Thefts from Transits

Featured Replies

For any members with Transits, just got this from the local Police:

Please pass this message to any members of friends who drive vans and particularly Ford Transit vans.

There have been a large number of thefts of power tools from tradesmen's vans, these have been particularly Ford Transit vans where there has been no forced entry but the owners are adamant that their vehicles were locked and secure. It is likely that a device freely available to purchase over the internet has been used to gain entry. The police advice to van owners is to be aware of this and to consider   either fitting additional security locks to all doors (Remote deadlocking kits can be fitted which means that the doors will not open without the remote) or to empty the van of valuable items and to place "Don't Bother" signs, which are available either from the police or NHW, on the vehicle which advises that the vehicle has been emptied of all valuables.

There have been a number of police reports of this happening in the vicinity of where I live in Cambridgeshire.

There was a spate of ford focus's (foci?) Broken into without breaking... a couple of yrs back. Probably the same sort of method - no sign of forced entry but stuff gone..

Transits again, seems to happen with each incarnation then ford decide to fix the problem.

I like the stickers on the back of vans that state

'THIS VAN IS EMPTIED OF ALL TOOLS EACH NIGHT'  then you look at the wheels buried in the arches

If the scrotes cant get in they'll nick the catalyst.

Been loads around here lately.

A 2011 transit sport 140 got nicked the other week from right outside he guys house. Full of tools too.

Had to get into a Ford Transit last week the rear door lock and the side door lock had packed up. I broke into it so I could fix it for the customer. Surprisingly easy I was in after less than 15 minutes and that was in front of the customer so I was being diplomatic. Take your tools out.

Not wise to post on an open forum...

Had a Peugeot work van and those locks were fitted from the outside.

Came out twice to find the lock on the floor with no damage. Just refitted again after the police had been.

The thing is, Ford Transits will always be the one they figure out first because of the number of them out there.

Always fit a decent padlock. It doesn't have to look rough if you spend the money.

How come you never see this on Vans which say " Horses in Transit "

For some reason there seems to be a flaw in every lock they put on Transits.

Either they're not testing them properly, consider it the drivers problem or they don't care.

TBH normal cars and vans aren't really secure anyway. If you really want to get in you will. Best locks in the world won't stop someone that is prepared to stick a brick through the window or use a grinder to cut a hole in the side panel.

Yep once you know there weak point. My friend has a tool for Vag barrels he can open any in under 5 minutes with no damage. To be fair I can open them in 5 minutes with damage.

We have had a few peugeot vans in at work lately that customers complianing there key won't turn any of the outer locks but the ignitions fine,

Think the current counts 4, there doesn't look any damage but as people say they use better stuff than jamming a screwdriver in lock these days

For any member owning an early model ( circa 51 plate), there was a mod brought out by Ford circa 04, as thieves had found out how to circumvent the central locking on these, and open the doors without damaging the locks . I won't say how it was done, but interfering with the locks was not involved.

Another point to be aware of when working near places where a Hiab/ other remote controlled device is in use ,is that the remote used with these is that powerful that it makes any remote useless, and doors DO NOT LOCK.

Throwing this in but I've never understood locking fuel filler caps, just a screwdriver and a smash then the ****ers fall apart. Useless especially with invention of anti siphon valves

sayin' nowt about how crappy the locks are on OR 'Tonners' :x

Haha, yeah, a mate has the back off one for a shed. I broke into it by accident, thought the handle was sticking, turns out it was locked.

Ford brought out a modification in 2004 for a 2011 model Transit?

Those boys in Dagenham certainly think ahead!

51 was before 04 / 54,  and before 60 /11/ 61

51 was the start of the new system of VRN, 2001.

Lots of transits out there, many people with vans leave tools in them.

So acquire a transit, spend a while working out how to break in without smashing the window, sell tool to thieves, make lots of cash.

Nothing is secure and even if ford made it super secure, thieves would find a way in or resort to battery powered angle grinders.

There was a police report a few years back about car thieves from the UK hiring recently released prestigious Audi's, BMW's and Mercs in Germany, driving them to the UK and basically dismantling then to find ways round the security.

It wouldn't surprise me if they've done something similar for the various models of Transits.

I even sat there, checked with myself and was quite happy that a 51 plate was late 2011.

After being corrected it is obvious it isn't, doh!
