Tesla autopilot

Featured Replies

I'm sure you guys have read about this. How Tesla cars can literally drive themselves. My question is, with the lane assist, ACC, front assist how close could the Octavia drive itself?

At least with the Octavia it forces you to keep your hands on the wheel (but could you turn that off?!)

Mine drives itself quite well  :D ,

The ability with the ACC to set the distance from other traffic works well and I like the fact that it accelerates when you indicate to move lanes. As long as it is not set too close to traffic in front and you make sure you are not closer than that to the traffic in the next lane when you pull out it is quite fluid. To make the most of it you need DSG as they do work very well together

The lane assist seems to do a bit of "bouncing" between the white lines initially going round a bend then settles down (just at the point it prompts you to take the wheel) small tug on the wheel and you get another 15 seconds!

While I think the ACC is very good and use it a lot, impressive though it is the lane assist is more of a toy and it is not there yet. I certainly wouldn't code out the time limit, 15 seconds is more than enough for what it is meant to do

Despite that, even as it stands, the lane assist would keep you safe if you had a heart attack at speed. It certainly has its limits now but you would not get the carnage of an artic ploughing across six lanes of motorway after the driver has a heart attack/ stroke/ falls asleep if it was fitted even at this level.

If nothing else it has made me more regimented at indicating as you get a bit of a "fight" if you try to cross white lines without indicating. No bad thing really, and as above even the ACC takes cues from the indicator.

If the road was empty I would say it is close but they never are and factor in what others do on the road we are many years away from mainstream cars coping with that.

Still makes me smile when it works well though

Tesla have had to push another update to the cars counter the stupidity of some drivers, including ensuring the driver stays in the vehicle while auto pilot is active :|

There are some vids on Utube of idiots in the US nearly crashing their cars whilst testing the limits on the self-drive ability, lost the link for now

Yeah that's the problem.. I reckon by the time I can afford a Tesla, they will have taken auto pilot away because of idiots trying to let the car drive itself up a slip road (which it's not designed to do anyway)

Oh yay......America ruining the motoring world for us all again!!

As for the octavia. Mine hasn't got ACC but lane assistance, if I'm to be honest even though I think it's clever and very cool, I also dislike it. The feel of it when you're driving is something I'm not a fan of.

ACC is enough self driving for me.

Having had some false positive warnings with Front assist, I'm not entirely happy with this, plus I do wish it also worked at slower town driving speeds I.e. traffic so it could totally prevent you rear ending someone in slow moving traffic.

Plus who would buy the more fun to drive cars if they were self driving?! I bet they wouldn't be fun to ride as they are fun to drive (after the excitement of self driving has worn off).

My two pence worth is that probably most of the required sensors and actuators are there in an Octavia that has the above toys plus park assist. The rest is just software.

@Iamholam you're a techie, maybe you can pull something together one weekend? ;-)

Haha my thoughts were pretty low tech, like putting a weight on the steering wheel to make it think there was someone holding it!

And already messing with the car with vcds, there is no way I would be changing the safety systems! I'll leave that to the experts ☺

Experts... What, you mean the ones that were busy writing the defeat device software [emoji12] .

Maybe if they spent more time on "auto pilot" instead of cheating the system we would have it already!

Kryten Robert Llewellyn has done a review with someone from Tesla driving. It was quite odd watching it pull out for an overtake after just indicating right.
