(URGENT) WIFE JUST PUT £20 PETROL IN MY TDI

Featured Replies

My idiotic wife has just put £20 petrol in my 1.9 diesel.

Its going to cost £250 to drian via the RAC, but will filling it up with diesel to dilute the petrol work?

You need to get as much petrol out as possible. Maybe try siphoning the old fashioned way?

did think you could do that anymore!?

RAC are coming now, best be safe than sorry i guess.

If it was just a few litres I'd say fill it to the brim with diesel and take a chance, but not half a tank.
RAC is the right choice.

Not sure if there's a baffle or anything preventing you siphoning. Hope they sort it for you.

We diluted successfully when my wife stopped after about £5 worth of petrol into nearly empty tank. Just a view but I would not think you'd get away with it even if tank was almost empty.

Hope you resolve it.

£20 is over 3 Gallons, so you need it drained, do not try diluting.

I hope she did not run the engine.

You might get someone to do it for less than the RAC want.

Depends on where you are.

(Any encampment of Tin Tent Dwellers can be handy & do it for a few quid, and take the tank contents from you.)

I just get the Pipe in past the Anti-Syphon, and Syphon.

Obviously you need enough Containers and someone to take the Mis-Fuel.

1,9 TDI is not common rail but I'd avoid driving with petrol anyway.

There is some anti-syphon system but maybe a pipe with small diameter could be the solution. If you drain most of the fuel, add some diesel, then  drain it again and then fill it full - it might be it.

Updated your original post for you.

The Saudi Arabians are on to something, their wives will never do something like that.

Summary is that it depends on the engine but a modern CR engine must not be run even for a few seconds. Easy to open up the fuel tank as its lid is under the rear offside seat.

That, cheap transfer pump and a few cans. Save at least £200.

Maybe the dieselgate saga spooked the wifey!!!!!

By the way, check your insurance policy. Some cover this all-too-common mishap.

If the car run then you in trouble for 100%. If not, clean it from under the rear seat and put the diesel and you are fine again. I was clean it once next to the pump, took me two hours labour and lot of paper.....

I was told that if you put petrol in a diesel motor then don't panic too much as diesel is a dirty fuel and would be able to cope with it. But if you put diesel in a petrol motor stop immediately and switch off and get it all drained out as the engine won't be able to handle it. I would syphon out as much as I could and then refill with diesel. Phone up a friendly mechanic and see what he says

Not true im afraid....petrol reduces the diesels lubricating properties which by its very design relies upon....if petrol gets into the diesel fuel pump it tends to knacker it...if not then and there shortening its service life.

Its bad enough if youve turned the ignition on to prime the pump never mins run it.

I did it to a works Astra J 2.0 DTI years back and didnt start it and was told I was quite lucky I didnt turn it over...and if it had been a Common Rail could have totalled the motor.

In short if its been run with petrol in it you could have a costly ticking timebomb on your hands.

Gather petrols deal with diesel contamination a little better, tend to run a bit rough but still runs providing its not too contaminated...probably serves to damage the cat though.
