Car that's good for people with less mobility?

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a car that's easy to get in / out of for people who are less mobile? And that's quiet while driving?

Not too bothered about acceleration but would prefer 11s 0-60 or less if possible.

Would prefer to pay no more than £18k. Less is good. 2nd hand is ok.

I'm going to test drive a Citroen cactus but I need to see what it's like for getting into the back seat.

I tried a new Yeti but the back seats are quite a way in from the doorframe, so you need to bend a bit to get in (at least that's what I found). This might be a safety thing, giving bigger crumple zones.

I like my octavia but the seats are quite low. It's also lovely and quiet on decent tarmac, but doesn't keep out road noise particularly well on a bad motorway surface.

Before that I had an X reg Renault Scenic and that was extremely easy to get in / out of, but it leaked and broke down a bit...

Thanks

Ford Ecosport, Kia Soul, Vauxhall Mokka and Hyundai iX 20 are all good cars in this respect - I had a look at some cars recently with a disabled friend

Don't get a vRS ;)

As much as I really dislike the car as a driver's car (I've had a couple of them on hire and imho they're awful to drive) but I know a few people with mobility issues who really rate the Nissan Qashqai for easy of getting in and out etc.

Id need to go looking, but theres a website where you can choose what space need, level of mobility etc and it will list out cars that suit.

Eg accurate boot dimensions for wheel chair storage etc.

Ill dig it out.

Gotz it

Corolla Verso?

My parents had an older version and found it very good for accessibility.  Had the 1.8 VVTi in it, so could get up and go if you wanted it to.

A second vote for the Qashqai here too.

Thanks for all the great info.

The new VW Golf SUV, recently had one on loan and it is remarkably easy to get in/out and the rear leg room is huge, must be on a par with a Superb.

I'm 6'4" and struggled to touch the seat behind me when reaching back behind me.

I'd go VW Golf SV too.....nice looking motor, decent performance and masses of room inside. More importantly for you, the doors open wide and the openings are good too.

My parents also swore by their 3 door Toyota Rav 4 for the same reasons but the doors were big and heavy given a 3 door, so it depends on the specific disability or mobility issue I guess.

Every one is different, I'm disabled and 6'5". I banged my head off the side rail when sat in the Qashqai. My sister is 5'7", large, and loves her Roomster, and I would have had another Roomster instead of the Yeti if the seat squab had been a little bit higher off the ground. The Cactus I tried didn't have a lot of room for me, and did not have a split fold back seat, minor things like that can be important if walking aids are needed. I suggest ringing a selection of main dealers and ask to speak with their Motability/disability sales person.
