DSG Stop Start delay

Featured Replies

On my Scout 184DSG, I have noticed the car sometimes delays selecting Drive after the engine restarts.

Usually, I lift off the brake pedal, the engine fires up, the car "selects drive" and the car moves off.

Occasionally there is a pause between the engine firing up and drive being selected, ( often sufficient time to get the horn sounding from the car behind,)

Has anyone else experienced this?

I find that just releasing the brake pedal, the car starts and there is a delay in moving off. But if you release the pedal and go straight to the accelerator, the car starts and immediately  moves off. Mine is a 2013 1.6td

I don't find the car has to select drive? It's always in drive, the engine just fires up and then it moves off.

Someone complained some time ago for a vRS TDi to be slow off the line...

Maybe some electronic safeguard to cope with the incredible torque transmitted to the wheels in 1st gear, especially with the DSG (close to 4800Nm) and avoid skidding.

+1 for this.

Also, when it decides to go, the drive cuts in quite sharply.

Just hit this button each time you start the engine...

That's an awful lot of torque for a pair of rubber tyres..........

LOL no!

At least the Scout has possibly two pairs of them. The worst is the RS TDI DSG, reaching 4900Nm for the only two front wheels...

Try dividing by 10..............

Are you joking?

Or you really have no idea of the kind of torque values you get to the wheels once multiplied by the transmission ratio?

In Standard Drive Mode?

Seems a bit odd, my CR150 DSG doesn't do this, it is moving almost instantly once I release the brake.

There have been engine and gearbox ECU updates for CR184 DSG though, Eco mode issues and others, might be worth asking at the dealers. I find video evidence is good, as they can't do the 'We couldn't reproduce it so No Fault Found' line when presented with evidence prior to it going in :)

Mine is the same as Andy's. No problems pulling away but holding on the footbrake at junctions can be a pain if the engine does not turn off. It hunts quite badly to the extent that I stick it in neutral. Anyone else get this?

Only if it is halfway through a regen so S/S is disabled, the higher idle rpm makes it want to pull away. If it is because the heated windscreen is on or some other reason that disables S/S but it is at normal idle speed it is OK.

The DSGs are really easy to control the S/S with, a little brake pressure holds you and keeps the engine running, a bit more pressure and the S/S kicks in.

That would make sense. I have a 15 minute motorway run on the way home. I get this at the junctions as I come off the motorway so re-gen is likely.

I get this "feature" when HHC is activated (IE: >5% grade).

From the manual: "The system holds the brake pressure produced by the activation of the brake pedal for approx. 2 seconds after the brake pedal is released."

If you go to the dealer be prepared for a "It's not a fault - It's a feature"-statement  :notme:

Given enough motivation (IE. Throttle) HH won't be an issue.

Does it do this all the time or only after a long time in traffic or creeping?

I remember one of the early threads where another DSG owner had the kind of problem that the DSG didnt engage drive & creep until the driver pressed the accelerator & then it takes of with quite a jolt.

If I remember correctly, this answer from the dealer was that this was a protection that kicks in when the gearbox becomes hot to try to lower the temperatures.

I seem to recall there was some kind of update to reduce the overheating affect but I cant remember if it was a "included in the next gen gearbox" kind of update.

Have a look through some the old DSG threads & I'll see if I can find it.

I drove an Audi A3 diesel DSG with stop/start recently.

It was a bit slow to restart and drive away as the OP reports.

I discovered that if I reduced pressure on the brake pedal some of the way, the engine would restart an the car was still held on the brakes.

Not sure if this method would work on a hill as maybe not enough brake would be applied to hold the car?

I thought there was an option to disable HHC, but I can't find it any more. Did I just imagine it?

Nope, it's always on.

Looked in VCDS, but couldn't find a way to disable it or at least increase the 5% value. Guess it's considered a safety feature.

I have been watching a bit more closely and it would appear to be the Hill Holder which causes the delay!

When the car is on the level or pointing slightly downhill, the car pulls away immediately. If the car is pointing even ever so slightly uphill, the delay is there when pulling away!
