Switching tyres round to equal out wear

Featured Replies

Is this still a thing ?? I used to have it done years ago on cheapy 13" fiesta tyres.

Got a staggered set up on my current car and as such the inners wear a little quicker than the outer edges.

I'm thinking a switch around to equal out wear rates, I have access to a tyre machine so it wouldn't cost me anything.

I have a feeling someone said it's a no go these days but I can't be 100% sure as to why it would be an issue.

Any thoughts ??

Side to side - Yeah fine, so long as the tyre hasn't got an inside and an outside specified, should help you get longer out of them.

I do front to back when I change from summer to winter and back.

Depends on the tyres, but you most you can at least rotate front and rear.

If their non-direction assymetric tyres, without specific 'outside' face then it should be no issue.

If the tyres says "outside" then you will bump into bigger issues.

I do the same as Steve.

They are marked outside, so what's the difference ?? I know they directional so have be fitted the right way round but I was thinking of completely removing tyres off each wheel and rotating so the outside marker remains on the outside if you get me.

Can't do back to front as staggered, Fronts are 225/45/18, rears are 245/40/18.

Yes it's a BMW !!!

Not a lot you can do then, the outside has to stay on the outside, if it's marked that way, so it'll still be wearing on them.

You could always buy a VRS and put them on that for a bit so the inners wear :)

Depends what tyres you're using, mine have a fat rain channel on one side and cross cut on the other.

Blonde moment here. Although it was a heavy one last night.

Yeah even if I remove and rotate they'll still be on the outside won't they .... DERP !!

Oh well that's that then.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious which I failed to consider lol

Do you know, or are you related to, this person? :P

I must be somewhere along the line !!!

Maybe I should hide this thread before too many people realise how low the bar is to be on Briskoda Staff? :D

Good call. We wouldn't want the secret let out would we.

If the tyres are marked "Outside" (and "inside" if only by implication) then they're asymmetric, not directional.

Directional tyres have "Rotation ->" marked on both side walls.

I rotate every 5,000 miles to keep the wear even.

It also means I get to replace all 4 at the same time, which i prefer, I means if I change brands the all match

+1 I much prefer having tyres that all have about the same tread depth. Just an OCD thing maybe.

+2. I have to have 4 of the exact same tyre, I can't stand having 2 different sets of tyres at he same time. I got a puncture sometime last year on the drivers side rear, and the fact I've now got 3 Hankook V12 Evo's and 1 odd Hankook Evo2 annoys me nearly as much as the puncture itself and having to pay out for a new tyre lol! I feel like I've got to get 3 of the same now when I replace them to even them out, but i might not want those tyres! Dilemma! Tyre OCD dilemma lol

The owner's manual says that the tires should be rotated every 10.000 km, front < - > back, same side (no crossing) to even wearing.

:P

I thought the tyres rotated themselves as you drove.

/bumps head on bar.

The only thing I hold onto is more tread on the rears and same pattern on the rears. Then same pattern on each axle. So I can migrate patterns if needs be, although far less of a concern on the citigo ;)
