How do YOU drive in fog?

Featured Replies

It's a simple but to me complex question

Maintain speed?

Slow down to a speed at which you can stop if necessary? (is that dangerous also?)

Follow the truck/vehicle in front?

Pull over into the breakdown lane and stop?

Take the first exit?

I've never been forced to make that decision but it's my private nightmare.

  • There - corrected it for you...

  • Most people in this world don't think for themselves because nobody told them to. For that reason, I look after number one rather than doing the same as everyone else.

  • Front fog lights are about as much use as a candle in fog. They are just a cosmetic accessory so people think they are more important than the person with the lower spec car.   Simple.   Well....

Pull over into the breakdown lane and stop?

Have you taken a driving test ? and passed

You should try it then...daddy

Then enlighten all of us with your wisdom ......we don't have a fog problem such that Europe has.

You may not have noticed, but it was multiple choice.

Ensure my normal lights are ON!

Drive at a speed that allows me to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front whilst maintaining good visibility of what's up ahead.

If really bad put my rear fog light on.

That sounds perfectly reasonable and rational but in thick fog would be close to tailgating wouldn't it?

Or, is fog never that thick these days.....we rarely get serious fog.

Stop at each set of traffic lights - get out - try and figure out which colour is showing.  Wait for green - get back in and proceed.

Dipped on (they're never turned off anyway). If I'm the lead car of a column, front fogs on to be more visible to oncoming traffic. If I'm the last, rear fogs too, so someone coming up behind has a better chance of seeing me.

If its medium to quite bad, I stay far back behind the car infront so I can only just see their taillights. Most of the time the speed will reduce as visibility does so this works quite well. If they disappear off at a speed faster than I want to do, well, thats how I become the lead car.

The biggest nightmare is dealing with the utter complete morons who will not put lights on because its not night and they can still see things around them, being so retardedly braindead they do not realise most of the lights on your car are so others can see you better.

I have the fear that I might get rear-ended by someone not slowing enough.

I have been in it that bad that as soon as I got out the car and shut the door I could no longer see the car. And I was in the bright red one.

Huskoda nailed it on the head

Utter morons who drive on sidelights or none at all

It should be an offence, like using a mobile or speeding...You can argue that its 'Driving without due care and attention' !!

I wonder about entering the fog and not being close enough to see the vehicle in front and feeling somewhat exposed to a surprise.

What makes it worse Chris is the Kn0b heads that don't use Fog lights/dipped lights when it's foggy have them on the next day when the fogs gone or it's a bit cloudy

Can we have a separate thread called "i don't need fog lights because im so awesome"

Make sure you are your own side of the road, especially after a series of bends.

  1. LIGHTS ON - Yes I know that's bold & caps but it's that important (for advanced users you may select fog lights if visibility is under 100m, and may choose to use full beam headlights for better penetration (oooh er missis) in daylight).

If you have front fogs and visibility is under 100m and it's night time, you may switch headlights off to reduce how much you dazzle yourself with the reflection of your own headlights.

Drive at a speed suitable to how thick the fog is. I've been as low as 10mph in "freezing fog".

DO NOT switch off your rear fog(s) if being followed; advanced users will be maintaining a distance such that they can only just see your rear fog and hence will see your brake lights, but can not see your tail lights.

Note that traffic lights will look "funny colours" when seen through fog.

CAREFULLY......

It is, under regulation 25 of the RVLR: "...no person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle which is fitted with obligatory dipped-beam headlamps unless every such lamp is kept lit...in seriously reduced visibility."

You need to be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear. If you can't do that, you need to slow down.

I was doing this on the M1 once, when no one else was, so I removed myself from the situation and pulled in at the next services.

I got talking to a couple of highways agency officers and they said they knew something bad was going to happen. About 10 minutes later it did. I wasn't in it because I was sat safe drinking coffee.

^^^^ actually that's what I'm interested in......does EVERYONE slow down or do some fear that is just as dangerous and fear being rear-ended by an HGV?.

For that reason, I look after number one rather than doing the same as everyone else.

Maybe because the 'options' list didn't include common sense......just maybe?

Also agree with Huskoda.

Ill never go faster than i can see its safe to stop. Not just in fog, but anytime. Ive followed soo many bikers that are willing to go balls out around a blind bend. Whats there? I dno. He doesnt either...

Sheep are well disguised in fog. Almost exactly the same colour, and often in the road around here.
