Skoda Octavia 2 swaying on road

Featured Replies

Hi their having some trouble with my skoda Octavia mk2 tdi vrs. At around 50-60mph the car seems to sway even on a flat bit of road. Car has had rear shockers rear control arm bushes 4 wheel alignment. Had it into garage and they can't seem to find any troubles either. Anyone any ideas?

How long has it done this for and have you had any work done?

At a rough guess try swapping your rear wheels to the front in case it's uneven tyre wear.

Think it has done it for a while I seem to notice it more with passengers in the back. Tried swapping wheels over tonight and it's still doin it. Really confused

Have you checked tyre pressure?

I have same prob but get a horrible clunk when pulling away my steering feels bad I think I might have knackered the electronic steering

Eliminate the possibility of a loose (silent) or knackered (rumbling) wheel bearing somewhere.  Jack up each wheel in turn off the ground and grasp the tyre at the top and the bottom.  It shouldn't be possible to rock it.  Check that it spins freely and quietly, apart from some normal brake disc scuffing.

Just stick to one pint of lager, see if that improves things!

Had it on a shaker plate ramp and still can't find anything wrong. Only thing I can think of is maybe cheap tyres but I have never had this with cheap tyres in past?

When you say cheap what brand are they ?

Nexan CP641 for me for 3 years and no problems and 20000 miles +.

Like I said, tyre pressure could be checked. I had the same problem and I recognized that all four tyres had lost the pressure at some level.

My colleague had this problem with his cheap Westlake tyres. Even properly inflated tyres provided poor performance on the road and after some while he started feeling some type of "floating". After reading forums on the INternet, he found out that many other people had same problems with Westlake tyres.

How much tread depth have you got left? I had this problem once as the tyres were wearing down it got a bit worse. I always change my tyres at 3mm as well. It seemed to follow every ridge or uneven surface in the road. Once new tyres were fitted, problem solved. Can't remember what make the tyres were though as it was some time ago.

I've got the same problem on my Scout. Fixing it by buying a new one! However, it's done 220k miles and has got a few bits that are not justifiable to fix...

Garage couldn't see anything wrong. Have put my summer tyres back on to see if it helps (it doesn't) and have had a 4 wheel alignment.

Would be interesting to see if anyone gets to the bottom of this

That's some impressive mileage for a Scout.

My 8 years old one has just hit 60,000 miles!

Lightweight!

The garage doesn't want to tell the old owner of my new car where it's going - previous owner was very precious and particular about his cars. I keep mine well maintained but it's going to be a workhorse for me

The new car has got 23k and is pristine for a '10 plate. Let's hope this one keeps going for another 200k

Just out of curiosity what big expenses cropped up on your old Scout?

Glad you went for another, although you now have the girly headlights  :D

Could it be faulty rear shocks they are just a year old

They are many and varied:

CV joint on its way out

turbo squeel turning into more of a bearing screech

overdue a cambelt

collapsed drivers seat

RARB bushing

general wear and tear that 220k will do to a car

My main regret is that a colleague's octavia is now on 320k and he's aiming for 500k...

The turbo is going to cost a bit but the rest sounds relatively easy to repair / replace. Plenty of life in the old girl yet!  :D
