2.0CR 170 Diesel in wintertime

Featured Replies

Always thought the grille covers shown above look like they do more than they actually do..... Bearing in mind that only the bottom inch or so of the grille lets air through as the rest of it is solid anyway. ;)

Now I rememer reading somewhere (in manual ?) that Superb does have automatic temperature dependent grille, which closes and opens it acoording to engine`s temperature.

At least my Mondeo had it, that`s why I believe remembering it.

Could be one reason. Or is it only facelift option?

Well, then that's fast. Maybe there is some additional heating you don't know about.

My 140 hp diesel (I think that in this case there is no much difference - basically 2.0 TDI) doesn't  warm up that fast even in much warmer weather. Still I think my thermostat is OK because I've never seen anything weird about temperature. When it gets to ~90 then it basically keeps it for all the time (it may change a bit but it's normal - depending on driving style and speed).

Or maybe yours is some Nordic edition. My car is originally from Germany.

No, the car does not electric additional heater, because it cannot be together with webasto autonomous heater. However it might be "nordic" edition, as it was ordered from Skoda dealers in Lithuania.

Due to the engine being fuel efficient it doesn't have much spare heat to use for cabin heating so lots of cars have electric heating ,my mk5 Mondeo this morning was churning out warm air within 2mins of starting with an ambient temperature of -1 c

It's an irritating omission from the spec and/or options list of Skodas in the UK. I would happily pay for an optional PTC heater on my car. The heated windscreen helps a little though.

Sorry for bringing such an old thread up, just wanted to inform, that ALL superb diesels sold in europe, does have an electric heater placed in the airduct of the ventilation system. It does not help on temperature of cooling fluid, but it helps getting hot air inside the cabin pretty quickly, if its cold outside.

no, if the car has a factory auxiliary diesel heater, rebranded Webasto, this is missing, mine does not have an eheater

Mines doesnt and I am in Europe
I had to fit my PTC

well am in Europe this month might not be the month after😏

For those that have the DSG gearbox, there is a separate thermostat just for DSG cooling that is prone to fail in the open state.

This allows the cooling system to effectively by-pass the main radiator thermostat, & prevents the coolant from reaching it's designed temperature of 90C, especially noticeable when driven slowly or around town.

This will cause the cars interior heating system to be very ineffective, especially as the outside temperature drops.

What do you mean with PTC exactly?

Did you fit an electric heater afterwards?

Is there a how to do this?

Yes @wokwon done a cracking write up and a pdf file for the full job.

I fitted a cheap £25 from eBay

( I have wired it through a huge switch)
but want to upgrade to a newer one that works through canbus

Shall look for the post later tonight and post here

@DEL80Y

Are you somewhere in Europe that is getting tied up to Tugs and being towed to some other continent?

Interesting, thank you.

Is it possible to add a PTC heater to a car that already has a diesel Aux heater?

I don't *think* so as they're both CAN module 7D "Aux Heater" so you can't have two module address 7D at one time.

Could be wrong about this.  You could always use the F variant of the PTC element and supply your own switched power to it somehow as it's not CAN bus interactive, but you'd need to be careful to manage the car's power demands if you do this .

Adress 7D on the gateway is exclusively used for the PTC heater. So yes it is indeed possible to have both the PTC electric heater in the airduct, and also a dieselpowered webasto.

But if you use the newer PTC heating elements, controlled by the ECU, you will not have anything on the 7D address, as it is not controlled by canbus.

Actually it is the newer ones, there is controlled directly from the engine ECU. There is 2 outputs from the ECU to the heater element.

The old ones was controlled by canbus address 7D

Yep that's the 'F' variant, it needs the big relays (low heat and high heat) fitted in the relay box.
