Running older Audis...

Featured Replies

Just out of interest, what are running and maintenence costs on an older (say, 01 - 04) Audi A4 Estate? When I eventually change my Fab for something else I'm wondering about going bigger and I quite like the older A4s, but maintenence costs for Audi are a massive issue for me.

Does it get any more reasonable with age - for example, comparable to a golf of the same age - or not really?

I do think that's a how long is a piece of string question.

I personally think you can run an older Audi on a budget.  Going for a galvanised A4 with a simpler (and more robust) fuelling system, such as a 110bhp AFN would probably serve you in good stead.  But they'll be long in the tooth now and maybe not that easy to find a good 'un.

A mate had an Avant once.  He said never again, but it was lots of silly things rather than anything major, like trying to source a cheap rear window motor that finished him off.

Yeah it'll depend on which one. They'll share a good amount of parts with VW/Seat/Skoda so those bits wont be expensive, there will be some stuff thats a bit more expensive and Audi specific but nothing major. Like buying any used car, it's buying one that isnt a lemon thats the trick.

And buy something that's as common as muck, the more common the car is the more likely you will be to find spares, whether it be new or off scrap cars.

Bloody brilliant little green Clio ;) and in fairness I've never found an issue sourcing parts for 80s, coupes and cabriolets I've worked on
