Meet Humphrey Labradoodle

He's growing. A lot.
Today he has eaten the phone directory, ripped a hole in my t-shirt by being a bit quick with his teeth (one of my faves and the 4th one so far), almost eaten my daughter's dinner from the kitchen bench, squashed the cat with his paw a few times, bounced at my daughter and scratched her leg. And walked really well on the lead and remembered to stop and sit at each road crossing.

Doodles are ace!! I'm not a dog person until a friend got one. 2 weeks later Maddie came to live with us. Lovely dog, naughty as all pups are but such a freundly fun temperament, and very intelligent.

We want to get a labradoodle. We have two young kids under 5, and both work. One full time, and the mrs part time.

We would obviously take time off to look after the pup for a few weeks.

Any advice?

Any recommendations on breeders in the south west of the UK?

Wentwood puppies near Monmouth. I know a few people who gave bought one from them, not cheap (who is) but you'll know the parents, fully vaccinated, tagged, month free insurance. Just change the food asap they use red mills and both our pup and a friends had upset tum which is not funny. Switched to orijen and she's been fine ever since.

I'm in NZ so I have no idea about breeders in the UK , sorry :)

But with breeders generally, talk to them, make sure they're open and seem honest, ask to visit them, meet the parent dogs, ask about history, ask if they are willing to offer a health guarantee.

If they seem shifty or won't let you visit, avoid. Proper, ethical breeders will do full health checks, won't breed the dogs too many times etc.

Ours came from a place who breed dogs and also run a dog training business. Their breeding dogs live with the family and are socialised with pet cats, chickens etc. We couldn't visit because they are in Auckland and it's a long way off. Humphrey flew down to us. But they sent lots of photos and were happy to answer all of my questions. No alarm bells went off with their answers.

My friend recommended this book

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0957005113?ref_=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0

It's a great read and the advice given is already starting to pay off.

We're finding that training our five year-old is proving more difficult as the dog listens but my daughter apparently knows everything already.

Ah, Labradoodles and other mixed breeds. What we knew as mongrels. However, no money in mongrels. Yes, cynical, but that's old age for you.

"Designer dogs" :D
Labradoodloes have been recognised as an official breed in Australia now I think.

Anyway...

Last night we came home to an epic Humphrey poo incident! Poo on his bed, poo on the floor, poo on the dog, poo on his food dish. He wiped poo on my jeans and t shirt too. Bathed him, cleaned everything, binned his bed, screw cleaning that mess! Settled down with a cuppa. What's that smell? Opened door. Poo behind door now a brown arc on the floor. Three poos on his spare bed. Sigh. Poo cleaned up again, dog locked outside while I sat for 20 mins to try to work out if I would keep my tea down.
Ah, puppies! Humphrey didn't really enjoy his first bath!

Haha. We have three cats, and Maddie thinks cat pooh is a delicacy. Dogs can be revolting creatures from a human perspective, even if it is natural for them to snack on animal faeces

Wow he is cute.

Do dogs cope with being left alone?

That's a difficult question to answer, some dogs are ok with being left alone for a while whereas others can quickly get anxious and start destroying things or doing the toilet inside unexpectedly.  Others can be fine for a while but they're different to cats that can be left alone for a while as long as their food is topped up, we don't leave our dog at home along for much more than a couple of hours although he's absolutely fine on his own.

He doesn't like being left, and we can hear him crying from outside as we leave. But he soon just settles down and sleeps until we get back.

We leave him in his crate if we're not going to be too long as I think he would eat the dining table if he was able to.

I first met a doodle years ago as a rescue dog .The burn marks from some idiots ciggie burns were healing, and the owner warned me that he might be bothered  as it was a man that had hurt him. Not him- he loved my patting. These days, we regularly meet a Labradoodle ,who 's only intention is to get on my knee on the scooter, and get fussed. I might hav entioned this before, but owner is frightened to leave his GK with dog, as kids could hurt dog. One time, he heard dog screaming. Turned out, that one grand kid had sunk teeth into dog tail .Most dogs would attack the kid. This one didn't.

He's doing pretty well. Still a very cheeky puppy and he's constantly looking for things to steal to get attention. He can't settle for cuddles with us, he has to be constantly active. Shut him in the dining room - where he can see us but can't get to us - and he settles down and is calm. We're working on this :D
