Upgrading the Xenon Bulbs

I wouldn't waste your money on eBay items. If the bulbs even work they won't even be as good as the crappy OEM Phillips.

  • The dipped beams are better than on my old mk3 Mondeo with Xenon. Not sure about the high beams yet. The biggest problem as I see it, is that AFS gives a too wide and short beam, unless going faster t

  • I found this vid on youtube: Philips XenStart vs. Osram Cool Blue Intense comparison. I can't see much difference in their brightness...or it's just me..? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtfO5OrIBPs

  • I have also been eyeing up the CBI's & saw them today on hids direct which is the cheapest going but as you said the box is slightly different! Found them also here for £99:00 http://www.hids4u

So, I've always hated the horrible yellow on the cutoff line on the headlights. I've done a few retrofits now and the yellow on the cutoff is down to 2 things.

1)The clarity and/or position of the front lens

2) The positioning of the cutoff shield

I have decided to mod the std projectors (free mod) to try and eliminate the poor cutoff and it went quite well. All it takes to get rid of the yellow is to bring the shield closer to the bulb. This can be done by removing the bulb and with a 90 deg pick and just tweak it towards the opening slightly.

Results below, right hand is tweaked, left hand is not.

I have now done both and it looks better - nice free mod

That looks quite good, makes the light appear brighter and sharper. I suspect it's the optic quality that hinder the performance not the bulb itself.

When you say tweak, what exactly did you do?? Is there a screw that can be adjusted?

Interesting, but seems a bit pointless unless it actually improves the way the light looks on the road?

Would this work on MK2 pre fl?

It just looks bluer at the cutoff and bluer to other drivers. Without compromising the light colour, and looks nicer against the road signs

It works with any projector, just be careful you don't tweak it to far forwards as you will reduce the light intensity at the cutoff.

You have to remove the D3S bulb and using a 90 deg small pick, insert the pick through the opening and hook it around the bi xenon shield. Once done give it a sharp pull, what you are doing is bending the cutoff shield towards the bulb but only by a fraction.

Hi xpower! :)

Any updates about the bulbs? Are they brigther now?

I have a 2014 Superb 2 FL with oem bixenon... I also have 2014 VW Touran with bixenon, the same bulbs.. But the output in the Touran is wider (more light on both sides) and the cutoff is sharper... Have tought about maybe change the lens to a clear one... But I know the headlamp lens is a NIGHTMARE to remove.. Not the bake in oven method we used before.

I have also done a few retroes... My second problem is that the S2 FL have to REMOVE the bumper to get the lightbulb out... Maybe I can take the torx screws of the cover and get access but I really dont know about that. :(

Do u think the projector can be removed from behind on my S2 FL? The cover is REALLY big.. And do u know anything about which company that makes projectors for skoda/vag? :)

Maybe swap in touran proejctor, or even FX-R (If thats possible)

Last question... Do u know if the projector in the octy 3 and S2 FL is simmilar? :)

Im considering buying a spare lamp from ebay to play with! :)

Adding a picture of my S2 FL cutoff.. I don't know what u think about it:

Hi, I don't know what projecor the superb uses, the Octavia 2 used a Hella one. Does your superb have AFS2?

The CBI bulbs don't seemed to have colour shifted or got brighter, I'm going to put a Phillips bulb back in this week and compare though.

Your cutoff isn't to bad but it isn't sharp and clear. A FX-R 3.0 retro fit would be great but you would need to take the headlight apart first and do some measurements. The FXR does have quite a big casing all the way to the lens so that would be your biggest difficulty.

Why not go with an OE BI-LED retrofit from someone like Valeo? That's what I am considering for the Octy 3, they will be brighter, white/blue with a gorgeous blue / purple hue at the cutoff. They will set you back £600-£650 but would be amazing and totally unique!!!!

Of course... I've tought about that too :) Yes I have AFS... AFS2.. Is that a new system? I have city mode, highway 1,2,3 and rain mode etc. :)

I know the cutoff is ok.. But FAR away from crispy and clear.

I've had both mini H1 v5 and FX-R 3.0 in another car. The dream will be if a OEM bi-led projector will fit fine inside, OR if a clear lens would fit :)

I asked a seller on ebay to send me pictures with the back cover off the lamp.. Haha. So I upload when I get them!

OE Bi-LED?? Is this available for the O3? Exciting stuff if it is!

Not available. U have to retrofit urself :)

If it's OE, then surely it must be fitted somewhere?

U take the oem bi led units from another car and retrofit into the octavia headlight :)

How are LEDs in the winter?

Do they have capabilites at all to melt snow/ice on the glass?

Just FYI here is a comparison between the CBI's at "5000k" which look more like 4300k in the damn awful projectors vs cheap 8000k ebay ones. The ebay ones aren't as purple as the look in the pic, more of a nice blue.

The CBI's just aren't good enough or should I say with these projectors you can't polish a tu*d.

So options are:

I think the superb 2 fl have another projectors. :) Better output. Of course not like fxr, but pretty ok. I'm gonna throw in philips d3s x-tremevision bulbs now to see how they perform! :)

No, and when they freeze over you can't see anything at all out of them. At least that was the way in my last car. Got caught out one or two mornings where I forgot to throw some warm water on them.

If anything I find the very sharp cut off a bit nasty as the range is quite short on the dipped beam.

I'll be getting them checked when in for the first service, but it's not ideal.

Full beam is however fantastic.

Hi all, fitted these,  http://hidreplacements.com.au/hid-r-n-88r-d3s-ultra-performance-xenon-bulb-globe.html   to my 2015 Octi 3 Ambition plus hatch with Tech Pack and consider them to be a worth while upgrade. They wont burn your retina's out , but still improve output to 3500 lumins and change colour up to 5000 kelvins,( Xenstarts are 3200/4300) bit whiter than the Xenstarts, bigger high beam and dipped is improved, cheers,Jkeys.
