New Tyre's Time

Featured Replies

Do all season tyres have a mountain image on the sidewall and winter tyres have a snowflake ?

Those tyres look to be great value. 71 dB isn't that loud, though I'm running 67 and 69 summer and winter tyres at the moment - 2 dB less is 37% less sound energy, so it is quite noticeable. Getting a C on wet grip means it'll take 1 to 2 car lengths longer than an A rated tyre to stop from 50 mph as far as I can gather, which for an all season tyre is very good. I'd put the Michelins on the back for when it gets icy to minimise the chance of oversteer, but only if they still have plenty of tyre tread left to resist aquaplaning (Which is probably more likely in UK driving conditions over the winter - it's certainly more likely here in Ireland).

You won't get full grip from any new set of tyres until you have a few hundred miles on them, especially on the back wheels of a front wheel drive car, so they haven't reached their full performance yet.

They are not m&s tyres

That does seem very cheap for a pair of tyres of that size, but as said the tread pattern looks like a summer tyre.

Maybe you had better check as if you have true winter tyres on the front and the rears are summer tyres you may have a very unbalanced, almost to the point of dangerous, car when braking, handling, cornering etc in extreme weather conditions.

A bit like the old radial vs cross ply, although I don't think mixing summer and winter tyres is illegal (I might be wrong) but I also suspect the insurance company wouldn't take kindly to it if the worst happened and they checked the car out.

yes they are m8 I've been out & checked on them today

I've found the hankooks are good namely the k115

Get the best you can afford. Try and stick to the more premium brands. The cheapie Chinese ones just have any labelling put on them

Linglong FTW, in all seriousness I use a lot of Toyos and Hankooks, all found to be very good tyres for the money

M+S is worthless anyway. It means nothing about the compound or pattern, just that 25% of the tread is open. It's the mountain and snowflake logo that matters as that's an actual winter certification.

Looking at the tread pattern I wouldn't consider them even remotely wintry.

To be honest if we have snow the car won't be used & as long they are legal also will me last me until feb 2016 the they will be be replaced with full set of 4x either michelin cross climate or uniroyal rain sport / the existing ones will be removed & sold on eBay as part worns as they all will have appprox 7.5mm tread remaing.

, I used to buy Michelin , good but so pricey   . Hankooks are a standard factory fit on some mercs and fords . I've been buying them for about 3 years now for my cars , their wear has gone from about 18 k on the front up to around 26 k with the same drivers , cars and type of journeys so something has been done to the compound it would seem

Quick update & so far so good the rears i had fitted seem to handling what ever is chucked at them without issue so far in both wet & dry.

I put a set of 4 Michelin Cross Climates on my MK2 on Friday, done 350 miles since then, very quiet, seem to grip well on damp roads.  Very impressed so far.

I have 16k kms on the Barums I put on a few months ago.  Seem to be the best tyre I've had for a while in terms of noise and wear.  Wasn't overly confident fitting them at first but very impressed so far.

We have Barums on our MKI - love 'em. Quiet, hard wearing and great grip wet or dry. Have Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta on the MKII and these are excellent too. I've not bothered with the so called "premium" brands for years....

I think Vredestein charge premium prices these days. I remember when SporTrac3s used to be a great well priced tyre. They rose £25 in a year and became expensive.

When I changed tyres last year the difference between Hankook and Goodyear was less than £2! Certain brands have moved from budget to mid range and now the high end market relativity quickly

It's between the Rainsports and Goodyear Efficientgrip Performance for me. At £49.94 each for the Rainsports vs. £72.75 for the Goodyears I'll probably live with the increase in tyre noise. There's quite a premium for going to 225/50 R17 tyres compared to the 45 section ones too (Rainsports are £68.95 at this size), but that is tempting also since a few people on here have done it without any problems and the roads aren't getting any better.

The Dunlop Sportmaxx RTs I use at the moment are within 1 mm of the wear marker after about 9 months on the car. I'm used to getting 2 summers from a set of tyres from my Octavia (Which admittedly was lighter and had 160 Nm less torque) but I did less mileage this year than usual, which should have counteracted somewhat for that. I can't fault the Dunlops in terms of grip and quietness though. They were priced about the same as the Rainsports anywhere I looked, so the noise figure was the decider last time.
