VCDS buying

Featured Replies

Chaps, will this do the job for me? I did the same thing years ago for OPCOM for my Vauxhall and it worked a treat :-)

Stolen cracked software and a cheap generic cable.

Sorry but Briskoda does not allow discussion about counterfeit equipment - which is what that removed link referred to.

Ok, I'm not familiar with this issue. What would indicate that the 'goods' are stolen? Isn't an OBD2 plug to USB plug the same for any vehicle? Where would I buy non 'stolen' stuff from? Is there some sort of world wide embargo on diagnostic software writing? [confused]

That link was to a fake cable with cracked software.

If you look at the ross tech website (who make vcds) they have a list of official suppliers. Illexa and Gendan are the UK ones I know.

Ross Tech have no connection with vw and have spent an enormous amount of time and effort producing vcds, only for some people to try and crack their software and sell it with cheap dodgy cables.

OK. So is Ross Tech the only software that one can buy that is 'legitimate,' for lack of a better word? If Ross Tech have no connection with VW - then do VW have their own in-house software for their dealers. Is Ross Tech the only company on the planet that writes software suitable for VAG diagnostics?

Ross Tech are not the only people, there is also vag can pro (which is in some ways more powerful but can also really mess things up).

VW have their own software which is not available to the public and costs £££££££££.

There are a whole raft of code readers out there, you just need a can bus capable one rather than a generic OBDII reader.

Another option is the Carista smartphone app and a Bluetooth/wireless OBDII dongle. Carista can read codes and do some changes. But not as much as vcds.

That looks like genuine, but is not from one of the registered sellers so perhaps that's why it's overpriced. VCDS can be had for about £265 for the basic version and the pro kit (as in the link) for more. Check the mentioned sellers in the earlier post (gendan and Ilexa) but expect to pay in the region of £265 or so.

Edit: Anyone referring to Vag Com is about 10 years out of date. VCDS is the correct name for the product now.

Is this mostly to sort out coding cruise control from your other thread?

If so, I'd try the diagnoatics & VCDS section.

http://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/23-diagnostics-vcds/

There is a list of VCDS owners and a map which might help you find someone local. I'm sure if you drop them a PM you'll find someone to help after Xmas.

Thanks for the helpful replies, especially trundlenut.

Now as it happens I have a bluetooth OBD2 dongle that I've used on my Astra to reset it out of limp mode which it sometimes goes into as I've drastically reduced the EGR flow some years ago.

So would you think this Carisa app would recode the steering unit and ECU on the vehicle (2009) after I've shoved the new stalk with cruise control in?

Cheers, Julian.

Langers 2K - Yes is the answer.

I have the stalk now. A proper one with proper destructions in umpteen languages!

But today I had the bulb failure lamp come on - as easy fix as it was a headlamp bulb swap which I did outside of euro car parts in Gloucester on my way home, but as I'm going to keep the car I think I should buy some diagnostic equipment of some sort as It's sure to be needed with the over complex ridiculous technology on today's vehicles.

You need to have a look at the Carista website to see if it can enable cruise and if your dongle is compatible.

I had a good look at their site and I don't think it does the sort of thing I need.

I'm going to buy that pro one from Gendan next week, I've decided that the £50 that a garage will charge me to do the 2 minute job is actually £50 that I can deduct from the price of buying my own kit which will come in very handy in future.

I doubt you'll need the Pro version. Just the standard version will do all you need.

Edit: And well done for being the sensible type who accepts that the genuine item is worthwhile. Often people are too quick to buy the rip off versions and claim they're not going to support the rip off manufacturers for [insert any bullsh*t excuse here] reason. Without RossTech to engineer the product in the first place there would be no rip off merchants to buy from, would there.

Well It's arrived, I got the pro version as it seemed like it would come in more useful in future for other stuff maybe...

Now there's two tasks to perform: see if I can download the software onto my windows 10 little laptop and 2/ find where the OBD plug hides itself on the car :-)

Skoda Octy 2 (as per this sub-forum) 59 reg.

It's all loaded by the looks, but it needs connecting to the car so I can get the long serial number to register it, and guess what, the car is at the local garage now for an MOT in the morning so I'm done for now anyway.

The plug is the purple thing under the dash near the bonnet release.

Well that all went swimmingly. Registered with Ross Tech and loaded up with no issues.

Cruise control stalk shoved on, coded and test driven - works perfectly. Dead easy as the VCDS shows you the correct codes to use.

The hardest part was fathoming out how to get the various gubbinsess around the steering column free - thankfully I found a good video of youtube that showed how to release the various plastic catches without snapping it all!

Julian.

Ross Tech VCDS is worth every penny. Glad you're satisfied with it.
