Probably a thick question / topic

Featured Replies

My VRS was registered on 21 June 2013. I bought it about 6-8 weeks ago. It has 18,500 miles on the clock and last night, as I was setting off to work it came up with 'service due in 20 days' (yes that's Christmas day). The car has had its 'multi point check' by Evens Halshaw but I'm not sure what this consists of - Google isn't being my friend this morning.

Anyway if the car was registered in June and the service should be a 10k or 12 month thing, why would my car be asking for its service to be due on Christmas Day? Surely the guy who had it last - army lad, car was registered to a barracks, wouldn't of serviced it on Christmas Day!!

Should I get it serviced asap, which is a massive inconvenience for me as I go to Miami on next week to attend a wedding. Or should I wait for the 10k or 12 months thing?

Any advice on this would be great!!

Dave

I think the major question is "When was it last serviced?" Is it on fixed or variable servicing?

If you dont know when the oil was last changed, its probably best to get it done, along with the filters and what not.

Atleast then you know its done and can keep ontop of servicing it from here on in.

When you reset the Service indicator on a CAVE Engine vRS or other fixed Service Fabia, it shows.

'9,400 miles / 372 days' until the next service.  A Year and a week.

Not 10,000 miles / 365 days.

A Car on 'Variable Servicing'  (Flexible.) has a different 'Showing' all together.

...............

If the car had a Minor or Major Service and is on Variable Servicing that would be involving an Oil

& Filter Change as a Minimum.

& that should be Oil to VW 504 00,  which is 5w 30 Full Synthetic Long Life.

Have the Dealership Workshop reset the Service Interval if they used the Correct oil and serviced the car

on Variable servicing.

If you can not do it yourself.

?

Do you have a print out from the Service showing what parts / Oil-Filter were used.?

Edited by GoneOffskiroottoot

Ah.........

Just noticed, 'Multipoint check' by Evens Halshaw.

So no mention of the car being Serviced or having Oil & Filter changed.

Best check at a Skoda Dealership or Skoda Customer Services what Service History is on the Skoda System to keep up the Manufacturers Warranty,

by following the Manufacturers Service Schedule / Guidelines.

Skoda Approved Used cars also get a Full Workshop Check by trained technicians,

but that does not mean they get Serviced if a service is not due.

The car isn't going to spontaneously blow up if you leave the service for an extra month you know. It just isn't. Get it done mid to end of January.

No.

But if for any reason there is need for a Warranty Claim under the Manufacturers Warranty the T&C's are there with Exclusions.

So following the Manufacturers Service Schedule / Guidelines are in there.

If the car is on Variable or Fixed Servicing there is some give and take by Date and Mileage,

but that stretches to a short period of time.

A month might well be fine.

Worth checking now what Servicing the Engine / Car had had up to the 18,500 miles and 18-19 months if any,

and is any Servicing or warranty work carried out on the Skoda / VW Computer System.

Also are there any outstanding Service Campaign field actions like with the DSG.

Thanks for all the replies people. I'm currently in the process of moving in with the woman at the moment - you lot are the first to know about this other than out mum's and her dad ha!

Variable service? Please assume that I know little about this type of thing. It's definitely got something in the service book but that's at my mums, so ill check that out let you know what it says and then fill you in with the details.

I really appreciate the help here.

Just looking at my service book:

Stamped on 17/12/14 by simpsons skoda, Colne. At 10789 miles. All the boxes on the left ticked yes or no. 'Next inspection' 20789 or 17/12/15

Stamped again on 7/10/15 by Evans Halshaw Burnley (where I bought the car)at 17,281 miles. The box on the left has no ticks on any of the boxes. 'Next inspection' not filled in either.

Workshop entries.

Car was recalled on 18/12/14 for gearbox oil. 'Recall 34FY' completed by Simpsons Skoda Burnley.

Note left in the owners manual on the oil spec page 'OIL 5W-30 CASTROL EDGE VW504 00

I tried to put pictures on but it's not having any of it.

It looks like the car was put on a Fixed / Annual Service.

So that is the Next Inspection for that.

December 2015.

(Maybe the previous Owner Bought a 3 Year SErvice Plan for Annual Servicing,

call Simpson Skoda and see if the car is Entitled to another 1 or 2 Services at no cost to you at a Skoda Dealership.)

With Long Life Oil you do not need it changed it at 9,400 miles,  it can be good up to 18,500 miles or so,

but you are as well changing at 10,000 or so, well IMO.

As to the DSG Service Campaign, is that a Typo from you.

This is only 06/12/15  Was it *2014* ?

There is a Sticker in the Spare Tyre well when the work is done.

As to the Evans Halshaw Inspection / check or whatever, even if they serviced it,

unless it is on the Skoda / VW Dealership System you are as well to ignore that,

Just get a Service Done when you want in January, or now in December.

2 Year Service is basically an Inspection Service, Fluids, and all the other bits and pieces,

Bodywork Inspected and Notes made, as well as other items, and Pollen Filter Replaced.

Yeah it was a typo, rectified. I'll make some calls in the morning to Skoda and find out what's what. It's definitely going to have to be January as I have no time next week, and going on holiday the week after then it's Christmas and then the New Year which I'm working loads I just need the car. I wasn't expecting the service to be due for another 1500k because of the 'Halshaw service', which is a little misleading.

