i can see why she may, but i pointed out that as it is a Renault it WILL end up breaking at some point. lol

You can pick a PID unit up fairly cheap second hand, the same unit from the Mii & Up! also fits the Citigo and automatically codes to the cars ECU to read it's a Skoda, the SE trim will be perfect, it has all the features one would need for a daily driver and it's also comfy too, I find after about 5 - 7 hours driving it can get a bit tiring though

Standard SE Spec Citigo with optional winter pack (heated mirrors + seats), 14" Apus alloys and full sized spare wheel

I've always thought the Mii has the nicest interior of the three. For some reason SEAT doesn't seem to be pushing them so hard though -- no 0% Solutions at the time I got my Citigo. My decision to "switch" to Skoda came down to cold hard money numbers.

I wondered why you had fog lights. lol

The winter pack seems good value to be honset. But the deal i have been offered is for a car in stock so i wont be getting any extras for the missus.

Also as a Yorkshireman the final decider is the price, for less than £60 a month i just dont see how you could get a new car for less.

Mine would do mid to high 40's most days around down in stop start traffic, best on a run (PID figures) was 79.9mpg.

Would I get one for my Mrsus (if she had a licence that is) then yes yes yes!

Best little car out there IMHO.

Im only a month into ownership. But so far - I rarely get below 50mpg, but struggle to get it above 60 and Im pretty careful.

Mines an SE, but Ive got Monte wheels and few other tweeks to make it look way better than it did! Just need to do the tints but Im skint for a few months while we move house!

Only thing I miss is 4 speakers and heated seats, other than that for what it is its a great car. My forum name gives away what Ive come from so thats some praise. I love the cheap running, the fun handling.

Adding 2 more speakers is do able ;) done it with mine, zip ties drill and an earth cable

I wouldn't get another one. I have a Monte Carlo 5 door. You can get an Ibiza or similar for the same money. The interior on the SE is basic the steering wheel is horrndous. If you can go for the Monte the interior is 100 times better. Citigos are basic and as I have said for the same money you can get better cars.

I think the Citigo/Mii/Up are far better than their direct competitors i.e. Fiat 500 and Aygo. It doesn't have the retro appeal of the 500 granted but it is far more spacious and economical. I think the Picanto and i10 come closer but I just preferred the Mii.

Yes I could have bought a Fabia for the same price as my £9,000 Mii but it had one of the older more inefficient engines, and the interior was the very definition of drab and basic. To me that wasn't worth the trade off in space and 5 doors that I don't need. The Fabia also wasn't as engaging to drive as the Mii.

As a cheap city runaround that can take the occasional longer journey in its stride I think these cars are perfect. I can't see the logic of buying a larger more inefficient car from the class above...

I havent managed to source a sub £60 a month for a Fabia or Ibiza with a couple of grand down and 0% finance. If someone has seen such a deal then i would really appreciate you sharing it.

Thanks

That would improve your fuel consumption if tethered to a suitable earth spike. :giggle:
