2.0tdi 150ps owners **HELP PLEASE**

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have a really bizarre rattling sound coming from the O/S of my engine - it sounds like the pulleys are loose... I have taken it to the dealer and they've said all is fine and that they've listened to several other 150ps 2 litres for comparison and they all sound exactly the same.... Personally, i'm not convinced.

The sound is more prominent when the engine's cold and on tick over, there's no vibration either...

Anyone else notice anything on their engine?

Many thanks,

Steve. :)

Never heard it before, but is it just normal diesel noise, or something else?

Nothing like that on mine - and it's done nearly 50k miles!

That is reassuring - the garage said they'd compared it to other identical engines and they sounded the same.

This is definitely an additional sound over and above the Massey Ferguson soundtrack...

Gonna try a different garage as I'm convinced it's not right...

Many thanks guys.

Steve. :)

Mine recently had a loose heat shield around the exhaust which was rattling. took the dealer literally 5 minutes to diagnose and fix it. Now all quiet again. Very happy with the service.

Mine had a metallic rattle at about 50k, it was only noticeable at tick over, and if you brought the clutch up ready to move off, it stopped as the revs rise a bit. Anyway, I recorded the sound on my phone, took it to the dealer and they offered to change the DMF under warranty. I was not convinced, but let them go ahead, anyway, another 13k later and the rattle is back, but intermittent so I suspect it was not a DMF issue after all. To me it sounded like a loose under tray or heat shield, so will be interested what the dealer says when it goes in for next service, due at 67k. Thankfully I paid for an 80k warranty!

I've also heard about an AC / brake pipe rattle where pipes head up through the engine bay at the back and a rubber plug has worked loose.  Apparently an easy fix if you can get underneath and spot it.

I've always thought our 150 scout sounds louder/rattlier at tick over than my diesel vRS - as the wife drives it, i've not paid much attention to it, but it might run them together to see

I did a comparison test with my brother in laws 65plate scout 184dsg (same as the vRS diesel), the sound was not present on his car, I took videos of both and showed the dealer - try said as its a different spec engine it wasn't a fair test, and that the 'noise/rattle' was present on several other 150ps diesels they listened to....

I will take another video this morning and post it for you to compare to....

I'm adamant something is not right - hopefully not the DMF, as the sound is present regardless of clutch or use of A/C....

Our 150 TDI with 29k miles is noisier than it was when new....definitely at idle when not warm the belts make little squeeking noises which seem rather at odds with the fact its a new modern car but my few week old GTD does this now too (seems associated with the colder weather) so no major concerns.

My 150 also is reluctant to start on occasions...never doesnt but does seem to labour occasionally....its been looked at twice when its gone in for servicing at two different dealers and they have both said no problem. The Golf has also started doing it too but not quite as severely.......

Ive also noticed my Golf sounds quite tappety of a morning too but put that down to either lubrication (once warm it doesnt do it) or perhaps the injectors being a bit noisy on cold start (as it has bigger injectors).

Id keep an eye on it for sure but these engines do seem to have certain "characteristics" which are a little at odds with a seemingly state of the art diesel engine....if the dealer says its OK I wouldnt be too concerned.....for sure if something fails at least you'll now have some comeback on the dealer for saying as such.

Just took a quick video clip - quality is not the best, but the noise is definitely present.

It's more of an intermittent rattle - noticeable when phone is under the engine....

Steve.

The rattle on mine is more noticeable from inside the car with the windows closed and is most noticeable as the revs drop below 1000 when coasting to a halt in traffic, if you stop completely the revs drop further to about 750-800 and that is when it rattles the worst.

Update on this!

After another12 months of this noise it was services again (only covered 19k).

It turns out the cambelt tensioner was goosed and consequently so was the. Let.

Luckily it wasdiagnosed when it was before it snapped and blew the engine!

Steve :)

I am trying to listen to your video but I am not sure what would one need to hear from all the sounds.. how did you hear that anyway?

It's unfortunately a noisy engine...good for its output, but very agricultural
