Steering vibration + knocking under de-exceleration

Featured Replies

My 03 plate ambience is suffering from severe steering wheel vibration whilst under braking (like imbalanced wheels) and also knocking noises when de-excelerating.Your views gratefully received

Assuming your wheels bolts are correctly tightened I would suspect worn suspension bushes or top mounts.  Also worth trying some repeated enthusiastic braking.

Thanks Trundlenut. Both front tyres replaced in recent mot .l was thinking faulty brake disc(s) causing the vibration.l would have thought mot would have found defective suspension components

Does it happen under light braking but disappear when braking hard?

The steering vibration is consistent during both

It could be that the discs are not sitting flat on the hubs. Or something is worn. Did you have any advisories on the MoT?

Perhaps the discs were disturbed when the wheels were removed/replaced?No advisories.Just looked at June posting on similar fault, wheel bearings suggested as cause?

Warped discs are common. Replace them both on the front. If it continues blame driveshafts, could be bolts vibrated loose. Does it clunk when engaging the clutch in any gear, mainly first and second?.

If so, driveshafts.

I would say warped discs are not common at all. A build up of crap on the disc surface is, and this can be removed by some enthusiastic braking. This has worked for me numerous times over the last 10 years.

A bug lump of cast iron that is designed to disapate heat is not going to warp under normal driving conditions.

Worn front silentblocks, one or both.

99% both imho....it's easy to check with a crowbar.

Taken to garage today. They thought discs/pads not changed at same time.Service record shows they were at 75,896 now 114,000.After changing discs/pads they will look into the cause of the knocking.

You don't need to change the discs when you do the pads. Only if they are sufficiently worn.

Correct by saying not common but it is the most common cause of wheel wobble when braking. A big lump of cast and cnc machined straight iron (i believe low carbon steel) is VERY likely to warp under heat and pressure.

If you have rust buildup on your brake discs, especially overnight, you need to change them. If the discs have a lip on the outer edge they need changing.
