12v supply for dash cam's?

Featured Replies

No there is an ignition switched 12v power supply at the motor, (it is live whenever the ignition is on)

That's excellent thanks - it makes the installation of a separate rear facing camera much easier & neater. Haven't got my superb yet (ordered mid August) but planing on getting a nextbase 412gw for the front plus a separate camera for the rear now I know this.

Started research on dash cam fitting and found this info at http://www.ukpassats.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=148&t=84105&start=0 posts by "big boz" 14 sept. If I've got this right , adding info from Suuperb handbook and the Passat glovebox fuse box looking identical, then he identified fuse #40 "front power socket" as "ignition live" but after "piggy backing" he found it "permanent live". He states "So, the power socket fuse has 2 ways of locating, if you line it up with the rest of the fuses (which is what i did....) it is perm live, offset it down one notch and its ignition live only." This looks to relate to the "yellow box" in the picture at post #20 above and the white vertical line and square coming off the bottom of fuse #40 in the picture in the car handbook

I have just got round to fitting my dash cam and found this post extremely useful. I nearly fell at the first fence as I could not get the glove box stay unfastened but found I was not using enough force. Once again the pictures showing how were very useful.

I appreciate this post was 5 months ago but I was doing a bit of preliminary preparation for fitting a dual dashcam so had a look at this possibility of the offset fuse 40. I don't know if you've looked yourself Peter as there's been nothing further since then.

Unfortunately it doesn't work, at least not in my car. There's no electrical contact for fuse 40 in the lower position (as seems implied by the image in the manual) and just to be certain I gave it a try anyway in case I was just blind but the voltmeter I put in the 12 volt socket remained dead as a dodo with or without ignition until I returned the fuse to the original position. A bit of a shame. If it had worked it would have negated wiring into the fuse panel. Back to Plan A.

Can someone please confirm if the 47 and 48 fuses are mini ones? Thanks
