New Owner - service question

Hi all,

 

I am the proud new owner of a (used) Superb Mk 2 4x4 170 - I love it.  Ive had it nearly 3 weeks.  We have a young family and so the space is just what we need - its huge, like an aircraft carrier!

 

I would appreciate any help with this query about servicing:

 

According to the service booklet, the car is set for QG1 variable servicing.  But there is a sticker on the dash, and info on the service book, saying next service is due "miles: as per display and date: Dec 2016"  which seems to suggest fixed servicing (QG0/2) instead.  Thoughts on that?

 

When I collected the car from the dealer, they advised they had done an oil change and toothed belt change for me (also marked in the service book with official skoda stamp) - the car had very low miles, but its age meant a belt change would have been due based on that.

 

But, as of the end of last week, (2 weeks ownership and about 800 miles),  a "service now" message is popping up on the dash when I start the car.

 

Now, regardless if its QG1 or QG0/2, I cant make sense of that:

 

I thought that variable service intervals were set by the car monitoring oil quality and advising a service when the quality fell below acceptable levels.  But, if that's true, then it casts doubt on the dealers claim to have changed the oil only a couple of weeks before, right?  Yet, If its fixed servicing, why would it be asking for a service already when the sticker says Dec 2016?

 

I will obviously go back and query this (I admit I forgot to ask which schedule it was on, in the excitement of a new car) but is there any way I can check myself what schedule its on?

 

I do a decent mileage - about 18,000 miles a year.  What service schedule should I be on?  (The first owner did a tiny mileage - 2 or 3,000 a year).

Perhaps they forgot to reset the service trip.

I'd probably agree with Danny. Probably a simple mistake.

Personally I would stick to fixed servicing. Having done the variable thing I don't think it makes sense for a private user and was ushered in to keep the fleet managers happy.

I do 15k miles a year and fixed service on the Superb. Fabia is on variable but I do an in between oil change. Last one cost the princely some of £34 doing it myself with Petronas 5w30 from ECP. Last June's service on the Superb was an oil change at my Indy and cost £90 Inc a quick visual inspection of the suspension as well.

The car will have been set to variable from the factory, hence the sticker in the service book, but most dealers change them over to fixed services during the pre-delivery inspection (PDI), the reason for this is that they see you, your car and your wallet more frequently.

 

I too concur with those above, it sounds as though they haven't properly reset the service indicator.

 

You can however check the miles left and number of days remaining by selecting the service status menu in the Maxidot.

 

I am also a fan of fixed servicing. A car should have fresh oil at least once a year (it is the lifeblood of any engine and it's turbo), but due to your higher mileage you could probably get away with variable. I cover 30,000 miles a year and I'm on fixed, but I service my own car. See my guide here, it is dead easy!

The important thing with your car is (in addition to the cambelt which they've done) the Haldex (4x4) system service. It needs an oil change every 3 years regardless of mileage, so if it hasn't had one already (which I doubt it will have done as nearly all dealers forget about it) I'd get it done for peace of mind. It's only about £80.

 

Keep an eye on your DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) too, my last car (Octavia) was a very low annual mileage car and it ended up suffering all sorts of DPF issues due to the hard life it had suffered (frequent short journey's). Your annual mileage should allow it to regenerate frequently, which might be quite frequent as it sorts itself out (the big giveaway it is performing a regen will be the increased RPM once the engine is up to temperature).

In recent years with prev cars I started going to independent garages rather than dealers - could they handle the Haldex system oil change, or should / must an official outlet do that?

(sorry if a silly Q, but ive never had a 4x4 vehicle before!)

Hi and welcome to a friendly site with a lot of knowledge on offer. I am on my second Superb and I can agree with the above comments regarding servicing. I am, I think, on variable service as I now only do about 5K per year. I do however, put it in for an annual oil change, well worth it in my opinion. 

 

I also used non dealer service in the past, having a problem with my Mk1 I found the local dealer and Skoda UK were not really interested in helping. Will not bore you with the whole story but I did get a satisfactory result.

 

My advice go with a dealer if you find a good one; build up a rapport with them and they and Skoda UK will be very helpful, ( well that is my experience ). For the small additional cost of using dealerships, there are cost savings to be had if you experience any real problems with the car. It is a very well engineered car but as you have noticed, the haldex will require specialist input for any issues.

If you are thinking of changing the Haldex oil yourself have a look at this:     Haldex Pump Fault 0448, and a fix (also changing the haldex clutch oil)

Certainly on earlier versions of Haldex there is a special tool to gain access to the hole where the oil is filled from.

 

Nothing fancy just a bent / shaped spanner I think. Either way I'd imagine not all independent garages would have one to hand?

I too have recently bought a Superb, the 1.8 TSI.  My sticker also shows the variable service but looking at the book it has received fixed service.  Is there something they have physically changed on the car to put it onto the fixed service schedule or is it just that they service it once a year rather than at 20,000 miles say?  Also, should I be using fully synthetic oil or mineral?  Many thanks for your anticipated help.

I'm looking for the same answer to the above, my 1.6 Greenline is on variable and want it on fixed, how do I do this? I cover 10k in approx 6/8 weeks sometimes less

It's a setting on the ECU that is it. Fixed is yearly or 9400miles (which ever is sooner).

always use the best fully synthetic oil you can. The oil pressurises the tensioner so good oil is a must. Regular changes also minimises sludge build up and allows it to work properly.

You can get VAG Quantum 5w30 off ebay at a good price.

Just ask dealer or someone with vcds to change it

You can change from variable to fixed yourself without VCDS.

 

It is doing it the other way around that requires a dealer or VCDS.

 

Following the instructions in the manual will reset the service interval.

 

As mentioned though be warned, once you reset it there is no going back, you'll be on fixed.

 

Also wait until the car needs a service before resetting it.

I have a 2014 superb 1.6 and want to swap from fixed to variable, can someone tell me how to do this, or does it have to go into the dealer. (I drive about 25000 a year and change the oil every 8000)

Dealer I believe.

Or VCDS.
