Boot courtesy lights not working

Featured Replies

The courtesy lights in the boot of my car haven't worked since the day I got it (second hand).

I doubt they are on a fuse of their own are there any known issues I should check?

You've already had water in the boot right?

When the pipe leaks it soaks a controller behind the carpet, a subsequence of which is a mix of dodgy rear lights, boot lights and boot release mechanism.

I'd be removing the carpet and properly drying out the controller.

I have, but the lights didn't work before that.  The water in the boot came only from the knacker spindle on the wiper and only affected the mechanism of the wiper - everything else is functioning fine.

I thought I'd seen the courtesy lights working at one point when selecting reverse, but on further investigation this is only the reversing lights shining through the courtesy light lens.

In that case water has more than likely gone from the spindle and down into the boot catch / mechanism.

There is a micro-switch in here that controls the boot lights.

When the boot is open is the 'open door' light on the dashboard?

I'll need to check that tomorrow.

I'm facing this issue. Boot locks and unlocks fine but the boot light doesn't work and the boot open status doesn't show up on the Maxidot/dash. Boot light was working fine till this morning when I saw it flickering. Was busy with something so couldn't investigate, but later in the evening it wasn't lighting up. Is this a micro switch issue? And if yes, what's the fix? Can I do it at home or do I need to visit Skoda?  Thanks for any inputs.

See here, unless you fancy removing and stripping down the boot catch mechanism then it'll be a new one...

Thanks. So Skoda it'll have to be. If it's too expensive I'll probably have to just live with it. As long as it opens and locks fine that is.

You can always try to remove the lights and check the connectors. In My case my connectors were rusted a lot. Cleaning this off fixed the issue.

You can also test if there is current coming to the wires by attaching a multi-meter to them.

Na, it's definitely the micro switch / sensor in the lock (the part that's located on the boot lid). I tried pressing the catch on the lock repeatedly after opening the trunk and I could see the cabin lights and boot open indicator on the maxidot flicker. So the switch isn't completely gone, but there's some loose contact or something. Not sure if this can be fixed. Knowing Skoda, they'll want to change of course.

Okay sorry, i might have misread the original topic where you mentioned that.

If you are interested, you can try to open the switch assembly and check for any loose contacts or any oxidized contacts. This is how i was able to fix the window switch in drivers door.

It can be tricky to open any switch since they are not really meant to be repaired, but it is usually doable.

It of course depends on how much you want to mess with it.

Was there a definitive solution to this problem as I've noticed one of mine takes a while to come on while the other just needs a tap for it to light up?

It just started working again in my car. Quite spooky - didn't do anything. Keeping my fingers crossed.

It's temperamental. Sometimes it thinks the boots open and lights up sometimes the boot is open but it doesn't recognise it and then locks itself and sets the alarm off!

Hi!

I have a similar problem with a Octavia Mk2 Estate (2011) - suddenly the two lights in the boot have stopped. The "boot open" warning light on the dashboard works fine. I can't find a decent wiring diagram to trace it back, and the map of the fuse box in the manual doesn't seem to relate to reality. So can you help me with a logic path -

It is unlikely that these lights are on a separate fuse, so if everything else is working it's not likely to be a fuse.
If both lights are out it's unlikely to be a bulb issue.

If the microswitch on the tailgate lock is sending an open warning, it's unlikely that the problem is there,

Not sure where to go next.
There isn't anything weired like some link to the internal courtesy lights is there?

With the boot open, remove trim the left hand side so you can see a metal stud welded to the panel with a number of wires going to it, including the negative/ground wires for your boot lights.

Often the connection become corroded by leakage from the screen washer pipe. If the water in the pipe freezes due to insufficient strength of washer fluid then the frozen fluid will push off a pipe connector with the result above.

@BristolPete Yes, maybe just try a new bulb also. Easy and cheap enough.

I get what you say about them both stopping working but would be the first step IMO.

Keeping spare bulbs is very sensible anyway.

Personally I would check for voltage at the bulb holder before buying bulbs.

Feeback. The problem gradually widened. The care couldn't sense that the tailgate was open, which then meant it relocked and the alarm kept going off.
I've replaced the tailgate lock and now all is well.

Hi there, sorry to hijack the thread, I'm having this exact same problem, how much did the tailgate lock cost and is it dealer part only? Thanks

I paid about £25 on Ebay, which was good as you could check it was the one to fit my car. It isn't hard to fit, but does take a bit of courage to prise off the facia panels. You also need a six pointed star screwdriver to undo the bolts.

Seriously, I'm pretty rubbish when it comes to these things. I have a friend whose a mechanic who let me do it in his garage just in case I got stuck, but it was okay.
It felt so good when everything - warning light on dashboard, courtesy lights etc - worked again.
