  • Just remembered the funniest one I've ever had. It was late, I was driving a transit towing a big long  trailer with a car on it, I was in no rush, so I was just doing 60 in lane 1. Ever the course of

  • I only do that when it's quiet. My record is 17 times on an empty m1.   Generally, carry on in lane 1, try not to wake them, although it is a good time to empty the dregs out of a coffee or milkshak

I never undertake. No matter how fast i could do it.. I wont.

Ill go right across to lane three.. Give them full beams as im moving all the way over.. Go past.. Indicate left and go right back to lane 1 again.

They sometimes get the idea

I normally stay in Lane 1 and undertake but keeping a watchful eye on him /her.

Used to always pull over to Lane 3 and over take, then pull back in to Lane 1. However, over the last year or so I started to notice more and more that when I began to overtake, the vehicle in Lane 2 which had happily been sat there at 55-60mph would suddenly speed up to match my speed. I then slowed down and pulled back into Lane 1, and the vehicle in Lane 2 would revert back to 55-60mph.

The other thing I notice more and more, even when I completed the overtake, the vehicle would speed up in Lane 2 and keep abreast of me.

Hence why I favour undertaking in Lane 1.

I've done all three. Typically will move to lane three happily and watch them move over in my rear view to lane 1.

Sad thing is most days on my commute when I use the M1 I find that I'm undertaking at 60mph in the first lane and I've often found that it's impossible to go to overtake as a car has sped up from the third lane into the second to undertake someone else and is now closing in on the Nissan Qashqai sitting in the middle lane that I was about to overtake... so in this case, undertaking it will be.

Slowing down for middle lane hoggers just so you don't get a fine yourself for undertaking really grinds my gears.

..if on quiet roads, and good conditions, move to lane 3, give lights and horn as you pass to get their attention, then use the unofficially recognised international hand gesture that signals the driver should move to lane 1 :finger:

anything else gets the standard overtake and return to lane 1 manoeuvre, and forget about them - two wrongs don't make a right.

I am nowadays more aware than ever that a driver in another car is a stranger, and could well be anyone.... vulnerable or dangerous. they may know of a pothole coming up in lane 1, or think lane one is for wagons only.

As annoying as it can be, always imagine you are in court trying to explain your actions

Its also amazing how peoples lane discipline dramatically improves when a marked police car is among the convoy!  :giggle:

Sandwich passers are in the same category... overtaking so slowly, the occupants could well be swapping their lunch between vehicles.

I firmly believe that arnold clarke stickered vehicles are the ones who mainly stock egg mayonnaise and prawn sandwiches. Avoid those at all cost!

I'd normally go to lane 3 and back again, making sure that I indicate extra brightly (if only). But I also have to admit to doing all 3 things at some point. It worries me that some drivers are so unaware of their actions.

I have done silly things many times on the road, mostly not deliberately, but I think I was always aware that I was the 'baddie' and hopefully at the very least raised a hand in apology. But middle lane 'Space Cadets' really annoy me.

Middle age is a terrible thing :D

Lane 1 for me, with a little sideways glare at them as I trundle past, if I catch a glimpse of a phone screen lighting up their face I give them a root of the horn.

JRJG

Could an overhead Sign say " NO MIDDLE LANE AHEAD " and then another sigh saying  " ALTERNATIVE ROUTE " at the next Exit. It might get hoggers off the Motorways.

Coming up to the middle lane hogger in lane 1, I flash my lights, may get their attention and they may move over. If not, go into lane 2, flash lights behind them, possibly accompanied by a left indicator to give them a hint where to move to (appreciate this may confuse drivers behind me). If all else fails, just overtake them in lane 3. I used to be a staunch undertaker, but I don't do that any more just in case they decide to move into lane 1 while I'm undertaking. The way I see it, if they're not concentrating on which lane they're in, then they probably won't check their mirrors and blindspot properly.

I use to do the full loop round, L 1-2-3 then 3-2-1 but I tend to just breeze up L1 now and keep my eyes peeled and keep over to the left of the lane ready to dive onto the HS if needed.

I was driving at approximately xx mph in lane one of the motorway, traffic was slowing and queuing in lanes 2 and 3, in accordance with rule 163 of the highway code I remained in my lane where there was nothing to impede my progress. I passed a Honda Civic travelling at 38mph in lane two, at a glance, it appeared that the driver's Viagra had worn off.

I wonder who would be in the wrong in court.

A driver in Lane 1 maintaining a safe and constant speed who undertakes, or a driver in Lane 2 driving slower and, imo, more dangerously.

Usually if I am in lane 1 & the idiot in either lane 2 or 3 is going slower I just stay my course......can't help it if they are idiots

I also like to limit my T.E.D with these idiots so staying in lane 1 is the safest..........

Unless of course it is on a bend & I can get really far ahead due to driving the shorter curve then I will switch lanes..........

Probably just fine both of them. ++Revenue

And why not; the fact that $CLOGie is committing an offence does not mean that $undertaker isn't.

Many years ago, myself and a colleague were heading north on the Al late at night, no racing involved, but we were both sitting at about warp 1 in big comfy cars, having a chat on the handsfree.

We got to the a1m, nothing on it but a spec in the distance straddling lanes 2 and 3.

As we got nearer, it turned out to be a matiz, doing less than wagon speed, sitting bang in the middle of all four lanes.

Obviously blasting past each side of him would be dangerous and irresponsible, so we never would suggest such an action is a good idea.

Woke the **** up though!

What were you imagining your explanation would be if you were pulled up regarding your warp 1 manoeuvre, Steve?

It was my mate's idea? :D .

You've got the quotes knotted, I didn't post that.

In the case of the matiz though, I was driving in a progressive manner iand moved to lane 4 to pass a matiz on the offside.

No idea who the bloke in the Omega was or why he was wearing the same uniform as me!

Omega. Now theres a car id forgotten about.

Dad had one once. Auto 2.2 iirc. Nice enough car. Comfy. Abit slow though. Heavy arent they.

His was a v6, think it was a manual. Can't remember the bloke's name mind, this is at least 7 years ago.

Ah. Ours was the 2.2 diesel auto (far too many miles for a petrol) . It was abit steady. The 1.8TDCI 115bhp focus Ghia we had at the time seemed faster.

Those Omega's weigh about the same as a tank. I remember thinking itd need the v6 to make it anything like.

Anyway. Thats off topic.. Sorry :D

Various ways of tacking the situation.

I,& others behind me(I've noticed ) have tried the swoop and horn approach- move out , then move back to L1 ,with indicator s on ,with horn sounding. Sometimes it works. What I've also done with a large Transit, is to pretend an undertake. Most often the car in L2, will speed off and get into L1.

I've seen some who treat overtaking, then letting L2 pass as a game, to see how often, L2 passes before they get the message.

Stage 1, pass L2 car, sharply, indicating left and get back into L1. Slow down, and let L2 pass. Move out into L3, PASS AND REPEAT.

^^^^^

Sound like the perfect reason that every driver should have to sit a Driving test every 5 years.

All drivers that passed tests before the introduction of Motorways or Speed limits should be called in first!

Stage 1, pass L2 car, sharply, indicating left and get back into L1. Slow down, and let L2 pass. Move out into L3, PASS AND REPEAT.

**** me. That could go on all day..

**** that for a lark.
