Burning rubber smell from rear near-side wheel arch

Featured Replies

I've had a 14 plate Octavia for about a month now and noticed a burning rubber smell from the above area when I stopped the car the other day. The cooling fan was also running and I've read that this is related to the DPF, and someone suggested that the DPF could be the cause of the smell. Any thoughts?

On a related note the cooling fan comes on from time to time when I park up, even after short-ish journeys, and on cold days. Is this normal?

My 14 plate octavia does the same as yours and every now and again smells of burning nothing to worry about I think

Its the DPF and completely normal...will smell like that just after a regen cycle or if turned off and interrupted.

It is quite likely to be caused by normal DPF operation as you suggest.

The exhaust & DPF are hot when you stop the car so the fan runs to assist cooling.

As the fan runs at 100% its likely the rubber smell is being blown from the engine bay under the car.

The fan running when you stop the car is completely fine even when the engine isnt completely hot.

It can run for a minute or so & will stop on its own.

Unless you have a warning message on the dashboard there is no need to do anything, just carry on using the car as you normally would.

Ignore all the people that tell you to continue driving the car at 3000rpm for 20minutes.

The engine management system is capable of sorting this all out on its own without you needing to do anything.

You brought a car with an engine derived from a tractor, what did you expect?

I agree.

Also people who buy a diesel need to be aware the DPF is a serviceable item and is viewed as life of car item if the car is driven under ideal conditions.

have a read of this from the AA who know a thing or two about cars http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuels-and-environment/diesel-particulate-filters.html