I really appreciate the time you have taken, as well as everyone else has to reply. Forums like this are a massive help with knowledge etc.

Dave

this is what variable servicing is : the cars ECU monitors how it is used, how warm the oil gets long/short journeys etc , and decides when it needs servicing (within certain perameters) I believe mine may go to 17,000 miles this time ;) I do change the oil every 10k during track season, as it has a hard life, but I'm leaving it over winter until it tells me to service it ;)

Went to Simpsons Skoda in Colne today - by the way they were very good on customer service level. Kinda wish I got my car from them, even though I paid much less than the other Fabias that they had there.

Anyway, Evans Halshaw haven't serviced the car, even though they have stamped the book but can't explain why they have stamped it.

I've booked it in for January at a cost of £199 discounted price if I take out their 'fixed price service' which includes 2017,18 & 19 or 30000, 40000 & 50000 services and it's MOT in 2018. For a cost at £17.60 per month. Is it worth taking that fixed price out with them then?

It sounds rather expensive really, up to you, but i would give the Service Plan a miss.

& January for what they might call a 'Major Service @ £259' but discounted its still expensive.

It is an Oil, Filter, Sump Plug and Pollen Filter, a check fluids, (Charge for and supply Washer Fluid,)

Visual Inspections, report, maybe a Road Test maybe not.

It should go on the Diagnostics and any Software Update done.

Price it maybe at a VW Main Dealer and see what they will do the service for.

Maybe best to get the 4 Spark Plugs changed.

Ask the Skoda Dealer & the VW Dealer how much that would be at the time of the service.

?

Did you get a 12 Month Used car Warranty from Evan Halshaw?

If not i would buy a Used Car Warranty from Skoda UK for 12 months when the Original Manufacturers Warranty Expires,

and then annually, just follow the Servicing Schedule / Guidelines,

(maybe change spark plugs every 20,000 miles, not at 40,000)

I'll price up a VW service and see what that comes out at then.

I usually take my cars to Stage 3 Tuning for a services and MOTs because I trust Chris who owns that place. I got 12 months warranty from Evans Halshaw yes, so I have warranty until the end of October next year with them.

Does it matter if I chose boy to go though Skoda or VW? I plan on keeping this car for the next 4 years minimum you see.

You say it's expensive is the deal and I 100% trust your comments as you know what you are talking about.

What would you do, if you were in my shoes on this service?

Dave

I would go into a VW Main dealership,

Sit at the Service Reception and ask about the price of a Service for your car.

The person will look up the Reg Number and see what car it is, and ask the mileage.

Tell you what service is due hopefully.

If you ask if they will also change the spark plugs at the service it will hopefully be a better price (lower) than the Skoda Main Dealer quotes.

It usually is.

Job will be done correctly, and Service Schedule met, Warranty valid.

*When the Service Desk person says the Spark Plugs are not due to be Replaced or even checked,

just tell them you would like them changed please, and can they say how much that will be,

if they argue you ask them to go get someone that knows why you want them changed.*

Or go with the Skoda Main dealer if that suits you.

Just spoke to my closest VW which is in Blackburn. They've told me that they can't do the service and it will need to be done directly at Skoda; he advised me to go to the one in Colne where I went yesterday.

Who ever you spoke to is likely talking out their ar5e.  I think they might get in a bit of bother.

?

Do you want to say what VW Dealership that was you called?

Reason being the Engine and drivetrain is identical to a 2011-2014 VW Polo GTI 1.4 TSI Twincharger.

There is a Volkswagen Group Servicing Schedule and Computer System.

EU Open market, so if the VW Dealership has a agreement with Skoda DEalership not to service Skodas, that is illegal.

If the VW Dealership Management do not want to service other Volkswagen Group Vehicles then that is a

rather unusual position to take.

http://volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing

http://volkswagen.co.uk/owners/price-match

Any Official Seat, Skoda or Audi Maindealer will use Volkswagen Parts to Service your Vehicle,

so Remember to get a 'Written Quote' if they offer it at less than the VW Dealership and they are within 5 miles.

'Price Match'!

It was Lookers VW Blackburn that I called. They said they'd need to call me back, they did and said that they can not service my car and then directed me to Skoda at Colne.

Very odd.

Where my family and friends need to keep a Warranty Valid our Skoda go to the VW Main dealer to be serviced.

Its not an issue, great price, great service, nice courtesy cars.

Warranty Valid, Updates done, Service and Warranty Work all recorded on the system.

Really odd.

If they cant service that.. How do they manage to service the polo gti twincharger?

Bizarre!

To keep things as straightforward as possible though I've stuck to Skoda dealers - just my opinion (my local VW dealer is Arnold in any event - although he did service my Lupo GTi and I'd no complaints - even went the extra mile to source tyres - Lupo GTi has an oddball tyre size - only Dunlop and Toyo make them).

There are thousands of people in the UK with Euro 5 Engine TDI's that are Affected by the Emissions Scandal and these will need the fix.

Many might be in an Area without a Skoda Dealership and might need to go to a VW, Seat or Audi one,

and the same with other VW Group owners,

people live on Islands, rural areas etc, and often use a VW Group Main Dealer that is not from the same manufacturer.

If VW are going to say that if your car needs 'the fix' done at the same Brand Manufacturer as your car,

it is going to get even more expensive for them to cover peoples costs if it involves travelling further than might be necessary.
