Can a numpty DIY fit the Slip ring / Power Steering pump?

Featured Replies

Hello again folks.

Does anyone know the going rate for fitting a replacement Drivers Air Bag Slip ring and also the Electro Hydraulic Power Steering pump please?

I have a price but just working out if these are reasonable...

Also - are these the sort of things someone thoroughly mechanically inept could do - do you know please?

Both are being very naughty.

Thanks

Jon

Either you are under selling your abilities or telling the truth, if it is the latter, working on airbag components/circuits is not advisable - could be fatal in worst case, sore in best case if things go wrong or you get it wrong.

Definitely not underselling my abilities, brain is alright but hands are less gifted.

I'd leave it well alone. Unless you are particularly dexterous quite a bit of the front needs to come off to access the pump (may be able to get away with the wheel+ arch liner, but you'd need to get it up on a stand and move bits out of the way). You'll need to refill the fluid which will mean taking the battery off - personally I wouldn't do it before the pump is back in situ and all the pipes are back as they should, you'll need to make sure the system is filled with fluid too (procedure online I'm sure) and top it off.

The squib* as I believe they are called, is an easy enough swap but getting the airbag off is frustrating (unplug the battery for 10+mins to be safe before attempting this) and you'll need the spline bit to remove the wheel... etc.

Seems like two simple jobs but spline bits, torx bits and access make them tricky.

* I have no idea why I believe they are called squibs, I tried to verify this naming and came up with nothing. I like the word though...

Hell I love the 1.2 setup, can get to fluid without removing anything :D

A squib is simply a small explosive device, a banger is a squib.

Thanks - so just trying to figure out what to do, clearly too clever a job for me - what's the general thinking - is this something worth paying to have fixed or shall I keep looking for a new car!
