1.9 66kw TDI to SDI

Featured Replies

Hi yet again,

The turbo in my TDI engine isn't working and the price to fix it just isn't justifiable. I was aware of the turbo being broken when I bought it in UK but it was never much of a problem until I got on a single lane roads and had to overtake slower lorries. It can take around 30-45 seconds to pass sometimes because of the lack of turbo so this got me thinking

Would it be possible to remap the TDI engine to an SDI engine (at 50kw) simply so the engine will ignore the fact the turbo is there and give me a bit more power when I'll actually need it? I remember reading that the engines were the same, just the turbo part was missing and the input covered with a blanking plate.

It is not a good idea..

How come?

I suggest you look up how a turbo charger works.  It's an integral part of the exhaust and air intake system.  The "input" is the exhaust gases from the engine driving the turbine blades, and the output is the charged air going into the intercooler and then the air intake.

Whilst you could physically remove the turbo, you'd then have to fit the intake and exhaust from the SDI.

It sounds like your car is in limp mode.

What about it is broken? If it's physically breaking up, then it's possible still driving it will damage the engine.

I do not know the details, but I was once told, that the SDi works at higher pressures than TDi due to the lack of turbo. I do not know if so called remap would take care of this fact.

It reminds me of similar speculations when some SDi owners thought of an idea, that they would fit a turbo to SDi engine.

I just have no power when I should. It's not a major problem as I've driven it like this for over 6000 miles now. There are two errors on VCDS that are P3105 and P1654. I don't know how I can test the turbo, all I know is that it doesn't kick in when it should.
