German car probe finds elevated diesel pollutants  Andy Sharman in London

The German motoring watchdog is in talks with several carmakers over “elevated” levels of diesel pollutants uncovered in vehicle road tests following the Volkswagen emissions scandal.    The KBA, Germany’s federal motor transport authority, on Wednesday named for the first time the 16 carmakers whose models it has been scrutinising, including leading German marques such as Daimler and BMW, as well as Ford and General Motors’ Opel. Cars made by VW’s own brand — plus those of its Audi and Porsche subsidiaries — are also being tested.  A spokesman for the KBA declined to say which carmakers it was in talks with or which specific models were affected, and the regulator added there was no suggestion that an illegal defeat device had been used. VW has admitted up to 11m diesel vehicles were fitted with this software-based device, which serves to understate emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides in laboratory tests.  The KBA’s findings seem to echo the conclusions of various campaign groups, which have long argued that cars emit far more carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the real world than in outdated European laboratory tests.  But the revelations come with the motor industry still under fierce scrutiny from governments and regulators worldwide, two months after a US environmental watchdog first exposed VW’s cheating in emissions tests. The KBA, which monitors the work of test centres in Europe’s biggest car market, has been re-evaluating vehicles’ emissions since the end of September in laboratory conditions and on the road.   It said it was looking at more than 50 models, partly chosen based on popularity, but also following “hints” from third parties about conspicuous pollutant emissions. “Based on raw data, partly increased nitrogen oxides levels in different driving and environmental conditions have been identified so far,” said the watchdog in a statement.  After talks with the carmakers, the KBA plans to evaluate the data further. Only then would the agency have sufficient grounds for any legal action, it said.

The German carmaker is engulfed in the worst scandal in its 78-year history after it admitted to manipulating emissions test data on its diesel vehicles in the US and Europe

Ford said it had so far received no official request for information from the KBA related to its latest announcement. Opel said it was in regular contact with the KBA but declined to comment further.  Daimler said it had been “informed about the investigation by the KBA and are supporting this”, adding: “We have nothing to hide.” BMW said it “does not rig any emissions tests. We observe the legal requirements in each country ... we expect that our vehicles comply with the testing requirements of the current KBA testing”.  VW declined to comment.  It is well-known that carmakers use legal techniques to achieve optimised emissions readings in laboratory tests.  But analysts said investigations such as the KBA probe increased the likelihood of another manufacturer being caught up in the emissions scandal.  “Every manufacturer has now officially denied the use of illegal software on diesel vehicles,” said Dominic O’Brien, analyst at Exane BNP Paribas. “But I would compare it to the debate over tax avoidance versus tax evasion.  “In the cold light of day, any ‘gaming’ technique will not look good, but it will not necessarily be illegal.”   The investigations also make it more likely that European policymakers will press ahead with plans to introduce on the road testing for emissions of nitrogen oxides from 2017.

What car are you talking about and what MPG were you getting previously?

Golf 1.6 tdi previously 68+ mpg , now 56+ mpg ?

A US gallon is less than 4 litres.

50 mpg US is about 58 mpg UK

Golf 1.6 tdi previously 68+ mpg , now 56+ mpg ?

Ah, OK, I thought you said it was indicating just 10 MPG now!

To try and change this link into an easier basis for analysis:

Affected Volkswagen Group models of the current model year have been identified.

The Volkswagen Group reports that the vehicles of the 2016 model year affected by the CO2 issue have been identified. There is thus now clarity about the new vehicles of the current model year out in the marketplace.

The internal investigations into the current vehicles of the 2016 model year provide results for narrowing down the actually affected vehicles with implausible CO2 figures.

Quite what this means for older vehicles is not clear from the VW announcement. There is mention of the Mk. III Fabia but not of the Mk. II. Perhaps VW got more creative with MPG (and CO2) figures than ALL manufacturers have been for years?

re post #60,

"Perhaps",

Is there some doubt vxh26?

http://autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/92893/vw-emissions-scandal-recalls-compensation-is-your-car-affected

Is it not that the Mk2 Fabia from 2007 & Euro 5 Facelift @ 2010 had the EU Testing and Co2 / MPG Results from Testing as it was meant to be done

and without 'Irregularities',  & the Co2 Certification was correct for this type of EU Testing & hence the VED Bands.

