Superb Hatch Quick Review

- Standard Stereo better than you might think (better than the Seat sound system upgrade in quality if not absolute loudness)

- It's Huge!

- Grips better than it should for a 1.5 tonne barge, on the 19" alloys anyway.

- 190 PS DERV engine pulls it along quicker than you'd think, again given it's perceived size

- It's huge.

- Did I mention it was huge?

- Bi-xenon lights best on any car I've owned by a some margin. Night time limit point is now often beyond the physical capability of the car.

- Adaptive Cruise works brilliantly.

- Won't understeer into the nearest hedgerow if you try to make good progress.

- >50mpg on a brand new engine at 75 - 85 plus A road dash.

- Jeez, it's BIG. And in white, stick it in cruise at 70 and a few other drivers will brake and sit behind you for a while, looking for the tell tale hi-viz jackets. Hardly a plus point, but it helps pass the time.

- Umbrellas in the door really do work!

- The built in driving license protector is a huge benefit.

- OK, we all know that manufacturers eco data is utter bilge, but the 190 is sooo far away from its official spec it's laughable. 50mpg is possible, but quoting 68?? What were VW marketing men smoking??

- Seats takes ages to find the sweet spot, as they've got an odd shaped back to them at shoulder height.

- Smart Light isn't that clever. Often leaves main beam on when it shouldn't (sorry ambulance, and about 120 drivers on the M4 tonight), and doesn't shoot back to main fast enough. The system on the loaner  Octavia I had was better, so maybe it's a bi-xenon implementation

- Lane assist. It's rather pointless unless you have a habit of texting / eating a 3 course lunch / putting make up on whilst driving along duallies or M-ways.

- 190 PS isn't enough really, the car really needs an oil burner with around 50-70 more horses and a couple more cylinders to make it a real long distance cruiser.

- Phone mirror feature in the Columbus is pretty useless, it only recognises 5 of my apps out of 300, one of which is maps, which is really useful when you already have satnav, worst of all it won't work wth Spotify. Come on Skoda, talk to Spotify. If Vodafone can manage it, anyone can.

- Diesel engines make the most unemotional noise that I can think of, so just as well the radio works well

- Easily mistaken for an Audi A8 when hunting for it in a multi storey car park (honestly, it really did look like it from behind)

- 19" alloys make for a pattery ride, and it's a tad underdamped on standard shockers.

Thus far, I like it given what I use it for. Whether I'll still remotely look forward to driving in 6 months time, let alone 2 years remains to be seen.....

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!... Happy motoring!

Btw, what's the "built in driving license protector"?

I wouldn't have thought being mistaken for an Audi A8 would be a negative! Hope you keep enjoying your new Superb!

My xenons are certainly no better (distance) than my MKII Superb ones were, and are nowhere near as good as the Yeti’s on main beam (possibly because they are lower?)

Maybe yours are set a bit higher than mine as in 2K miles I have only been flashed a couple of times and the lights had clearly dipped away from the oncoming car.

Fully agree on the MPG, this surely comes under mis selling??

I have left lane assist alone for the moment but I do wonder how long it will still be enabled.

A lack of speed capability or indeed incentive! Compared to the Leon, it is a bus.

You'd think not, but I wasted 10 minutes of precious commute home time looking for it!

My wife looked at this morning, and declared that it looks like a starship.....

Did someone say it's BIG!!!!

Rebelred the burning smell is related to the DPF and exhaust etc. It's the excess oils and sealants etc from where it was built, and will soon burn off. In another 1000k you shouldn't smell anything.

I was hoping it was something like that, thanks for putting my mind at ease Derv.

Yes mine stank first couple of days. Oddly after a gentle drive at the weekend the cooling fan came on, and stayed on for 2-3 minutes after turning the engine off. I'd been driving slowly prior too, so rather bizarre

That was an interrupted DPF regeneration cycle. The car turns on the cooling fan because of the extremely high exhaust temps, to prevent any fires starting where you're parked. The tech has definitely moved on but I'm so glad I moved back to petrol. The DPF is one thing I'm definitely not missing!

A DPF regen after 700 miles, most of which at m way speeds?

Plus, what is the problem with the DPF apart from the fact they need replacing long before a cat does..?

IIRC my first regen was in the order of the first 350 - 500 miles (on an older mk2). I recall reading that the newer systems are set to regenerate around every 350 miles or so regardless of DPF soot load (or lack of).

The fact they actively waste fuel, require special drives just to empty (repeatedly) if you do a lot of short journeys and/or don't use the motorway much, cost so much to repair and/or replace (and have a high bork factor anyway)...  Various reasons. A diesel engine with a DPF is pointless for me. We only do 12k a year now (down from 30k to 50k) and most of that is relatively short journeys.

Getting 40mpg round town and 50mpg on a run from a 2.0 petrol engine, which is blowing warm air within 30 seconds in winter, doesn't care how long I do - or don't - drive it and doesn't keep bugging me to do a special trip to 'empty the DPF before you need to visit the dealer and bend over' is a win in my book. Most of the 2.0 diesels are only giving that MPG anyway, and the petrols are imho much nicer to drive and suit the DSG box better.

As I said, just my own opinions, needs and experiences. YMMV. :)

You have a point. If I could have gotten 50mpg from my cupra 280 on a m way cruise then I'd still be in it. But not a hope. Of course you can't compare a nigh on 300bhp hatch with a diesel bus but that's my mileage! I have no problem with regens, 30k year plus not about to try and score a top Aviva driving app result any time soon.

Yeah 280hp of anything isn't going to break any economy records. Fantastic engine though! I'm looking forward to getting my 2.0 TSI Superb in March, but for now my Mazda 6 tourer (2.0 145ps) is giving me 40-50mpg with all those lovely revs to play with. If economy was a concern or I was still doing moon mileage I'd have just ordered the venerable 150hp 1.4 TSI ACT (rather than any of the diesels), but as I don't really care I couldn't resist the extra horses in the 200. Horses for courses and all that. :)

Yup, that's why I'm back using petrol.

However DPF technology has moved on and is no longer an afterthought but has been designed in from the start. Earlier DPF's were usually too far away from the exhaust manifolds so rarely managed to passively re-generate. Later versions are close coupled with the exhaust manifolds so can run hotter.

As for Adblue..........

Wife has an ibiza 1.4 act engine, can't get more than 40-41 out of it. I'd kill it in the superb....

Just driving style and journey type I suppose. I got 50+mpg out of the non ACT 1.4 TSI without even trying (and I don't hang around!). Anyway we're getting far off topic... sorry OP! If you fancy a gab about petrol/diesel/mpg/whatever feel free to start a thread and I'll join in when I'm next online. :) Cheers!
