12V socket is ALWAYS on? Skoda Fabia II

Featured Replies

Hey!

See the car I've got at the side

Basically, what I want to do is:

• Wire up two Mobius cameras (one rear, one front)
• Replace the Skoda stereo for an aftermarket stereo

However I've also noticed that the 12V socket is always live, even when ignition is off?

Before I go about getting these two things in my car, could someone please advise on how I would remedy this?

BTW, even if it wouldn't cause sufficient drain on my battery to be a real issue, I'd rather not record the work car park for several hours or my home driveway for several hours. It seems a bit pointless, especially at work!

I've setup something using :- "SPLIT CHARGE RELAY PCT VOLTON ZR1220" - works a treat

Sorry, but what does that even do?

All I see is this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SPLIT-CHARGE-RELAY-PCT-VOLTON-ZR1220-/250859364687

Which doesn't give me much information tbh! Also, where would I connect it to? I do intend to hardwire two cameras in to the car, along with a stereo

For the cameras I would suggest routing the cables to your fuse box and using a fuse piggyback connector to get power from an existing switched fuse.

As for the radio, you can use the existing connector with a suitable converter for your aftermarket unit.

You don't have to bother with the cig socket (which is always on).

Would I need two of these then?

As I intend to hardwire the two cameras

and sorry to be dumb, but what exactly is a "suitable converter" ? I intend to get this:

And this:

The input is from a permanently live power source (12v socket or hardwired) the output only turns on when car is above a certain voltage. As default for me this was only when the engine was running. Myself I have wired a 12v plug to the input and a 12v socket to the output

Ooh another question I have is:

I intend to ALWAYS have on the following (when Im in the car)

  • Dual dash cams
  • Car stereo

I drive up north maybe once/month or so, and I also need to connect up the following:

  • TomTom Go 6000
  • Mobile phone
  • Possibly two mobile phones for charging

Would the current battery be OK? Or should I get something beefier?

Would it not worth doing that instead? ie: wiriting 12V plug to the input and a 12V plug to the output) It wouldn't be me who'd be doing this. I'd just be buying the kit, and giving it to a garage to install all of it

Also, I've got another question above, if you know that one? Thanks :)

Camera part:

Two or four, it depends on your camera. Some cameras have two 12V inputs, one switched and one permanent. Some have only one. Check the specs for your cameras.

Radio part:

It depends on what connectors your car has. The aftermarket you want to buy has an ISO input for power and a DIN input for the aerial. The 2011 Fabia should have a quadlock and a fakra, so you probably need an ISO/DIN to Quadlock/FAKRA converter. Like this one for example: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-Quadlock-Car-Stereo-ISO-Wiring-Harness-Lead-Fakra-aerial-Adaptor-/351139461174?hash=item51c18af836:g:NKkAAOxyXDhSkzDN

You have to take out the old radio and check the connections to be sure.

How about:-

Only 5 amps - but should be OK for your stuff

Skodanooob, I wouldn't worry about the socket being permanently live, just use it for tomtom's and phone chargers. If you need both then grab a 12v multiway adaptor. When you're done unplug and hide them to make your car less tempting to thieves. No need for anything more complicated...

Next problem, the cameras.

These will need a switched live feed to turn them on/off with the ignition. A decent auto-electrician will probably take a new feed from the fusebox with either a piggyback fuse or even a crimp into an unused socket for a factory finish. As mentioned, some cameras will also need a permanently live feed and the same method applies. You really shouldn't need to supply any parts apart from the cameras as the auto-electrician should have everything else in stock. The biggest part of this is routing the cables to the rear camera, the front should be easy.

Final problem, the headunit.

I'm not sure about the 2011 Fabia but I believe it has a double din radio as standard that's controlled via canbus. To fit the single din headunit you linked to, you will probably need the headunit, a wiring loom adaptor and a new facia. For the wiring loom adaptor you have two choices, an expensive one which has a canbus adaptor or an inexpensive one that connects to the switched live feed taken for the cameras previously. You can then choose an appropriate facia for the headunit.

To give you ideas on prices for the wiring loom adaptor and facias take a look here: http://www.npautoparts.co.uk/car-audio-c188/fitting-accessories-c300#t8469:t8623:t8625

One thing to be aware of. As you also linked to a microphone I assume you want to use bluetooth for phone calls. If so, that headunit needs an extra module (http://www.amazon.co.uk/JVC-KS-BTA100-Bluetooth-Handsfree-Recievers/dp/B004REMUJE) and the microphone you linked to support this. Your auto-electrician might be able to suggest some better alternatives that are an all-in-one solution and probably even give you a chance to play with it before you commit to fitting.

According to Paul Townsend's review, that doesn't cut out the supply 'til the input voltage is 11.6V. That seems very low to me. Like dead flat low?

Possibly - I've never tried this unit myself.

Mine is the Volton unit mentioned above that cuts out a couple of seconds after the engine is turned off  with my coolbox connected. You also have a small pot to adjust the threshold if required - mine is as delivered

On some later VAG cars the 12v sockets are turned off a little while after turning engine off anyway (e.g. Latest Golf , not sure about latest Skodas?)

sorry, I mean with the engine on, and me driving

Would the converter not be a "standard" thing that a garage can install?

I also intend to get two of these:

I understand that I need the fascia, but those wiring loom adaptors all look "standard" Wouldnt the garage have some, no?

Thanks. Good shout on the bluetooth extra! Forgot about that!!

Not bad! Bluetooth and DAB+ aerial built in!

If it's a car audio place, then I would expect them to have some kind of wiring loom adaptor that should work. If it's a more generic garage for servicing/repairs then they probably won't.

Even with the double din headunit you'll still need a facia as aftermarket headunits are square but the OEM ones have rounded corners :)

It was the first site I found to show some examples, any other supplier is fine :)

You will only need one wiring loom/ISO kit, they are the same thing.

There are also full fitting kits that have both the wiring and facia http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181400964779 you can see the red/orange wires that will need to be connected to switched/permanent ground.

Can't comment on the headunit itself, as halfords have them it might be worth having a look at one in the flesh if you can.

Ahh cool.

Didnt know that. Theyre also considerably more pricey!!! I'll just have to get someone to fit this all now! I'll have to do that. The reviews on Amazon say "It can be a bit dark to see" but tbh, I'm not mega fussed about that, especially if Im driving!

So... to recap, I need:

Stereo: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351378361282

Double DIN kit: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181400964779

That's it? For the stereo?

And thanks. Shall do

Should be, when the shop fits it for you they will need to find a switched live - they should have everything required to do so and if they don't find a better shop ;)

Careful, this one is different from the JVC you mentioned earlier and does not seem to have an ISO connector, but something else. See http://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/dab/DPX406DAB/?view=details

Unless the seller provides an ISO adapter, you should ask him. Maybe he can provide the correct adapter for your car.

I have had 3 stereos now from car audio direct, they have a first rate help desk that you can call which is very knowledgeable. Simply ask them what is included in the box before you buy, they saved me over £15 by telling me in advance what was there.

Their aftersales is first rate too if you are unlucky enough to have a problem with a unit.

Thanks! I'll do that now!!

AFter I get this, I guess I can tackle the whole dash cam thing too!