(Sometimes a little higher by one Band when it is a Skoda or Seat compared to the Official Figures for a VW / Audi with the same Engine/Gearbox, Engine Management etc.)

http://skoda.co.uk/pages/fuel-consumption-statement.aspx

EDIT, it was temporarily down,

but then Skoda & the Volkswagen Group have a bit of Updating to do with IT, Websites and much more

now that they are becoming 'Trustworthy & Honest' and looking at previous Oversights, Misinformation

& 'Irregularities' that they never knew had happened until they did 'Internal Investigations'!!.

I would say there is certainly a lack of clarity.

Your linked article says "Over half of the 800,000 cars found with false mpg and CO2 figures have been identified as 2016 models through VW’s internal investigation. The 430,000 vehicles contain models from Audi, SEAT, Skoda and Volkswagen."

It seems reasonable to speculate that the remaining 370,000 vehicles are NOT current models? I wonder why VW & Auto Express are happy to gloss over these vehicles? Perhaps because they don't affect future new car sales?

'Lost in Translation'  like i keep saying to you.

Muddy the waters and confuse.

Keep saying 'VW'  & not 'the Volkswagen Group',  & try to be a bit silent as much as possible on it being also Audi, Seat & Skoda.

Current Models that are Euro 6, not actually just 2016 Models, but vehicles already built and First Registered and on the roads

having been sold after testing and Certification to meet Euro 6 Emissions before late 2015, and currently the Volkswagen Group Range of models.

* Many of the vehicles involved are owned currently by the Volkswagen Group and Leased via their Finance Companies

or the Lease Company that Volkswagen sold it's share of only this year before the 'Emissions Scandal'

on Defeat Devices was exposed. Many are owned by other Lease Companies and ultimately by the Banks.*

Spin and confuse in 'Press Releases',  and stories from 'People close to Volkswagen',

and then leave the favoured Journal, Editors, & Journalists to continue the confusion on your behalf.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.

Truth in Technology.

As you say, lost in translation and confused attribution helping to muddy the waters:

"Vorsprung durch Technik" actually means "Advancement through technology" and is the advertising slogan used by Audi, not by VW.

This VW Euro 6 1.0 TSI Engine in the video with many claims on improved fuel economy is one of the engines on the

list of engines with possible 'Irregularities' in the EU test results for Co2 / mpg & the Certification.

?

Has anyone any experience of the 3 cylinder 1.0 TSI / TFSI, and is real world fuel economy any good with one.?

Diesel only; apparently on the "Petrol" models the MPG figures are of course 100% accurate

Is it not about the Testing & Certification Irregularities' as the VW Group had tests done on certain Euro 6 Engines / vehicles,

and not the EU Testing being Not fit for Purpose?

http://skoda.co.uk/pages/fuel-consumption-statement.aspx

.............................................................................................

Virtually no similarity to test results with EU Testing and driving the cars outside.

But then we knew that, as do the Governments and the Manufacturers.

News / Media articles are appearing today saying that less vehicles are involved than previously believed to be.

Maybe VW Group can just make a clear 'Press Release'  setting out which Cars / Engines,

and how many,

instead of 'Insiders' or 'those close' to VW leaking with permission the information.

Spinning numbers by saying 'Per year' etc,

Just give the numbers of cars produced and sold and registered and with owners that are on the roads in

Europe or RoW.

EDIT. My bad.

I see there is an announcement,

a there is a post in the Emissions Scandal V2 thread with it.

?

Could someone maybe link it here please.  cheers.

VW Shares jump.   Surprise surprise.

Tomorrow we might hear who they have discovered was behind the 'Defeat Devices' & the NoX Cheating in Euro 5 Diesels,

a totally different mater from the Co2 Irregularities with Euro 6 engines..

http://bbc.co.uk/news/business-35051469

Anyone heard if the 1.4 tsi ACT (150) engine is involved in this kerfuffle?

Doubt the gov will let the CO2 emissions slide regarding road tax!

The list of 9 VW Engines are in other posts on the forum.

and not the 1.4 TSI ACT Petrol on the list.

EDIT.

Doh sorry.

the Passat 110kw 1.4TSI ACT Blue Motion Tech 6 speed manual is on the list.

The List shows what VW said, and Shows 9 VW Models, by the Vehicle and engine / gearbox.

not any Skoda, Seat or Audi with the same engines, but then the different vehicles had different Co2 figures.
