Sticky Handbrake

Featured Replies

Wondering if anyone else has had issues with their handbrake sticking during wet weather? Mine does when it's been raining, has done for a while but it's getting steadily worse. Should note that I've got drums on the back.

Could be sticking cable, happens quite a lot on Vauxhalls in particular. Due to poor design of cable on them

Yeah, pretty much everybody whos got a Fabia with drums has that problem.

Its the shoes sticking with rust.

They really do 'all do that sir'.

If you can, if you have a drive and its flat. Probably worth leaving it in gear with the handbrake off.

Its a pita.

Can be quite tough to get off tbh. Sat on the drive dipping the back end, trying to set off.. Then CLUNK, CLUNK as it releases. Then its fine.

Mine did this until the garage gave them a good clean. In the end the shoes had to be replaced (on my old one at 90K!)

I try to leave the handbrake off, especially after the wet weather or washing it

I had a combo one stuck for about a Mile before it released :P

If you can, break the seizure in reverse - it's usually a lot less violent than forwards.

Also, try applying the handbrake on & off  during the last half mile or so before stopping and dry it out.

Never thought of that.

I do park close to the garage door though. So id probsbly end up accidently ramming through it hahaha

Our 09 HTP has done this ever since it had some routine "service" work done at a Skoda garage, at about 2 or 3 years old.  I went back and complained, but they maintain there is nothing wrong with it.

The 12 HTP we have has only ever done it once in 3+ years, after getting very wet last month wading up the M6 and along the A66 in Cumbria.

I have a suspicion that there is an inspection hole in the rear brake backplate which is supposed to have its bung/blind grommet replaced after use... If the bung is left out it's an easy way in for the spray.

You might be onto something. Mines defo getting worse as the car ages. Its a 2013 model and its only really been bad this year.

However, i use an independant Skoda specialist for servicing and he assures me he takes the drums off and cleans them thoroughly at each service.

As its getting worse though, ill have a word with him at next service and see if theres anythin which can be done. Itd due in march or 1500 miles, whichever comes first. The latter probably.

im impressed :D

I'll have a look when i get chance, see whats going on there. It doesnt look in a likely spot to get wet just from washing the car though? and mine sticks on after just a wash tbh

Nice if you would let us know what you find - If I try and look down there it will need a winch to get me back up again, if it's cold and/or damp.

cold or damp.. hmm.. quite alot this week here :(

itll most likely be weekend before i see my car in daylight hours :D, and thats if it hasnt snowed, which is given wednesday night. urgh.

Pull handbrake up half way after driving in wet conditions for a few mins prior to parking. Again, pull it up enough to work but not too tightly as you will expel the water, leaving salt etc to glue up the mechanism. leave the car parked in either first or reverse, depending on the gradient, if parked on non flat road.

With mine though, it can be dry when i park it, we'll get some heavy rain then the next time i get in its stuck.

Its abit **** really, tbh.

TRhat goes for discs as well.

Never leaves the car with the handbrake pulled. 1st gear does it to me.

BONG!

Does your Skoda not go BONG! if you do that?

It gets dopey if it bongs for too long, i heard.

Having always had a garage to store the car in, I first noticed this "brakes seizing overnight" when I had my first car with rear disc brakes, if parked with handbrake off after driving in heavy rain, starting to reverse out of garage next day was tricky, then a bang and the car moved!

off? or do you mean on?

off? or do you mean on?

Unfortunately no, I meant off - which was initially a shock for me to find!  If I'm being honest, I initially discovered this if driving the car a very short distance after washing it.  I think that it just means that the disc<>pad clearance was very small so it held water and rusted over quickly.

To add to that, I'll be surprised if when my wife's new Polo reaches its first birthday, I do not go and replace the rear discs due to them becoming very scaby, I was not expecting that either, her previous Polo only needed its rear discs replacing due to scabyness after 6 years.

Going back to drum rear brakes, I've found in the past that trying to clear any built up rust by running with the handbrake on is not very effective, it will fix it for a short time, what is needed is to either remove the drums and remove all signs of blackened area, which are rust that has been braked on, and these surfaces are harder than the linings, so they just get polished up and not cleared by braking, other fix is to replace the drums!

Does go bong if you drive more then about ten-fifteen mph... Drive slower!
