how many rpm?

Featured Replies

Just wondering what revs people get to when driving? Maybe I'm super conservative. I don't think i get much over 3k normally - except when, just after buying it, I had the dsg box in sport mode coming back from the co-op. But I hit about 5k getting into a gap on the M40 yesterday and it seemed wild.

1.4 tsi Octavia

Crimney.. i ring swmbo 1.0 citigo to about 5.5-6k when i borrow it and get out of town for a few miles.

the octy (1.9 tdi) i tend to run up to about 4k between changes, skip 3-5th when at normal cruising speed (60mph)

Depends on what mood I'm in.  I didn't buy a V6 to pootle and change revs at 3k so I regularly head for the dizzy heights of 6k on a regular basis.

When in the Ignis, the peak power doesn't come in 'till the last few hundred rpm so that also gets a good thrashing when I'm allowed back in it - the Mrs has it most of the time. :notme:

All the revs, every slip road :)

And every opportunity :)

This!!

I use what's necessary at the time, but much past 4k isn't worth it in my derv.

Used to have 1 bike where the redline was at 14000 revs, the needle pointed at it lots

Depends what im in...

Not much above 3k rpm in the fab for normal driving, but i do keep it between 3 and 5k when i want to get past something. Anything above 5k and the power tails off. so i never redline it.

Bike redlines about 12,000. I'll occasionally redline that for fun. It pulls harder and harder, loves to be revved. Pootling about never above 5k, and normal spirited around 8 or 9k or wherever really.

I never usually go past 4K in the Monte, and I didn't take it past 4500 at Snetterton either. Not worth it.

Not worth it.. How dya mean?

Edit: oh, is it diesel?

I guess with having the DSG in the VRS I let that do whatever it wants to do which usually changes between 2 and 3k but joining motorways off slip roads I like to knock it down to S once in a while and unleash the beast.

No, 1.2 TSI. By not worth it I don't mean "risks" I mean I see no real benefit in doing so.

Fair shout. Its very engine dependant isnt it (:

Every now and then I'll take the fabia to the redline but obviously the power tails off before that so not much point.

The pulsar I never took above 6k even its still pulls, don't want to throw a rocker or anything.

My old golf 16v loved to be revved hard all the way to redline that used to get plenty of abuse.

There's more than one use for the rev limiter and it's there to be used. I don't bother in the superb as the last 500rpm is pointless, but the 280 spun to the redline like bez on a night out.

Take mine to maybe 3700 in second and third when really putting my foot down. The rest of the time I change at around 2200. I've never been to the redline, never experienced the limiter, I wouldn't want to either, on an eight year old, 105k mileage car!

I regularly take both our cars out to the limiter; best way to keep them exercised and its good for an engine. The limiter is set in a safe place for the engine and you aren't going to blow an engine going near it. In the Octavia was no point taking it to the red line due to the power tailing off but take it to 4000rpm and it still was quite happy.

I regularly use up to 5000rpm on my way to work off the roundabouts. I bought my car to enjoy and use and short shifting all the time isn't my idea of fun. My 1.8TSi loves chasing the redline and really zips towards it!

It is there to be used yeah.

Hence why DSG cars go all the way up to the redline when in Sport.

Cant be bad if the computers programmed to do it can it ;):D.

Exactly. The only reason not to use the full range is economy, or in the case of a diesel the torque and power drop off

Why? It gets taken there as part of the MoT, and it's better to do it under load and blow the soot out than let the tester do it on light throttle.

Because she's my baby...

I hadn't thought of that. I won't be getting a habit of it that's for sure. Bikes are for redlining :x

Cant argue with that. Mines thrives for it... then when you've changed gear.. it just wants to do it again! :D

2.0 Tsi stage 1 map @ 265bhp. Loves bouncing off the red line.

I'm not saying "make a habit of it", just "do it deliberately 2 or 3 times in the month before the MoT".

Advice noted :)

Always used the full range of revs, keep everything running well, even more so in a diesel that quickly gets clogged up with light use. When I use the Mrs car once in a blue moon I give it a good thrashing to clear it out. :D
