Winter tyres which brand for my Octavia?

Featured Replies

As expected mytyres have cancelled my order. I contacted them explaining that I have been a loyal customer over the years spending a lot of money with them (I bought winter tyre and wheel packages for both mine and my parents car last year) and they just weren't interested. They Insisted they are out of stock and unavailable yet they are showing in stock still but at almost double the price. They refused to comment and just cancelled the order. Placed an order with camskill instead.

Nokian WR DS on my standard alloys. Absolutely brilliant last year.

I had an order cancelled when they mis-priced full steel wheels with tyres for something like £40 each. They did say they couldn't honour that price and it was a mistake though. Since TyreLeader came into the market, I've found them much cheaper anyway.

Someone has now emailed saying that there was an error on the website and they cannot provide the tyres at £57.60. Infuriates me that they try and lie their way out of it twice...

Can guarantee if there is an error on their website and someone pays too much for an item they won't give a ****!

Never considered Tyreleader before but if camskill can't provide the Goodyear Ultragrip Performance Gen-1's that I have ordered for £97 I'll go to Tyreleader for the the conti TS850Ps at £105

They are also cheap for 16" CrossClimates which I am looking at for the Mrs' car.

As a Finn it is nice to see that Nokian is recognised as a high quality brand. However, guys, if you experienced the winter tyres we have up here in the north... :)

I myself am driving with Goodyear Ultragrip Ice studless (yep, we also have studded here), and these take the grip beyond you can imagine. From Nokian the equivalent would be Hakkapeliitta R2, which is a superior studdless winter tyre.

Should you be going Alpine, have a look at winter tyres really designed for winter conditions - even in Finland people survive with Central-European winter tyres, but when you can get so much more grip with 100-200£... Don't save it - you enjoy driving more!

Yup the winter tyres we have are a much softer compound, to retain some flexibility when it's -35°C. Driving with them in milder winter weather is akin to have a Rowntree's jelly wrapped around each rim.

Just had Nokian Weatherproof x 4 put on the vRS ;) & as I can't really comment on how great they are at the moment as we need some real cold weather for me to try them out etc but I did have to drive home 50-60 miles with them just being fitted & I found the road noise so much more quieter, even thou it was raining cats & dogs :) the tyres seem to hold the road very well & feel planted to the road.

It is as I have said before, which winter tyre is best depends entirely on the use you will put it to, and much more so than the summer tyres as there are more specialist types of winter tyre.

I have driven on hakkapeliittas quite a bit and they are fantastic tyres when it is -20 in snow but would be next to useless for me where I am now whereas I would not take my TS850s up there in the winter if I had to get places in a hurry.

Horses for courses never more apt than when talking about winter tyres.
