I feel your pain Stuart :(

Xman is really good when it comes to returning things, so hopefully he'll sort you out.

As said, it looks like impact damage. Kev's looked similar but was running a foam filter. I took mine off and it had absolutely no damage to it. I was running a foam filter too!

Gutted to read this mate.

Early days yet but a cause of failure needs to be found, so it'l be worth checking the intake system for any debris that might have made it through or any sign of where any foreign objects might have come from.

Don't want to teach a granny to suck eggs, but we've worked with a high tolerance with yours so it was one of those which should run forever, so need to establish what went wrong.

Anyway, there's not a lot a tuner can do about FOD, but if you need any assistance on the software/monitoring side of things, or even just a helping hand with the refit you know where we are.

Good luck!

Kris

Here are some pretty good shots from the Bedford circuit photo person...............................I stripped the turbo off on Sunday and found a tiny rice sized piece of metal in the air filter? no holes in filter? Then sent the turbo to a man in the sticks near Blackpool for a really well priced rebuild. Should have it back by the weekend. Also ordered a pipercross foam filter this time.

So the air filter was sucking in metal?!

Where from then....

I know, I am as baffled as you are! Going to saw the filter up on night this week and see whats what....................................going to pop the boost pipes off to check them and blow some air through the intercooler aswel............

Yeah, I'd definitely clean the pipework and intercooler out. All those metal fragments have gone somewhere. I'd say the first bend straight out the turbo will have some on.

It's worth doing when changing the turbo anyway so might as well.

Darkside also recommends running the engine with both manifolds off to throw any excess crap out the engine. Oil feed is looped to the oil filler cap.

I did this when my turbos failed.

Thanks Stevo, but I drove 155miles home with no boost so pretty certain if anything could have come out it will have done by now - if not its already in the bores. We will see. Turbo should be back on at the weekend if all goes to plan...........

Update! The turbo took a bit longer to rebuild than I thought - the company i used in Blackpool were excellent I can highly recommend them - was only £230 and it has had a full rebuild i think the only original bits are the housings.

Anyway, as I work away mid-week I have not had much time on the car but due to the long weekend we just had i managed to get it all rebuilt and road tested! all is well again.....................................i have come down to work in my temporary car again though to be safe as still not got the downpipe bolted up as well as i would like (its a nightmare!) and need to plug VCDS in and check actuator is moving enough and take some logs to see if achieving full boost.

Can't wait to get back in the car i really miss the silly little Skoda!

What were there thoughts on the damage to the turbo?

And did you get around to chopping open your S2000 filter to look inside?

Glad to see you're back on track :) just wondering how you found the mintex pads on track before your turbo popped? Any marked improvement over oem?

They were excellent - big improvement over the oem pagid things i had on so well worth the £117 quid i think. Although the car is very quick even at 2bar and i dont think the 312's would be good enough for track use when at 2.5bar - they don't give huge confidence when approaching corners at 100mph on full boost............

The rebuilder just said clearly something has gone right through it then its got very hot so the shaft was foobarred aswel. Been meaning to saw that filter up all weekend but forgot as was so deep into rebulding the car! was very stressfull and tiring its not an easy conversion when the engine is in place! Second pair of hands would of helped mind!

Ah right, get it done then! :D

Looks like a new actuator on the turbo? And label states not to adjust it.

Can you put up the boost logs when you log it please to see how it's been set up?

Yeah the whole lot bar the housings are new Kev - discussed my setup at length with the guy at Turbo Rebuild and advised him not to try and set it up as he would try and do it to manufacturer spec, therefore just balanced the thing.

He thought i was nuts sticking this on a PD lump! and yes, no problem at all to post the logs when iv'e done them hopefully this weekend.

Just been out for a run in the car with laptop plugged in - seemed to boost perfectly - forgot how fast the thing was! took a group 11 log and seems like its achieving requested boost ok and duty cycle look about 70% at 4k rpm. Just got to get the damn downpipe fitted properly now and wash the things its horrible now its been sat on the drive for 3 weeks!

Its been said that the air filter you have doesn't filter small enough particles, and the big un will damage the turbo.

Btw what / where did you get the pipe for the MAF delete?

Not sure i understand your comment about the air filter - hard pipe is from darkside.......................was about £120 i think

Air filters that are foam allow larger particles though, which when hitting the impeller with such speed can distort the edges and over time cause it to fail. The paper filters ie s2000/ standard filter smaller particles, there are loads of discussion on here if you search or google fabia air filter etc.

- would guess as your tracking it, your car will be subject to loads more particles than if road driving?

Before you chop open the S2000 filter have a look into it with a torch to see if the thin inner steel strengthener has got any bits missing.

Replaced mine today for a new one as it was looking filthy, inside is very clean tbf.looks to be filtering the air spot on :)

He is using an S2000 filter, but good advice all the same :)

So, the car is running really well now for a few weeks (1000 miles ish) - sure it is quicker than it used to be! its damn fast even at 2bar...........................................

Anyway, I have changed my mind about track use for this year - I have sold my blue track wheels to a member on here - I cannot risk track use when i need the car for doing 500 miles per week for work. I now intend on getting a new Golf Clubsport, or maybe something daft like a B7 RS4 and using the Fab as a work horse and leaving the new car at home midweek.

So, i paid a visit to a local scrapyard yesterday for these...........................................as my seats are ripped and minging! Full set of MK2 VRS seats.
